Diwali and our New Year are soon approaching. We wish you all a very happy Diwali and a prosperous New Year. We completed the celebration of the Paryushana Parva during September 8-15, ending with Parna for Sakal Sangh on September 16 th . We had one Maas Khaman (30 fasts), one 14 Ayambil followed by 16 fasts and over 36 adults & youth who completed Atthai (8 fasts) or higher tapasya with good 'Shata'. On behalf of the Board of Trustees and the Executive Committee, we want to offer our Michchhami Dukkadam to all of you. We seek forgiveness from all of you for any transgressions through Man (Thoughts), Vachan (Words) and Kaya (Actions). During paryushan, we achieved a great milestone - approval from our general membership to install partitions in the Social hall for the Study classes. Constitution committee did a great job encouraging members to participate and caste vote. On October 6 th , society arranged a Jatra to Lansing Temple. A bus full of people (50+) joined us for this Jatra. Our members participated in Dwaja Ceremony and Snatra Puja while they were there. We really appreciate Manojbhai & Minaxiben from Lansing for organizing a very nice lunch for all our members. We also want to thank Vinaybhai Shah for taking lead in organizing this Jatra. Excited by the response, we may be having another Jatra in 2008 – stay tuned. Ayambil Oli was from October 18-26, followed by parna on 27 th . About 35 people did the entire oli. We hope all the Ayambil tapasvis are in good shata. Our next major program is the Diwali Day celebration on November 10 th . Program details are included in this newsletter. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend. Our new membership directory will be published and distributed at the Diwali program. All the members were contacted individually to ensure that the information is accurate and current. Thanks to all of the volunteers who called our members and your support in providing the latest information. Before Paryushan, our volunteers called the members for a friendly reminder to pay off past dues pledges and donations. Thank you all for responding positively to the volunteers. It was a great response, and we have received substantial past due amount. Publication # 6 October 2007

October 2007 Jain Study Class CornerJai Jinendra Quote for the month: “Religion is supremely auspicious; non-violence, self-control, and penance are its essentials. Even the Indras (Devs) bow down before him whose mind is always preoccupied with religion.”

All the Students Graduated – As of Sept 2007, all the students graduated to the next higher class and started with new curriculum. This is 2-year curriculum based on input from teachers, parents, and available literature from JAINA. In September 112 students attended the study class. Folding Partition Approval – To reduce noise level while the classes are being conducted, a proposal for folding partition was submitted to general membership. This proposal was approved and will create 3 closed rooms when the classes are in session. Thanks to the members for their support. Paryushana Highlights Youth Tapascharya – During Paryushana 16 students completed various tapascharyas such as Ekasana, Besana, Upavas, etc. This made them eligible to score 16 or more points. The highest score was of 48 points (Atthai by Veer Jhaveri). CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE STUDENT - TAPASVIS. Youth Presentations 3 students made a presentation during Paryushana days as follows:

• Monika Kothari – Relationship of 2 great souls – Mahavir Swami & Gautam Swami • Vishal Mehta – Explanation of Mohaniya Karma • Nirali Lathia – My favorite Pilgrim Place - Palitana

Bhakti – This year the first attempt was made to devote one evening of Bhakti program by youngsters and it was very successful. 18 young students participated in singing Bhakti songs and stavans with support of musical instruments. Book Store – During Paryushana, we sold religious books at the base price (excluding shipping). The goal to sell the books was let the members know about available literature for own use as well as for use by youngsters. We appreciate the help of Rajnibhai Shah, Dipakbhai Shah, and Pannaben Shah to keep the store open. Penny Drive – We had a successful “Penny Collection Drive” and collected 464 dollars. Bhartiben J. Shah will give this to the local charities. Thanks to the volunteers for managing the table and the members for their contribution. Explanation of Pratikraman in English – We had one evening session to educate youth members and young adults about Paryushan Parva and Importance of Pratikraman. Presentation included importance of specific Sutras and its history etc. The session was attended by 20 members. Search for Teachers – Study Class is in need of few enthusiastic and committed teachers. If you think, you are one of them; please contact Mahendra J. Shah or Vinay C. Shah. We will assist you, coach you and put you in proper group as long as you are motivated and enjoy creative teachings. Class sponsors for month of September were – Anuj & Rupal Shah, Ramesh & Sucheta Gandhi, Pravin & Surabhi Shah, Manish & Varsha Mehta, Dimple & Dipa Shah, Kamal & Sunitha Jain, Jayant & Heena Shah (7 Life time sponsors). Great Men's Views on Jainism "In conclusion let me assert my conviction that Jainism is an original system, quite distinct and independent from all others; and that therefore it is of great importance for the study of philosophical thoughts and religious life in ancient India."- Dr. Herman Jacobi "Jainism is of a very high order. Its important teachings are based upon science. The more the scientific knowledge advances the more that Jain teachings will be proven." - L. P. Tessetori, Italy "I adore so greatly the principles of the Jain religion that I would like to be reborn in a Jain community."

- George Bernard Shaw We learn from scriptures (Sashtras) and commentaries that Jainism exists from beginning less time. This fact is indisputable and free from difference of opinion. There is much historical evidence on this point."- Lokamanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak "There is nothing wonderful in my saying that Jainism was in existence long before the Vedas were composed." - Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, Vice-President, India "Truly speaking, Jainism is an independent and original religion, for it is neither Hinduism nor Vedic religion, but of course it is an aspect of Indian life, culture, and philosophy."

- Shri Jawaharlal Nehru, Prime Minister, India
