PLAY TO WINFrom Theodore: I am totally confused
by certain things I have read about casino gambling. I am a novice and I have not played so far and therefore maybe I am misreading what I have read. Take craps for instance. The Pass Line bet is supposed to be a good bet and the house edge is something like 1.4 percent. How can that be?
So I make the bet, but if I lose it, do I lose 1.4 percent? No, I lose the whole bet. If I win, I win the whole bet.
Now, how can that be? I am right that you either win or lose a
bet correct? I have not yet put my money where my doubts are so maybe you can help me in this? How do you lose 1.4 percent, Mr. Scoblete? It doesn’t seem to make sense.
Frank Responds: You are taking the idea of winning and losing a bet as a one shot deal. If you make one Pass Line bet in your whole life, then yes, you win or lose that bet and that is that. The number of decisions, which is one, cannot become 1.4 percent. It is either a 100 percent or no percent wager.
But if you make thousands of those bets then the percentages will start to look like the math. You must remember that the Pass Line bet will win 251 decisions for the casino and win only 244 decisions for the player. Those are averages and it takes a long time to see such averages work out in the real world.
As the number of decisions begins to build you will begin to see that you don’t just win a bet and lose a bet, you experience the house edge percentages — or, at least, close to them. The percentages given as averages assume a long-run of playing time.
Is it possible that someone could be ahead of the house with 1,000 decisions on the Pass Line? Yes. But given 10,000 decisions, a winning Pass Line bettor would be a rare bird.
One more example: The average approximate height of an American male is 5’10” but most American males are not 5’10”. The range of heights is huge but when you average them all in the result is an average of 5’10”. There is a good chance you are not 5’10”. I’m not.
From Marie: I enjoy the slot machines and I do not care that you and other writers claim these are programmed to take our money. All casino games, slot machines included, are created to take our money. That’s the whole point of the casino, making money.
But I have started to read articles on the slot machines and I realize that each machine or type of machine is programmed differently. Some machines give out more money over time and other machines give out less money over time.
I want to play the machines that give out the most money I need a quick primer about which machines are which. Can you help me in this?
Frank Responds: I don’t think conscientious gambling writers lie and say there is a way to get an edge on slot machines. I did write in my book Slot Conquest: How to Beat the Slot Machines about certain banking machines that at times go into positive range but these machines have mostly disappeared. That’s sad for the player.
And, yes, you are right; the casino is in the business of making money for itself. It is a business after all. I doubt most players think otherwise.
I will give you “rules of thumb” in terms of looking for the best machines. I would avoid all of the following machines:
•Mega-progressive-jackpot machines,
such as Megabucks, that are interlinked among casinos
•Any machine that has more than one
machine linked with it•Any progressive machine•Penny, nickel and dime machines that
allow you to bet many times more than the denomination
I would look to play the following machines:
•Stand-alone machines that do not reward a player for betting more than one credit. This means the jackpot is merely a multiple of the first bet, such as $200 for one credit, $400 for two credits and $600 for three credits and so on. (Merely bet one credit on such machines!)
•Stand-alone machines of any typeThe higher the denomination of
machine, the looser the machine will be but your losses will be more because a smaller percentage of a larger bet will still lose you more money than you would lose on a smaller denomination machine.
As I stated, these are generalizations but they should help you.
Many slot players enjoy playing machines with extremely high
house edges in the hope that they can win a life-changing
jackpot. The odds of such a thing happening are remote indeed. If you are not a dreamer my advice is good. It will save you money over time.

Happy New Year! I hope everyone ended 2017 well, and as we enter 2018, I wish everyone good luck, and not just at the casinos. We have some exciting news to share — Jackpot! magazine is going monthly. Beginning with this January issue, Jackpot! will be a once-a-month publication (instead of every other week). This new format will allow us to do more in-depth stories and expanded feature articles.
Plus, this issue marks the return of the much-loved Jackpot! Puzzle Contest. The contest, a word search puzzle, can be found on page 38. In January, we are giving away five copies of the 2018 American Casino Guide courtesy of its author, Steve Bourie. This amazing book lists every casino in the country, including, of course, those in Mississippi. Best of all, the book has coupons to be used in a number of casinos.
For a chance to win one of these books, complete the word search puzzle and mail it in before the end of the month. Or, email the contest to us for your chance to win. Winners will be listed in the February issue of Jackpot! And, even if you choose not to enter the contest, we hope you will enjoy doing the word search puzzle and finding popular casino-related words.
2018 promises to be a year of changes and growth in the Mississippi gaming industry. Most notably, ISLAND VIEW CASINO RESORT will open its second casino this summer. Located on the south side of the highway from the original Island View casino and connected to the Beach Hotel, this new casino will be smoke-free and will include a new hotel check-in lobby and waiting area, a show bar centrally located on the casino floor area, a diner-concept eatery and a coffee shop.
Casinos will also have new slot machines and table games, redesigned and upgraded hotel rooms and expanded and revamped restaurants. Coming soon to HARD ROCK BILOXI is the new Robo Bar, mixology perfected by technology. Guests can order their drinks with a click of the button, and the Robo bartender can make 120 cocktails in a hour — using exact measurements and ensuring a perfectly crafted sip every time. The Robo Bar lounge has high-tech tablets allowing guests to create their own cocktail. Watch for more details on this one-of-a-kind bar.
If you are looking for something to do on Jan. 6, BEAU RIVAGE is hosting Hope From John Ellis, a benefit for the One Wing Foundation, a nonprofit that raises and distributes funds to organizations for medical, physical and grief recovery of parents who have experienced pregnancy or infant loss. The evening will include a Southern-comfort-style buffet, silent auction and live music from Castle Crown. Tickets are $45. Visit onewingfoundation.org/hopefromjohnellis.

Located at the front of the casino, the 24/7 eatery now features a wide variety of dishes from traditional fare to innovative entrées. The multi-page menu includes appetizers, soups and salads, burgers (including an Asian specialty), classic dishes, sandwiches, po-boys, Mexican fare, steaks…are you starting to get the picture?
With so much to choose from, it was not easy to know where to begin. But, we started at the beginning with the new home-smoked redfish dip. Now, we’ve heard of tuna dip before, but
smoked redfish? It was delicious. Served with a number of crispy toast pieces, this dip features local home-smoked redfish blended into a Cajun-seasoned soft cheese. The portion size was generous and the flavor of the fish wasn’t too heavy or over seasoned. This was perfect as a spread, but would also be great on a salad or even in a sandwich.

Another new appetizer is called, When Pigs Fly, a take on buffalo-style wings but made with fried pork drumettes. The three tender, braised pork “wings” are tossed in a Northern Alabama white barbecue sauce and served with cole slaw for a true Southern dish. Don’t be taken aback by the white barbecue sauce. Made in-house by Chef David Steiner, it is wonderful.
Chef Steiner also works his magic on the new three-cheese pizza — some of the best pizza we’ve ever enjoyed. He makes the thick crust in-house, as well as the marinara sauce, which was perfectly seasoned
and flavorful. The crust is firm and crunchy and holds up well even when loaded with toppings. We had a vegetable pizza, topped with peppers, onion, mushrooms, jalapeno, spinach and tomato along with mozzarella, provolone and Parmesan cheese.
With each bite we got a mouthful of veggies and cheese that was stringy and rich. The rectangle-shaped pizza was cut in six triangle slices and could easily be shared or enjoyed as a meal on its own. Toppings also include chicken, pepperoni, ham, pulled pork and Applewood smoked bacon.
The chef’s choice fish tacos were another tasty find on the menu. Speckled

trout was the fish on the night we were there, and the light, flaky fish, a local’s favorite, was perfect in the flour tortillas. The tacos, which can also come with chicken, pork, steak or shrimp, are topped with cheese, lettuce, pico de gallo and Steiner’s chili aioli, which added just the right amount of zip to the fish.
Also new to Under the Oak Cafe are the popular Southern fried pork chops topped with sweet onion gravy. We saw plates of these chops with mashed potatoes and vegetables delivered to tables throughout the restaurant, receiving audible acclaim from diners. There is also the banh mi burger — a half-pound beef patty topped with sriracha aioli, jalapenos, daikon radish, carrots and sprouts. A wonderful way to incorporate Asian flavors into an American classic.

Michael Patrick’s Sports Café and Grille at Golden Nugget Biloxi is an eclectic sports-themed café and 24-hour grille, coupled with a high-energy sports bar that features all the college and pro games, as well as video poker excitement — all under one roof. The cafe features a wide selection of dishes, including the (above) hangover burger (bacon, pepper Jack cheese, onion strings, fried egg, lettuce, tomatoes, onions and pickles), a number of omelettes and breakfast offerings, and desserts (right) such as the brownie classic (vanilla ice cream on top of a brownie covered in whipped cream, nuts, caramel and chocolate sauce).

can also be enjoyed, along with the new Nathan’s foot-long hot dog, chicken and waffles (with sweet potato fries and maple syrup), shrimp and grits, catfish and chips, fried shrimp po-boys, country fried steak, grilled rib-eye steak and chicken pot pie. The list goes on and on at Under the Oak, where no one will ever go hungry.
Breakfast offerings, also served ’round the clock, include omelettes, country fried steak and eggs, the Scarlet skillet with a variety of toppings and the smoked salmon plate with toasted bagel, cream cheese, red onion, sliced egg, capers and tomatoes.
And no matter the meal or time of day, don’t forget dessert. Banana splits and sundaes, Southern bread pudding with praline sauce, the Mississippi mud layer cake with fudge, caramel sauce and marshmallows and the peanut butter pie are just some of the sweet choices. We went for a new option — beignets. Served warm,
these fluffy New Orleans-style fried fritters were covered in powdered sugar and served with a helping
of Godiva chocolate sauce. It is worth the mess (and finger licking) to enjoy these pillowy pieces of goodness.
Under the Oak Cafe is more than your average casino coffee shop. With Chef Steiner leading the way, the choices are seemingly endless and the flavors are definitely abundant. The restaurant also features a complete bar, several large screen TVs allowing guests to catch all the games and servers who are knowledgeable and friendly.
It’s no wonder the restaurant’s motto is “Where Food Meets Comfort.”

BILOXI — Riverdance—The 20th Anniversary World Tour, back by popular demand, will play a limited Mississippi Gulf Coast engagement at the Beau Rivage Theatre. The international Irish dance phenomenon can be seen Friday through Sunday, Jan. 12-14, with shows at 7 p.m. on Jan. 12; 3 and 7 p.m. on Jan. 13; and 3 p.m. on Jan. 14.
Celebrating an extraordinary milestone, Riverdance—The 20th Anniversary World Tour is composed by Bill Whelan, produced by Moya Doherty and directed by John McColgan. The production boasts new costumes, new lighting, new projections and the addition of a brand new number, “Anna Livia,” featuring the female members of
the Irish dance troupe in an a cappella hard-shoe number.
“The success of Riverdance across the whole world has gone beyond our wildest dreams,” said Doherty. “The fact that the show continues to draw and excite audiences is a tribute to every dancer, singer, musician, staff and crew member who have dedicated themselves to the show. This 20th anniversary tour is a thank you to our audiences and a celebration of what has been an incredible journey across two decades.”

blend of dance, music and song. Drawing on Irish traditions, the combined talents of the performers propel Irish dancing and music into the present day, capturing the imagination of audiences across all ages and cultures.
For more than 20 years, nothing has carried the energy, the sensuality and the spectacle of Riverdance. With its fusion of Irish and international music and dance, the show broke all box office records during its world première run in Dublin in early 1995. When the show transferred to London the reaction was unprecedented. There followed a hugely successful tour starting in New York in March 1996, where eight sold-out shows at Radio City Music Hall heralded the start of 16 years of non-stop touring by Riverdance companies throughout North America.
Since its inception Riverdance has packed theaters throughout North America, Oceania, Asia, Europe, South Africa and South America.
Tickets start at $19.95, plus tax and service fees and are available by calling (888) 566-7469 or visiting beaurivage.com.
BILOXI — Seether, the multiplatinum rock radio anthem-making machine whose albums, songs and live performances are armed with big riffs, bigger melodies, crunchy tones and atmosphere, comes to Hard Rock Biloxi. The band performs Saturday, Jan. 27, at 8 p.m.
Seether’s existence is an act of rebel-lion, weaponized to cut through the noise with truth tell-ing clarity and unde-niable authenticity. The band’s seventh studio album, Poison the Parish, helps them bring back musicali-ty and loud playing, and provides them the platform where of having something to say that they can stand behind, said front man/co-founder Shaun Morgan.
Along with Morgan, Seether includes Dale Stewart, bass/vocals, and John Humphrey on drums.
Make no mistake, the band says. Poison the Parish displays no specific agenda, political or religious. But it is personal. This time out,
Seether restored their sound with the blood, sweat and heaviness that’s long powered their career. In this day and age, keeping it real and doing it for the right reasons is a bold statement in and of itself. At a point where most bands start to waver, Seether has made certain album seven is the band’s heaviest yet.
The South African band has amassed 20 Top 5 singles, three platinum records, a fan-beloved gold-selling DVD and scores of No. 1 singles including “Fine Again,” “Fake It,” “Remedy,” “Broken,” “Words
As Weapons,” “Country Song,” “Gasoline,” “Driven Under” and their infamous cover of “Careless Whisper.” The band has also been recognized by the South African Music Awards, MTV Africa Music Awards and Revolver Golden Gods Awards.
Tickets to see Seether start at $31 and can be purchased at ticketmaster.com or hardrockbiloxi.com. Riverdance

GULFPORT — Country artist Chris Janson feels he was born to entertain, and that is exactly what he will do when he performs at Island View Casino Resort on Saturday, Jan. 20. He takes the stage in the View Showroom at 8 p.m.

BILOXI — Mississippi native and five-time Grammy winner, Mary Stuart comes to Golden Nugget Biloxi. Stuart & His Fabulous Superlatives can be seen Friday, Jan. 26, at 8 p.m.
Since starting out singing gospel as a child, Stuart has spent more than five decades celebrating American roots music with a missionary’s zeal. His teenage years on tour with bluegrass legend Lester Flatt in the 1970s were followed by six years in Johnny Cash’s band during the ’80s and a chart-topping tenure as a solo artist in the ’90s.
Inducted into the Mississippi Musician’s Hall of Fame in 2001, Stuart has had hits with “Hillbilly Rock,” “Little Things,” “Same Old Train” and “Now That’s Country.”
The turn of the century saw Stuart looking inward to make deeply felt records paying homage to his love of vintage gospel, his Native American passions, and, as always, his core — foot-stomping,
tail-shaking, honky-tonking, rocking hillbilly music. His latest musical oeuvre is ably supported by some of the coolest cats in Nashville — his backing band, The Fabulous Superlatives: guitarist Kenny Vaughan, drummer Harry Stinson and
bassist Paul Martin. They released Way Out
West, his 18th studio album, in 2017. The album was conceived as a love letter by Stuart to the lonely but magical American West, specifically the promised land of California. Way Out West, with its atmospheric production and primal rock and roll energy,
evokes classics like Marty Robbins’ Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs and Cash’s The Fabulous Johnny Cash, one of the first albums Stuart ever owned.
Tickets start at $15 and are available at ticketmaster.com and by calling Ticketmaster at (800) 745-3000. Guests may also purchase tickets, if available, in person at the Golden Nugget box office on the day of the show from 2 to 8 p.m.

JACKPOT!HOROSCOPE
By Paul Wade
Editor’s Note: Horoscopes are meant for entertainment purposes only and are for the current time period.
Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) — Saturn entering your sign is like your chickens coming home to roost. You witness
and experience the consequences of what you have done over the past 30 years. What you see and feel mirror an attitude you’ve exhibited that has meant tough love for many you’ve encountered along the way.
Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) — Despite your reputation as the most progressive, revolutionary and liberal member of
the zodiac, those of your acquaintance will recognise you’re sticking close to what you know. Your tolerance of other’s eccentricities leaves others thinking you’re a pushover.
Pisces (Feb. 19-March 19) — From one angle at least you may be happier than ever in an ideal association with
your perfect partner. But on the other, you’re vulnerable and anxious, almost as if no real-life scenario can ever match your expectations.
Aries (March 20-April 19) — You are increasingly concerned with what you have achieved and your standing in
the community. To meet your own criteria is an important requirement, but to ensure a contribution that everyone will respect unconditionally means a compromise is in the stars.
Taurus (April 20-May 20) — This period involves a focus on material realities, property matters and joint financial
interests. It may involve your spouse, a business partner, the bank, or any number of fiscal and government authorities.
Gemini (May 21-June 20) — Keep one eye cocked towards the brighter scenario you hope will prevail in future.
You have faced problems in almost every instance where you’ve needed to interact with others. Decide whether it is worth the effort.
Cancer (June 21-July 22) — The bulk of our solar system denotes a journey from what has often been a solitary
struggle toward a scenario where others seem more than ready to assist you. Differentiate between a passing phase versus something that heralds a better set of circumstances.
Leo (July 23-Aug. 22) — The period for taking stock is concluding and you’re resolving to make creative changes
over the months ahead. Life inevitably, grows serious soon enough, so it won’t always be so straightforward stepping back from your routines.
Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) — You continue to contemplate indescribable emotional issues that are in marked contrast to the
practicality for which you’re known. Home is in the forefront. There’s a real need for you to move on from finalities of the past few years.
Libra (Sep. 23-Oct. 22) — Money matters are in the spotlight and luck is one your side. A battery fully charged
cannot hold any more power, so your current reserves need to diminish before more resources flow your way.
Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) — When opportunities first come your way to broaden the scope of your experience,
expand your mind, discover more about the world and your place in it. It doesn’t take long for a new sense of certainty and optimism to overtake you.
Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) — Saturn has bid farewell to your constellation after three years and has left you in
a vastly different financial position. You are considerably wiser. and financially, you are likely better off than when it arrived.

Jackpot! readers ask us occassionally what the appropriate tip to leave might be for quality service for different casino employees. Obviously, many things factor into this, so please note that the information below is just a guideline, and impeccable service would receive a higher tip.
