ISZL High School Profile 2013/2014 About the International School of Zug and Luzern The International School of Zug and Luzern (ISZL) is an inde- pendent co-educational, non-profit private day school that pro- vides a high quality international education for students in Early Years to Grade 12 on three different campuses in the Cantons of Zug and Luzern in central Switzerland. The city of Zug is located thirty minutes from Switzerland’s largest city Zurich. A recognised economic centre, Zug and its environs are headquarters to many international companies. ISZL promotes a climate of respect, where teachers encourage students to develop self-confidence, positive relationships, and an enthusiastic approach to learning. ISZL High School The High School (Grades 9–12) was founded as the Riverside School in 1990 as a university preparatory school, and moved to its current location in Hünenberg, Switzerland in August 2010. Facilities include six science laboratories, three computer laboratories, three music rooms, a drama room, a large art studio, a library, a sports field complex and a triple gymnasium, which includes a fitness suite and dance studio. ISZL is authorised by the International Baccalaureate (IB) to offer the Middle Years and Diploma Programmes, and has been offering the College Board’s Advanced Placement (AP) classes since its inception. ISZL is a member of the Swiss Group of International Schools (SGIS) and the European Council of International Schools (ECIS). Students and Staff ISZL students come from a variety of backgrounds and approxi- mately one third have dual citizenship. Students represent 45 nationalities of which just over 40% declare their first language to be English. The teaching staff is comprised of 60 full and part time members who teach 345 students. ISZL has a rolling admissions policy. Academic Programme ISZL provides a college-preparatory programme in the English language. Emphasis is on a well rounded education through the successful completion of the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the opportunity for specialised study in the final two years. ISZL offers 21 AP courses and 23 IB Diploma courses. IB Middle Years Programme Students completing the IB Middle Years Programme in Grades 9 and 10 are required to take at least one course from each of the following: Arts (Drama, Music, Visual Arts) Humanities Language A (English) Language B (German, French, Spanish) Mathematics Physical Education Science Technology Students must take an additional language elective, or, for suitably qualified students in Grade 10, an AP Art History or AP Human Geography course. Advanced Placement and IB Diploma Courses Having successfully completed preceding courses, Grade 11 and 12 students may follow an AP course of study or enter the two-year IB Diploma Programme (DP). Students may take additional courses from the MYP offerings and often take additional language study or arts options. Advanced level non-AP or IB DP courses are offered in many subjects. High School Diploma Requirements In general, a student meets the minimum requirements for promotion to Grade 11 when, by the end of Grade 10, he or she has completed all the requirements of the MYP in all subjects and has completed an MYP Personal Project. Students in Grades 11 and 12 must follow a course of advanced study over two years, during which they are required to suitably complete a minimum of 10 courses (at least 5 per year). At least one course is required each in humanities, English, mathematics and science. Students must complete Grade 11 to graduate. The Campus Head may make minor concessions to these policies for students transferring to ISZL in their final two years. Sports, Activities and Community Service A wide variety of extra-curricular sports and activities are offered each season. involvement, the school requires all students to participate in at least one sport or activity each year. In addition, all students are required to complete at least 15 hours of community and service each year in order to graduate.

Personal Development WeekStudents take part in a yearly Personal Development Week (PDW) which allows further learning opportunities outside the academic curriculum with a focus in Grades 11 and 12 on community service. Recent offerings include school building in Kenya, marine conservation in Greece, and work with an orphanage in Romania.

Individual Educational Plan DiplomaAn Individual Educational Plan Diploma is granted to students par ticipating in the learning support programme after their suc­cess ful completion of agreed-upon requirements.
