Dear Parents,

Given the relentless wind and rain we have spent much of the week hunkered down or scurrying between buildings, but conditions did subside for long enough last Sunday for our Senior Rugby Sevens team to win the tournament at Milton Abbey. Once again our First Seven played excellent rugby and beat allcomers from bigger schools and from rugby clubs. They are now looking forward to the season finale at the forthcoming National Sevens at Rosslyn Park.

For much of the school the focus is on our Senior School production - ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ - with a cast of ‘thousands’. Please find time to come and see this even if you do not have a family member in the production.

Dubai Netball TourAfter months of meticulous planning and preparation from the indefatigable Mrs Burges, members of our senior netball squad

took off for the sunnier climes of the United Arab Emirates, Dubai.

Prep School NewsDear Parents,

Fresh from last week’s Year 6 Poetry Recital competition, Albert, Lottie and Jack all performed their chosen poems in assembly on Monday morning. Again, they did a superb job and quite rightly, received a very warm round of applause for their efforts. Mrs Jones and her talented Drama Club took assembly on Tuesday, performing their balloon mime stories, with great success.

On the various sports pitches, the under 9 inter-House mixed hockey took place at the very end of last week, with Ruddle taking the spoils, just ahead of Way and Thorne. Our High 5 netballers had a good win against Holsworthy on Monday afternoon, and despite some challenging conditions, our under 11 netball and football teams played some excellent matches against St. Joseph’s on Wednesday. Sadly though, the weather claimed our football match against Shebbear Primary and our House Cross-Country today. The first of the indoor rowing competitions took place on Tuesday lunchtime, with Alfie rowing just short of 500m in two minutes, with Keith and Evie close behind. It might be wise not to have too many of the nachos for lunch next time!

Congratulations to our golden sticker winners: Finley, Tyler. Lizzie, Angus, Tom, Alfie and Lottie. Arron won the BAFTA, and this week’s

the likes of Brighton College (also on tour), Hurricanes netball club and Sharjah. After six matches in the gruelling temperatures the team’s best result came in a 3-3 draw against Sharjah, in which Holly and Laura linked up superbly to set up numerous chances for Hazel. On another day with a few more days to acclimatise I have no doubt the team were capable of victory but often sport is more about the enjoyment of competition than the wining itself and the squad learned huge amounts from the experience.

The team’s progress was once again evident in their third and final game against Abu Dhabi netball club, played at the Zayed national cricket stadium. After a brief stadium tour and a chance to walk the same turf as some of the world’s cricketing greats from Pakistan and Australia the game started…in the rain! Our determination in defence along with some superb, communication and coherent movement in the attacking third made for a close game and Shebbear trailed by just a few goals at half-time. At this stage fatigue set in and the opposition pulled away, but the girls once again demonstrated their spirit and resilience in what are often the under-played challenging conditions of playing on tour. For the last quarter the girls simply agreed to ensure they walked off the court with their heads held high, as a proud unit of Shebbearian representatives and they did this by scoring more goals in this quarter than in any of the previous ones.

Of course our tour was not all about netball and throughout our short stay the group enjoyed many of the cultural experiences available to those who visit Dubai. Highlights included the desert safari involving a 4x4 trip across sand dunes and a Bedouin style dinner and entertainment. The girls also experienced trips to both the Burj Al Arab and Burj Khalifa and of course indulged in plenty of shopping at the world famous Dubai Shopping Mall. Some of the fundraising performed before departure also allowed for extra visits by taxi to the beach and a final trip into the town centre using the Dubai metro service. Also not to be forgotten was a day at the ‘Wild Wadi’ waterpark in which most experienced the ‘Jumeirah Scarer’ water slide, a thrilling but hair raising experience of dropping into an unseen vertical drop of some 30ft before meandering to the lower level. I hope the pictures provide a flavour of the tour as a whole as once again Shebbear sport travelled the globe and continued to establish themselves as one of the premier organisations for school

Following seven and an half hours in a luxurious Emirates aeroplane with countless entertainment options, we landed at 05:30hrs local time at Dubai International Airport. With our first fixture only a few hours later versus Dubai College the girls coped superbly well with little rest and a swift journey from the airport, to hotel, to the match; needless to say the warm-up became as crucial as ever. Led into battle by captain Antonia, the team set about establishing themselves with quick passing, off the ball movement and a combative approach. Despite this, the game saw our first defeat, although on learning that Dubai College are regular in the top three netball schools in the whole of the Emirates, with no less than four national squad players in their team, the girls performed remarkably well to lose by only 30 points.

And so after a well-earned rest the next day we travelled to the Seven’s Stadium, a superb sports facility just outside the city, to pit ourselves against various schools and clubs in a weekend tournament (equivalent to a Friday). Still somewhat fatigued the girls took a couple of games to get going but once they did, produced some netball that exceeded expectations. From defence, through mid-court to attack the whole squad raised their game to challenge

Life Beyond 18Last Friday, March 8th, was the careers morning entitled ‘Life Beyond 18’ which has become an annual event and is a highlight of the careers year. The purpose was for pupils to be able to find out more about various different careers and areas of work in an informal atmosphere. I wanted them to find out more about areas they were already interested in, to learn about careers that maybe they hadn’t considered previously and discover the various paths that are possible to follow. I also wanted to open up their minds to the vast range of possibilities beyond the boundaries of Devon.

We were joined by 23 different participants from a wide and impressive range of professions who gave a short presentation about their field of expertise, followed by a question and answer session with the pupils. The pupils were able to visit 6 different speakers of their choice through the morning. As always the hall was buzzing with activity and purpose throughout.

The whole morning went very well with really positive feedback from both students and participants. Clearly we could not have run this

event without the voluntary participation of all our speakers and I cannot thank them enough for giving up their time. They inspired, delighted and informed the pupils and had all gone to so much trouble to prepare especially for the event. What was particularly special was to have such a mixed group of people who were all connected with the school in different ways.

We had Old Shebbearians, spouses of staff, parents of pupils, friends of friends and representatives from organisations like the Armed Forces. It was such a positive experience for all involved and I look forward to organising it again next year. If you would like to be involved, please email me at the following address and I will let you know more about it: [email protected]

Creative Media Students filming music video for Thomas Cameron. On Saturday four of our BTEC Creative Media students, Tom, Jack, Lauren and Cat, were on location at Poltimore House in Exeter to film the music video for the next single release by Thomas Cameron. This opportunity ties in perfectly with their current unit studying pre-production and film production.Their enthusiasm, ideas and direction were excellent and they captured some great footage. They stepped up and took charge of the shoot as a team.

‘Music of the Night’ will be Cameron’s next single and will officially launch his first album. The finished film will be submitted to the

Classical Brit Awards 2019 as his nomination and is likely to be shown on national TV as his management are in talks with Channel 5 and BBC. His first video for ‘Bring Him Home’ has now topped 100k views and this one is sure to do even better.

A long, tiring day but well worth it. We look forward to showing you the finished film when editing is complete.

Csongor meets some newborn lambsForm 3 boarder Csongor from Hungary had an unusual experience at the weekend when he visited his friend Will’s farm and got involved with feeding the newborn lambs, something that he had never done before. It is lovely that our international boarders forge such good friendships with our British day students.

Former pupil Ollie to Longboard from Croatia to Greece! We wish Old Shebbearian Ollie Ryder-Green the best of luck in his forthcoming charity challenge which will see him longboarding 1500km from Croatia to Greece, via Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Albania in support of Cancer Research UK.
