In 2013, ONE°15 Member Leo Nagtegaal left Singapore and embarked on a voyage around the world. He shares his memories from the first leg of the trip.

24 April 2013

DEPARTURE FROM SINGAPOREWe finally left ONE° 15 Marina Sentosa Cove with Duchess, our Oyster 56 sailing yacht, in the morning of 24 April 2013 at 10.10 am. After 1.5 years of preparation, we were headed for Nongsa Point in Batam, the first stop on our voyage around the world.

Let me introduce the crew. There is me, Karin and our Indonesia crewman, Zubair. Karin and I are Dutch but I have been a Singapore Permanent Resident for a couple of years.

Duchess was well stocked with provisions and spare parts. Every space on board was filled with food, drinks and other products that we needed along the way. Upon arrival in Nongsa Point, we cleared customs and immigration and bought the last few items we required. Having Zubair with us came in handy. We realised on our very first day the importance of having a native speaker with us on our travels in Indonesia.

25 April 2013

ANCHORING IN LIMASAfter getting our passports back, we left Nongsa the next morning and took a quiet motoring trip for about 65 nautical miles. There was absolutely no wind but thankfully, we saw up to three nautical miles of current that really helped us.

On our way to Limas, we chanced upon three dolphins, the first sighting we encountered. But after anchoring on Limas, we were at one time surrounded by countless of dolphins. We went in the water quickly for a swim to see if we had a chance to “swim with the dolphins” but they were absolutely not interested in us and disappeared.

We spent the evening sitting outside, surrounded by complete silence. The full moon was out and the stars were shining brightly in the sky. It was a beautiful sight to behold – especially since we just left a busy metropolis like Singapore where there is so much light that seeing a star is a rarity.

27 April 2013

OUR FIRST CATCH The day before, we sailed in between the islands surrounding Linga, an island south of Batam. We had anchored here for the night and left early the next morning. The plan was to reach Bangka Island before dark, which was close to 100 nautical miles away. It was going to be a long day.

Around mid-morning, we discovered that we were not alone. We chanced upon another group of dolphins but this time, some even came towards the boat and started to play in front of the bow while we were doing eight knots (almost 15 km/hr). The water was very clear and we could see them even when they were underwater.

The sail was also the perfect opportunity for me to get out my fishing rod and gear. I set them up behind the boat and not long after, I caught my first mackerel, at just a nice size for the night’s dinner on the barbecue.

30 April 2013

ONWARDS TO KALIMANTANOn 30 April, we left a bay on the west coast of Belitung Island on our way to Kalimantan. It was going to be our first overnight sail. On the first day, we faced strong winds blowing at up to 15 to 20 knots. That is good sailing weather but as usual, it did not come from the right direction and at one time, we were well on our way in the direction of Bali instead of Kalimantan.

The weather worsened through the day and we saw about six serious rainstorms with winds well into 30 knots. During the night, we decided to motor only as Karin and Zubair were not experienced enough to sail and needed to concentrate on keeping watch.

The next day the wind had shifted in our favour and Duchess was doing a steady 8.6 knots with 12 to 13 knots of wind. It looked like she was enjoying it and so were we. We were clearly out of the doldrums now.

3 May 2013

ARRIVAL IN KUMAIAfter Kalimantan, we arrived in Kumai, a small town of about 5000 people along the Kumai River. Kumai is a trading port and tourist stop as trips to the Tanjung Puting National Park begin here. Getting up the river to Kumai was an adventure by itself. The charts were of course well out of date and where deep water was supposed to be, it was only getting shallower.

Fortunately there were some commercial ships on the horizon and we decided to follow the first to arrive. It was a ferry that was running faster than we were so staying close was not an option. Thanks to AIS, I managed to put waypoints in the plotter every time the ferry changed course so I got a perfect trail to follow. We got in without any further problems. In a few days, we were scheduled to embark on a three-day trip to the Tanjung Puting National Park to see the orang utans.

5-7 May 2013

TANJUNG PUTING NATIONAL PARK We arrived back on Duchess on 7 May from a three-day trip by boat and foot through the Tanjung Puting National Park. What an experience to see beautiful wild orang utans in their natural habitat! Sometimes they were less than a metre away and we were tempted to touch them.

The only way to reach the park is by boat, so Karin and I were picked up early Sunday morning before beginning the journey. Our first out of three stops was at Tanjung Harapan camp. Here, forest rangers rehabilitate the orang utans and prepare them to be re-introduced into the wilderness. Depending on the season and the amount of food in the jungle, they are fed twice a day. This is the ideal time to observe them as many come out of the forest for food.

During the feeding session, we noticed a clear pecking order. The alpha male, the King, had first rights. He would allow some females

to share with him, but that would cost them some favours. Others sneaked up to eat only when the King was done. The females also had their own pecking order. Different groups were friendly towards each other while others were definitely not part of the in crowd.

On our trip, we also saw the Proboscis monkeys with their funny noses and the Gibbons who are as fast as water. We also spotted Macaques, wild pigs, birds and butterflies. Unfortunately, we did not spot any crocodiles, which are also apparently well represented in the river.

We were completely isolated for three days with no phone and no Internet. At night, we slept under a klamboe on a mattress on the boat’s floor. We had a five-man crew, which included a skipper and his assistant, a guide, a cook and a helper, just for the two of us. The service was great; we were really spoiled by these very nice people!

I can go on and on about this trip. The beautiful scenery and the encounter with apes made for a truly unforgettable experience. The next day, Karin and I made some changes to the boat while Zubair made a quick trip into the park. After that, we were well on our way again.

Recognised five times as Best Asian Marina of the Year by the Asia Boating Awards and renown for good service standards among Members, Teo Joo Leng, the new General Manager of ONE°15 Marina, has his work cut out for him to bring the Club to the next level. Longitude finds out how he is coping six weeks into the job.

Having been in the service industry for over 15 years, it is not surprising to see Joo Leng very approachable and easy to talk to. And as the conversation pans out, it becomes clear

that beneath his youthful and friendly demeanor, Joo Leng is also driven, committed, and means business.

For example, prior to officially starting work at ONE°15, he checked himself into the Club’s hotel as a mystery customer to gain first-hand experience of the service standards. “I felt that this is the best and most direct way for me to understand what our guests and Members were really experiencing. I could see what is good and where I can probably come in to add value when I am on board,” explains Joo Leng.

Attributing his passion in enhancing the already high quality service standards at ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove to the first conversation he had with the Group Chairman Arthur Tay, Joo Leng shares, “I was inspired by Arthur's vision of growth and becoming the best in class. The underlying implication of these ambitions is simply that the Club is not an end, but a conduit to a bigger aspiration. While challenging, I also find the possibilities very exciting.” A firm believer that a step approach is an effective way to arrive at the final goal, Joo Leng sees his role at ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove to be one that sets the tone and paves the way for the growth trajectory ahead, he says, “ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove is our very first club. It is important that we excel here so that it serves as the flagship for future ONE°15s. To do so, we need good people who are passionate about the same cause and committed to deliver their best. Good people not only create a culture of excellence that differentiates us, but also makes it difficult for others to replicate the service experience we offer.”

Complementary to the emphasis on good service, Joo Leng reveals plans to enhance experiences for guests and Members through the replacement and renewal of Club infrastructure. Concurrently, his team is also looking to step up their efforts in understanding the preferences of the Members and the engagement with them via relevant club events and activities.

Despite being only six weeks into the job, Joo Leng has set ambitious targets for himself and the team. And it is evident that he fully intends to achieve, meet and, possibly, exceed all of them. Fortunately, he is one that is comfortable with scaling learning curve quickly in a fast-paced environment – thanks to his vast experiences with job scope and geographical rotations from his previous work.

He smiles, “I am mindful that I am in a new environment that has already been running for a while. Therefore, rather than seeing my role as coming in to disrupt the entire system, I see that it is pivotal for me to get to know the people and understand the existing process while looking at how I can come in to value add to the operations.”

On the professional front, Joo Leng is dedicated to bring the Club to new heights; he is just as driven on a personal level. “Off work, I enjoy taking time to cycle, swim and jog. Besides presenting a means to keep fit and relieve stress, engaging in these activities provide a window of personal space for me to reflect on key events and important conversations with an uninterrupted state of mind,” says Joo Leng. As a family man and a father of two, he also relishes spending time with his family on weekends.

“If one were to draw the parallel between ONE°15’s journey to date to an outing at sea, it would be one that is rewarding and with many defining moments. It requires little imagination to see

that our next destination is to become the finest marina club.” – T E O J O O L E N G , G E N E R A L M A N A G E R

After living in numerous cities, Deana Candelori now calls Singapore her home. Longitude sits down for a chat about her experience

in raising a family here.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME

D eana Candelori dons many hats. First and foremost, she is a wife and mother of two kids, with one more on the way. By day, she is the Head of Business Risk at Westpac Asia.

By night, you may find her teaching a fitness class at a gym. “Some people ask me where I get my energy from,” she laughs.

Deana’s seemingly boundless energy, coupled with ambition, has taken the 36-year-old all over the world. At just 24 years old, when most were training to be a chartered accountant, the Australian was already qualified to work in a large investment bank. She had previously done a traineeship with Pricewaterhousecoopers that accelerated her path.

Chasing a dream, she packed her bags and headed to London, where she worked with one of the biggest banks in the world, Barclays Capital. “Australia had a lot of opportunities,” she says. “But for a lady at 24, you want the biggest opportunity available. I decided to just take the plunge and move to London.”

After a stint in Barclays and then ABN AMRO Bank, Deana soon got tired of London. At the time, her boyfriend and future husband Paul Candelori was working at the United Nations (UN) in Paris. The plan was to join Paul in the city and take a sabbatical, but it just so happened that her credentials were well suited for another opening at the UN as well. Deana readily took it up and after a few months in Paris together, they were both posted to the UN office in Vienna.

Deana and Paul eventually returned home to Australia to tie the knot. Since the United Nations did not have as big a presence as it did in Europe, Deana took up a role in Australia’s leading bank, Westpac. Three years later, the couple welcomed a daughter and named her Vienna, after the city they lived in. Two years after that, their son Cruz was born.

Despite settling in life in Australia, Deana and Paul decided to uproot again. “I thought to myself, we achieved everything we wanted to in Australia quicker than we thought we would. We had gotten married, we had the kids, we could still juggle our careers while having a family and we built a lovely dream home. Now what?” she shares. “With both of us still being ambitious in our careers, we decided to seek a new adventure.”

As it turned out, the stars aligned perfectly. Paul’s company was looking to open an office in Singapore and Deana’s exact role was also being created in Westpac’s Asia Pacific office. In March 2014, the family officially moved to Singapore.

“Life in Singapore has been incredible. I have never felt more complete. I wake up in the morning and get the kids to school. I have a fulfilling job and when I return home from work, our helper has done the cleaning and cooking so I can focus on spending time with the kids,” she says. “After the kids have gone to bed, Paul and I can sneak out for a glass of wine. It’s very ideal,” she continues.

However, that had not always been the case. When the family first got here, the little ones – Vienna was just three and Cruz was only nine months – had a hard time adjusting. “They fell sick constantly! They were vulnerable to the heat and just kept catching every single bug,” she recalls. Thankfully, constant visits to the hospital are now a thing of the past. The silver lining is the kids have since developed a strong resilience to common bugs and can fully enjoy life on a tropical island.

“I’m a strong believer that light, sun and good weather creates really good moods. An outdoor lifestyle is the best thing you can give to a child,” Deana expresses. “Singapore is a constant playground for them.”

This year, the family found the perfect complement to their outdoor lifestyle – a membership with ONE°15 Marina. “We love the water. Our home back in Australia is on a beach. Plus, we don’t stay at home a lot and needed a place where we can go to relax. So ONE°15 is really the ideal home away from home,” Deana says. “The kids love it here. There’s the playground, the pool and the trampoline. We also get to meet a lot of people.”

In the recent months, the Candeloris have been busy getting ready to welcome a new member to the family. And with Singapore’s high medical standard, Deana and Paul have decided to have the baby here. Before that, the couple will head to the Maldives for a babymoon, with Vienna and Cruz in tow.

“We don’t know the gender yet. My husband loves surprises,” Deana reveals. “After awhile I kept convincing him to let us find out. But on hindsight, I kind of like that it’s going to be a surprise. It will make the birth even more special.”

Various booths entertained the crowd with games like Giant Jenga, Connect 4, Basketball Accuracy, Golf Putting, Nintendo Wii and Xbox Kinect. The scene resembled a carnival – cotton candy and popcorn booths were at the ready for guests to grab a snack, while a balloon artist roved around the Club, fascinating the kids with his creations.

One of the day’s highlights was an intriguing Magic Show. The magician amazed members of the audience with his mind-blowing tricks and invited them up on stage to take part in the performance. He created a light-hearted atmosphere in the air, garnering some laughs from the crowd.

ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove, Singapore turned nine in September and to celebrate its growth and success through the years, the Club threw a spectacular anniversary

bash. On 24 September, Members and guests gathered at the Club’s premises with their little ones in tow. Spirits were high for a day of fun under the sun.

The marina waters were packed with action as guests partook in a range of activities. Guests hopped on board yachts that took them on a relaxing Sea Trial around the Sentosa area. Those who wanted to experience being behind the wheel picked up a thing or two at the Sailing Trial, where they learned how to steer a sailboat. And for those who wanted something more thrilling, jet ski rides were available to get their adrenalines pumping. Participants up for a challenge entered an exciting kayak race that made for a memorable experience.

Back at the Club, the Infinity Pool was transformed into a fun-filled water playground. Kids clambered up the giant inflatable before sliding down and splashing into the pool. On land, a Storytelling Yoga session engaged kids in a unique activity that helped them

and Club Sandwiches. WOK°15 Kitchen served up an enticing plate of Steamed Live Bamboo Clam with Vermicelli and Minced Garlic. Guests could also enjoy a glass of house pour wine or mug of draught beer at the same price.

Later in the evening, ONE°15’s special nautical-themed anniversary cake was brought out for the cake-cutting ceremony. The ceremony was graced by Teo Joo Leng, General Manager of the Club. In his speech, he thanked Members for taking the time to come down, before blowing out the candles of the cake to enthusiastic applause.

As a wrap up to the event, a lucky draw was held for guests to take home some prizes. The grand prize – a one-night’s stay in the Marina View Room with complimentary breakfast for two – went to Wesley Lim. Other lucky winners of the day were Leong Yew Kit, Carole Ng, Neglen Mikael Bertil, David Chou and Margaret Siew. They were all smiles as they collected their prizes from General Manager, Teo Joo Leng.

ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove, Singapore began as just a barren landscape back in 2007. Nine years later, it has garnered a reputation as Asia’s Finest Marina. Such an accomplishment could not have been achieved without the continuous support of our Members. Hence, the Club would like to extend its gratitude and appreciation to each and every Member. A NETWORKING VOYAGE In place of the usual cocktail reception,

Members of ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove were invited to a special

networking event on the night of 16 September. This time, guests were taken on board Bay Suites for a relaxing and scenic sail along Marina Barrage. Held in conjunction with the first night of the F1 Grand Prix, the cruise gave Members the chance to catch the city come alive, all from the sea.

A group of 20 Members boarded the yacht at Clifford Pier before beginning the voyage. Also in attendance were the Membership team and Teo Joo Leng, General Manager of the Club. The yacht took the group pass the Merlion, which was aglow with a laser light display. It then sailed pass popular tourist destinations Marina Bay Sands and Gardens by the Bay. The sounds of F1 cars zooming in the distance could be heard, making the atmosphere a more exciting and energetic one.

As guests mingled with one another, free flow champagne, beer and canapés were served on the upper deck of the yacht. The beautiful city skyline provided the perfect backdrop for photo taking. As the yacht sailed back to Clifford Pier, guests came to a consensus that the evening was a great success. Not only did they forge new ties with one another, the voyage also allowed them to unwind and enjoy the pleasure of a night cruise.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR SECURITY OFFICERS!

On 22 July 2015 at around 4.40pm, twin infants were found unattended in a car under the hot sun. Security Executive Mohammad Nazir Bin Lajis

immediately proceeded to investigate and found the twin infants crying loudly. Their skins had turned a reddish shade and they were perspiring heavily. All car doors were locked.

Nazir immediately notified Assistant Safety and Security Manager Azhar Bin Hamid regarding the incident. Nazir, together with the Marina Team, conducted a search for the vehicle owners to no avail. As such, Azhar requested to cover the top of the car and window screens with towels so as to block the sun. The ambulance was immediately summoned and while waiting, Azhar decided to break open the passenger door with assistance from Marina Engineering to rescue the twin infants, who were showing signs of heat stress. The twins were successfully rescued and Azhar, along with Senior Luxury Yachting Manager Asrina Mahmood, brought them to the Fire Command Centre. Azhar requested Nazir to use wet towels to cover the twin infants and bring down their body heat. Subsequently, the Ambulance and Police arrived and took over the situation.

For their alertness, vigilance and quick response, both Azhar and Nazir were awarded a Certificate of Commmendation from the Singapore Hotel Association this year. We would like to congratulate and thank them for always striving to maintain a safe and secure Club!

SEA OF TIME

AN OCEAN VOYAGE Corum Admiral’s Cup Legend 47 Worldtimer

Corum’s Admiral’s Cup collection has encapsulated the historic link between the Swiss watchmaking brand and sailing since the 1960s. This year, the sporting icon proves itself to be the ultimate traveller’s watch with the inclusion of a world time complication. The Admiral’s Cup Legend 47 Worldtimer is equipped with an automatic calibre that displays a second time zone and its corresponding city. Selecting the time zone is as simple as pressing on the pusher at 2’oclock. And like any other timepiece from the Admiral Cup’s collection, the Legend 47 Worldtimer bears distinctive nautical markers. In the place of numbers, colourful nautical pennants adorn the dial, illustrating Corum’s deep ties to the sea.

Seafaring experiences have long influenced the creation of some of the world’s greatest timepieces. This season, we know what’s on the Christmas wishlist of every boater – a wrist companion that evokes the spirit of the nautical world. 1

ALL HANDS ON DECK Ulysse Nardin Grand Deck Marine Tourbillon

Ulysse Nardin’s visually and technologically intriguing Grand Deck Marine Tourbillon made a splash at Baselworld 2016. At one glance, it’s hard to wonder why. This stunner incorporates the elements of a ship’s deck to create a never-before-seen patented time display. The minute hand is shaped like the boom of a sailboat, pulled along by tiny ropes and pulleys. Every hour, the boom swings back across the dial with a mesmerising leap that takes about three to four seconds. Simultaneously, the hour is displayed with twin discs located at 12 o’clock. With hand-crafted wood marquetry on the dial that truly resembles a teak deck, it’s almost like having a miniature ship on your wrist.

NAVIGATING THE SEAS Montblanc 4810 ExoTourbillon Slim 110 Years Asia Edition

2016 was a special year for Montblanc as the watchmaker celebrated its 110th anniversary. Of course, only a remarkable timepiece is worthy of marking such a milestone. The Montblanc 4810 ExoTourbillon Slim didn’t disappoint. It combines the maison’s patented ExoTourbillon complication with the addition of a quick stop-second function. But what a yachtsman would find exciting is the 110 Years Asia Edition that features a delicately hand-painted map of the Asian continent on the dial. This piece of art adds an aesthetic appeal while embodying the passion for travel and exploration across the Atlantic Ocean. Each watch is a completely unique show-stopper – no individual hand-painted map is exactly the same as another.

SEASIDE CHARM Louis Vuitton Tambour Lovely Cup

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend. But for the lady with an affinity to the sea, the Louis Vuitton Tambour Lovely Cup is the rightful companion. This timepiece radiates a maritime spirit with two flags at 12 o’clock that translate to LV in marine alphabet. The Tambour collection’s iconic flower seconds hand is a playful addition while the rubber strap is embossed with a monogram for the signature Louis Vuitton look. It’s an elegant accessory for an evening out – 12 diamonds sit on the flange for a luxurious appeal. The watch is also just as great for a casual day by the sea. It’s water resistant to a depth of 100 metres should any spills or splashes occur.

BEST SUPERCAR Ferrari 488 GTB

There are supercars. And then there is the Ferrari 488 GTB. One of the Prancing Horse’s new launches for the year, the 488 GTB lets you drive like Sebastian Vettel. It provides track-level performance that can be enjoyed to the full even by non-professional drivers. The new turbocharged V8 engine sets the benchmark for other supercars, sitting at the top of its class for power output, torque and response times. Step on the accelerator and go from 0-100 km/h in just three seconds. To match such a performance, the 488 GTB sports an aggressive presence courtesy of deep front hood vents and sculptural flanks. The cabin itself is designed for a sporty feel with the cockpit completely tailored around the driver. A real winner in our books.

With the Patek Phillipe World Time Chronograph 5930G, the legendary Swiss watchmaker combined two complications – a chronograph and world-timer – all into a single timepiece. Such a rare combination, possibly an industry first, might seem too complex. But Patek Phillipe has managed to make the timepiece both legible and attractive. The outermost display element on the dial showcases 24 city names. A two-coloured 24-hour ring instantly tells the wearer if it’s night or day while a small gap between the cities disc and 24-hour ring accommodates the seconds scale for chronograph measurement. Rounding it off is an elegant hand-guilloched decoration at the centre, with the 30-minute chronograph counter sitting at 6’o clock. This timepiece is definitely worthy of a place on the wrists of collectors.

BEST WOMEN’S HIGH JEWELLERY Cartier Magicien Collection

Even if you don’t believe in magic, Cartier’s new Haute Joaillerie collection will leave you spellbound. Split into three sections – Magic of Design, Magic of Light and Magic of Nature – each piece in the collection showcases the expertise of Cartier’s master craftsmen. They captivate and entice with innovate aesthetics weaved with stunning diamonds and precious gems. Take for example the Incantation necklace, where tiny geometric patterns paved with precious designs interlace. Like a conjuring trick, all it takes is a single touch to invert and transform the necklace to sit closer to the neck, akin to a choker-style. The sapphire pendant is detachable and can be mounted onto a ring. With such possibilities on a single piece, magic has never seemed more real.

BEST YACHT Sunreef Supreme 68

Luxury catamaran manufacturer Sunreef Yachts has completely changed the game with its new Sunreef Supreme range. This audacious line is designed to produce the world’s most spacious and lifestyle-oriented boats. The first unit from the range – the Sunreef Supreme 68 – was unveiled at this year’s Singapore Yacht Show to much fanfare. The 68ft sailing catamaran boasts a total living space of nearly 300 square metres, usually only seen on superyachts above 78ft. Taking to the seas has become increasingly luxurious – a new, radical concept of the superstructure allows the saloon and exterior deck to be on the same level, hence creating an enormous main room surrounded with floor to ceiling glass. The yacht’s volume also accommodates a large galley, multiple storage spaces, a generous master suite and additional guest cabins.

BEST FIRST CLASS Etihad Airways The Residence

No one does First Class like Etihad Airways. Forget capsule seating, or even tiny private cabins. Why not fly in a three-room suite, complete with a living room, double bedroom and ensuite private bathroom equipped with a shower? Etihad Airways’ The Residence offers just that, along with an in-flight chef and a dedicated butler specially trained by Savoy Academy. The Residence is located on the forward upper deck of the airline’s Airbus A380s, only available for select routes. Since The Residence is equipped for single or double occupancy, passengers can choose to fly solo or with a partner. Sumptuous décor elements like custom carpets, table marquetry and soft furnishings enhance the experience. The only way it gets better than this is to fly in a private jet.

Immerse in Dazzling LightsThe snow and cold brings an added dimension of beauty to Canada’s most famous tourist spot, Niagara Falls. Sections of the waterfall freeze over to form beautiful ice formations and a chilly mist rises above it, making the scene even more magical.

During this season, the Niagara Falls area also transforms into a stunning palette of colour with millions of sparkling lights, courtesy of the Ontario Power Generation Winter Festival of Lights. These lights make up beautifully illuminated displays located along a route that travels along the Niagara Parkway, past the roaring Niagara Falls, into the Dufferin Islands and into surrounding tourist areas. As part of the Festival, when dusk descends, the Falls are also illuminated in the colours of the rainbow, creating a spectacular sight.

Every year, millions of people come from all over the globe to bask in the holiday spirit here. Stay on later in the night for a fireworks display that will light up the skies. Be sure to check out the laser light displays, the 3D projection mapping show and music performances by renowned stars. With such an exciting array of activities on top of the display of lights, the Festival is not something you would want to miss.

Go on a Winter Adventure Boasting a dramatic mountain backdrop, Whistler, located on the West Coast of Canada in British Columbia, was the host of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Even prior to its Olympic fame, Whistler has always been a favourite year-end destination for Canadians and non-Canandians alike. With over 8,100 acres of snow-covered slopes, 16 alpine bowls, three glaciers, world-class terrain peaks and more than 200 marked trails, it’s a skier’s dream come true.

Even if your idea of a good time doesn’t involve strapping on ski boots, there’s still plenty to do. Fly through the forest on an exhilarating zipline. Or if you prefer to be on the ground, race across the snow-covered forests on board a dog sled.

For a stunning 360-degree view of Whistler, get on the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola that takes you from mountain to mountain.

Once you’re done with the day’s activities, retreat back to the Village, the central neighbourhood of Whistler. The Village is always bustling with activity, even when it’s cold outside. Refuel with a large array of food to choose from, then mingle with friends both old and new while grabbing a drink at the Village’s many bars. Spend hours browsing the Village’s retail outlets for fine art, luxury fashion and the latest outdoor sports equipment. From time to time, guests can also catch free open-air concerts and street entertainment.

Skate and Walk On IceAt the beginning of the year, Ontario’s scenic Rideau Canal freezes over, creating one of the world’s largest naturally frozen skating rinks. Bundle up the kids and rent some skates, then glide approximately 7.8 km through the city. Access to the skating rink is free and some residents of Ontario even use the rink to commute to work. To warm you up, concession stands selling hot soup, hot chocolate and the famous BeaverTail pastry are located along the way.

For something a little different, take a trip to Jasper National Park in Alberta. One of Jasper’s most popular winter activities is the Maligne Canyon Icewalk Tour. Maligne Canyon is the deepest accessible canyon in Jasper National Park. Here, discover hidden ice caves, weave through a maze of natural ice formations and gaze up at ice waterfalls that have frozen in mid-cascade along the canyon’s rock faces. The cold has made this canyon truly fascinating to explore.05

Greet the King of the ArcticGet up close and personal to majestic polar bears in Canada’s Churchill, known as the “polar bear capital of the world”. Churchill sits right in the path of the polar bear’s seasonal trek as they move from the tundra onto the winter ice at Hudson Bay to hunt for seals. Here, tourists can safely witness the polar bears in their natural habitat from unique tundra buggies. These tundra buggies are equipped to travel on snowy terrain and allow you to come face-to-face with the polar bears in comfort and safety. You can also opt to stay at wilderness lodges strategically built on the bears’ migration route. Whichever you choose, the experience would surely make for the trip of a lifetime.

If you’re lucky, you may even get the chance to catch the ethereal northern lights in all its glory. Churchill is one of the best places in the world to see this natural phenomenon. These otherworldly dancing curtains of light are most resplendent in January through March.
