From the Principal Unfortunately we had to postpone the swimming sports last week because of the weather. Whilst it did not pour rain, it had rained throughout the night and the conditions would have been very soggy for spectators. We appreciate that it is always a bit confusing when arrangements are changed and the fallback postion is always to run a normal school day. With our new phone system, we have the capacity to easily change our phone message and our intention to postpone the sports was recorded by 8 am. We will continue to do this in the future and I encourage you to check this message if you are in doubt about the arrival time of excursions, whether it is a free dress day etc. Our Plan B for the sports is that we will run a competitors-only competition tomorrow on Thursday 8 March. The district association is also running a Seniors Sports day on that date and any student who wants to participate in both events has been notified that they need to see the sports leader Mr Martin Yates in the first instance. There were some wonderful House costumes last week and we will increase the prizes at the House Athletics sports next term so save them for then. Bendigo Bank is a wonderful supporter of the school and the young people in our community. Recently two of our Year 12 students from 2011 received substantial scholarships to assist them in their transition into university. Elsha Cottier and Victoria Downie were very worthy recipients and inspirational for their hard work and commitment.
Gang Gang Issue 3 Term 1 7 March 2012
Last week, two staff members attended the professional learning for a new program called Quicksmart. This is a maths program which is designed for Year 8 students who are having difficulties. It is a very intensive program and it is very highly regarded across the nation. I also attended an information session about it and think that it will be a fabulous addition to the Maths programs within the school. Do not forget that tonight is the launch of Scribblit, which is the student-created anthology of writing. I encourage you to read your child’s copy and come along and celebrate the work of our talented students tonight.
It is my great pleasure to announce the membership of the new School Council:

Exhibits include furniture, garments, graphic and product design, short films (also shown in Top Screen), interactive media, print layout, photography, food product planning, mechanical and electronic projects. Works are accompanied by folios and design plans comprising work briefs, client feedback and evaluation.
The exhibition and associated educational programs are a valuable resource for current VCE students. For program times see: www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/seasonofexcellence.html
Congratulations as well to Siobhan Bubner (Year 12) who represented Warrandyte High School and the Warrandyte Lion’s Club at the next level of competition in the Lion’s Club Youth of the Year competition. Siobhan won the public speaking section of the competition which is an outstanding achievement.

Lions Youth of the Year
On Sunday 4 March, I competed in the Regional Lions Youth of the Year Quest. With two other participants from Parkwood Secondary and Doncaster East Secondary, we spoke about a current issue that we are passionate about. I spoke about the benefits of youth volunteering and how it contributes to our society, and was fortunate enough to win the Public Speaking section.
Overall it was a great experience and I would definitely encourage others to get involved as you learn a lot and become more confident in yourself and in your skills.

LOTE News Italy Tour We are currently looking at taking a tour to Italy in 2013 and it all depends on students numbers. We estimate that the trip would cost approximately $4,000.00 per student for a 14 day tour. We are now calling for interested students to register with the LOTE Department or Mrs Butterworth in the General Office.

Careers News Year 12, Information Evening
Following the information sessions for Year 12 pathways on February 13 all year 12 students
have been allocated an appointment this term with myself to guide them through the VTAC
website and to encourage them to start early in planning for 2013. These one on one sessions
are going very well, I have had some parents attend these sessions with their child and wish to
advise that all parents are welcome. Check with your child the date scheduled for their session
if you wish to attend.
Year 10, Information Evening
The year 10 Parent information evening was held on Tuesday 6 March 2012. Thank you to all
who attended and I hope you went away with a lot more knowledge regarding the next three
years of your child’s schooling at Warrandyte High School. Packages were given out with
information on EXPO’s, open days, informative websites, resume help and a Work Experience
Arrangement Form. Work Experience is part of the curriculum at Warrandyte High; we
encourage all parents to get involved in helping students secure a placement that suits their
career plan. If you need any help with this feel free to contact me at school.
If you were unable to attend the evening, additional information packages and Work Experience
forms will be available in my office. Work Experience will take place on 25 – 29 June 2012. If for
some reason your child does not secure a placement then they will be required at school. The
forms need to be back to me by 31 May 2012.
Any parent or student who has questions or needs advice, please email me and I will endeavor
to answer you as soon as possible. [email protected]

Year 10 Lawn Bowls Excursion
Gang Gang Issue 3 Term 1 7 March 2012
We are very pleased that we have been able to arrange our Year 10 students a lawn bowls
excursion again this year. This is a valuable learning experience connecting with a different
sport/recreational activity which still demands considerable skills, thought and perseverance. All
Year 10 students should make every effort to return their payment and permission forms prior to
the 9 March.
WHS Staff riding in support of MS
A group of staff are completing the Melbourne summer cycle on March 25th to raise funds for
Multiple Sclerosis. This is an amazing cause. You can see details on
www.msmelbournecycle.org.au. We are trying to raise as much money as we can through
sponsorship and donations, if you feel you would like to contribute you can bring donations into
the school office or you can simply donate to our team “Warrandyte High School” online at
above address. If you would like further details please contact Mrs Rayner during school time.
Lunch time sports competition
We shall be starting the long awaited home group sports competitions in the next couple of
weeks. Class captains in Years 7, Year 8 and Year 9 will be given the responsibility of
organising their home group teams and encouraging as many members of their home group to
get involved and take part. The Year 7,8 and 9 competitions will be volleyball this term. So try to
get involved!
Take the “Premier’s Active Families Challenge – 19th March – 30th April”
We are encouraging all students, particularly the Year 7’s and Year 8’s to Get active and have
fun and register for the 30 day challenge. It’s a fun, free, great way to be healthy and active. All
you have to do is to complete at least 30 minutes of activity everyday for 30 days. Students,
families and the school benefits; there are various discounts at Rebel Sport, YMCA passes, and
heaps of prizes. The more people we get signed up from our school the more free gear we can
receive for our school.
Look at the form and details that your student brings home, or visit
www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/challenge to gain further details. So come have a go and get active
and take the challenge!

Learning & Teaching Someone once asked Albert Einstein: “What weapons will they be using in the World War III?”
His reply was, “I have no idea – but I know what weapons they’ll use in the World War IV: sticks
and stones.”
Few people predicted the kind of technological advances we are seeing these days. Ten years
ago, the idea that every students would be using computers in schools was a pipe dream. Now
– at Warrandyte at least – students in Year 7, 8, 10 and 11 make daily use of computers that
are 100 – maybe 1000 times more powerful than the leading personal computers of ten years
ago.
Gang Gang Issue 3 Term 1 7 March 2012
These technological changes are having their impact on every aspect of the curriculum.
Photography, for example, has been revolutionised in the digital age. Each Wednesday
afternoon, while our Year 9 students work on their Individual Extension Projects, a powerpoint
presentation is running, made up of photographs of them at work in the morning, and including
reminders of the work they have to complete that afternoon. [Most of us will remember having
to drop off our film one day, and picking up the photos the next after they’d been processed.]
An exciting development at the school has been the completion of our new Dark Room, where
students can also become familiar with the old technologies of film developing and enlargement.
We’ve recently received a donation of 18 enlargers. This is now ready for use.
In our ‘brave new world’ of the 2010’s and the 2020’s, old and new technologies will continue to
co-exist.
.
Netbooks
The new netbooks contain a suite of software called EduStar. One of these software programs
is called Inspiration 9. It’s a mind mapping program that our Year 7 students have found really
useful. Over in the Library, Beryl Gale has been encouraging teachers to look at a resource
called Clickview. Clickview enables teachers to access short films – over 3000 of them - that
have been developed for use in schools. Name the subject or topic, it’s almost certain that you’ll
find a film or movie on that topic.
Many Year 12 English students regular submit draft essays to their teachers for comment – via
email. Several teachers are exploring a tool called Tracking Changes which simplifies the task
of giving feedback to students. Another computer-based development in this regard is the Year
12 English blog, which gives students access to resources for Year 12 English 24/7.
The introduction of Daymap – a computer-based roll marking system has simplified the
recording of absences. Parent-teacher interviews are now arranged via computer. Increasingly
computer technology is becoming embedded in the day-to-day work of teachers and students.
It’s challenging, but it’s also exciting.
Scribblit
On Wednesday March 7, SCRIBBLIT was officially launched by Louise Le Nay. Louise is an
actor and a writer. She appeared for several years in the Australian TV series Prisoner – she
played Sandy Edwards - and in Australian films (Emoh Ruo, The More Things Change). She
has written a novel (The Hero) and has been a script writer and story editor for virtually every
major Australian TV drama series: Neighbours, MDA, Blue Heelers … Her most recent
publication is an article on breast cancer which appeared in The Age Good Weekend
magazine, entitled Chaos Theory.
Copies of SCRIBBLIT are available from the General Office at a cost of $20 per copy.
Next time, I’ll be discussing the question: “What is Warrandyte High School doing to meet the
needs of every student.”

Student Wellbeing News
The term has got off to a very swift and busy start with many programs delivered in Term 1 at
most year levels. Please take note of any major programs that your child may be participating
in.
Year 11 Peer Support
There are 18-20 Year 11 student leaders who have volunteered to build and refine their
leadership skills in 2012 in order to run some classroom and lunchtime activities with the Year 7
students. They have been involved with Kate Wilde and myself for 2 days of fantastic fun-filled
leadership changes. It’s always such a positive and memorable experience not only for the
students, but also for Kate and I. The leaders have already run some very original lunchtime
activities for the students such as the Mobile Phone Amazing Race. Coming up this Friday the
9th at lunchtime is the Music Trivia Quiz and on Friday the 16th of March there will be the annual
lunchtime performance of Year 7 X-FACTOR where students are invited to share their talents
with the rest of the Year 7 students and the Year 11 Peer Support team. This has traditionally
been the highlight of the Peer Support program as so many students participate and the support
for the performers is overwhelmingly positive.
Year 11 Start-Me-Up Conference
This year we will be presenting our very first wellbeing conference for the Year 11 students on
Thursday the 15th of March. The conference is focused on improving student motivation and
connectedness to each other. The Program includes a very well regarded REACH Foundation
Program designed for Year 11 students to tap into their dreams and aspirations. This cohort
has already had 2 REACH workshops and they have been memorable and powerful
experiences. There is also a workshop from Elevate Education on Basic Study Skills to improve
student achievement, in addition to a session of team-building where students compete in a
range of quite ridiculous games to see the overall Champion Year 11 English class. The cost of
the program in $20 and the students need to have their money into the office before the day of
the program
Year 12 Big Love Conference
This is the second year that we have offered this wellbeing conference for our most senior
students. Last years event was such a success that we had to run the conference again and
this year the program was even more jam-pack with great opportunities for the students. There
were workshops and presentations from: Elevate Education on study skills, Kate Wilde, Amy
Johnstone (Eastern Community Legal Services, Emily Cahill (relaxation and meditation) and a
great performance from the comedy duo ‘Anyone for Tennis’. The evaluations from the program
this year were also very positive.
Year 7 Clans Day
We are very pleased to report that on Monday the 20th of February all Year 7 students
participated in Warrandyte High Schools annual Year 7 Clans Day (inter-class) Challenge. All
the staff and students involved had a great day. The Peer Support leaders certainly enjoyed
practising their newfound leadership skills with the Year 7 students. Congratulations to 7.4 for
their winning performance this year. Clans Day certainly assisted the students to build positive
relationships and promote a sense of class spirit within the new core groups.
Gang Gang Issue 3 Term 1 7 March 2012
Year 9 & 10 Digital Video Opportunity- The Movie Makers
I have been successful in securing a small grant for National Youth Week for a group of 16
students to participate in training with a professional moviemaker James Birrell (and some
sessions with Kate Wilde) to produce their own short film on Happiness and it’s Causes. The
students will take footage on what makes them happy and then edit their short film to 5 minutes.
The short films will be shown in National Youth Week to their year levels and voted on to
determine the best three movies. It’s a great program and I am looking forward to it. Thanks to
the National Youth Week Council for the opportunity.
The School Focused Youth Services: Girlosophy Program
Kate Wilde and myself have been running a special program just for the girls this term, involving
a small group in Year’s 8, 9 and 10. We are learning about self-esteem, risk-factors and other
wellbeing issues facing young teens these days. They will then be working with young girls from
Warranwood Primary School next term to help them understand how to maintain a healthy self-
esteem in readiness for high school.
Natalie Manser
Wellbeing Leader
Parent Association
At the recent Parent Association meeting, there was much to do! New office bearers were
elected and I would like to congratulate the following parents who are actively involved in the
school:
President: Robyn Wallace
Treasurer Alisha Eldridge
Secretary Claire Gardiner
The outgoing President, Judy Finger has done all of these roles since the committee was set up
six years ago. We are very fortunate to have her expertise and experience until the end of the
year and look forward to finding out all that she does to make all aspects of the Parent
Association so successful.
Trivia Night
A Trivia Night working party has formed and are busily organizing our major fundraiser for the
year. The new date is Saturday 6th June. It will be held in the multipurpose room of Warrandyte
Primary School. The theme is “MEDICAL”. We are working to raise funds for a defibralator – a
standard piece of first aid equipment these days. Heart attacks are not confined to any particular
age group and sophisticated machines now exist for everyone to use. This is an important asset
for the school so that everyone is safe and prepared.
