Although the risk has not yet completely passed, the recent cooler weather has brought some

relief to the hardworking CFA volunteers around the State. We all share concern for those who suffered loss during the recent bushfires; particularly those who were affected by the Warrandyte and Kangaroo Ground incidents and we remain on alert for future threats

Open Evening - 25 March

21 days to go

From the Assistant Principal Student drop off/pick up We have had a number of complaints regarding parents picking up or dropping off their students in areas that are unsafe. Parents are reminded that they cannot drop off or pick up their children in the top staff car park, or illegally outside the school office in the lower car park. These areas are very busy at the beginning and start of the school day and are ‘no standing’ zones. There is a one way drop off/pick up zone at the top of the school on Warrandyte Road where parents are able to collect their students from. There is also a car park behind the gym where parents are able to wait for their child. Please consider the safety of your child and other children at the school. Open Night For 2014 we will be conducting Open Night a little differently and moving it forward to 25 March to capture the better conditions and light that come with daylight savings. Warrandyte High will be on display between 4pm and 8pm with a large number of interactive activities occurring including make your own pizzas, maths games, outdoor education activities and sporting displays. So if you know any prospective parents tell them to come along and experience Warrandyte for themselves. Current parents are also more than welcome!

Year 12 Big Love Conference

On Monday 24 February, all Year 12 students attended ‘The Big Love Conference’, where we had a number of guest speakers come in.

Our first experience was with Elevate Education who showed us studying techniques to use throughout the year to help us with SAC’s (School Assessed Coursework) and exams. After morning tea we were greeted by volunteers from REACH who spoke to us about the decisions we’ll have to make once we leave school and the ‘barriers’ we could face when starting our career paths and giving us ideas on how to overcome them.

Gratitude was also a major lesson we experienced at ‘The Big Love Conference’ and this was taught to us by Hugh from the ‘Resilience Project’. Hugh spoke about volunteer work he has done with children in third world countries.

‘The Big Love Conference’ was an enjoyable, informative day.

Careers

I am the Careers Leader in 2014. For those of you who haven’t met me I have been at WHS for 6 years working in the PE/Health and Science departments and also as a Level Leader in the Senior School for 4 years. Careers is an important area of the school and is not just for the Year 11 and 12 students. It is best to start preparing and planning early. This can include researching courses and career ideas online, attending university Open Day and attending Career Expos. Library News In the library we have had a busy start to the year and have lots of exciting things planned for 2014.

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥St Valentine’s Day Competition ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

Our first competition required students to match lovers with the movies in which they appear.

Some were easy like ‘When Harry met Sally’ but others such as ‘Casablanca’ and ‘From here to

eternity’ required an internet search. Seven entries got all eighteen movies correct and out of these an overall winner was drawn. Congratulations to Bethany Cummings of year 7 who received a book voucher for her efforts.

New Books

Lots of new titles have arrived for the start of the year. We have something to suit a range of

tastes from the graphic novels of ‘Naruto’, ‘Asterix’ and ‘Tin Tin’ to extra copies of ‘Divergent’ and ‘The fault in our stars’ which have been popular choices due to upcoming movie releases.

Students are reminded that if the library does not have a copy of the book they want to read they

can request that it be purchased. All they need to do is add the book to the green sheet at the front desk.

Mobile phones and electronic devices

The library aims to provide a quiet environment for students to work during their study periods. The use of mobile phones and other electronic devices during this time is discouraged to ensure that the use of these devices does not interfere with effective study habits. Therefore the following guidelines apply:

• Mobile phones and other electronic devices must be turned off and kept out of sight whilst studying in the library.

• If a student is required to listen to a podcast or view a film as part of their study they must seek permission to do so from the staff member on duty.

Upcoming Events

• Get ready for our St Patrick’s Day week of celebrating everything Irish • Everything old is new again… vintage is cool…. Check out our new pink bookshelf

dedicated all things vintage • Book clubs are running on Wednesdays • It’s a jungle out there….. our Open Night theme….

Music News

New music students from Year 7 will start their lessons in the coming week. We have had an enormous amount of interest in the program and as well as lessons with their Instrumental Music teacher students will be required to be members of the Junior Band. Mr Darling will be taking Junior band this year with a focus on commitment, team building and learning a cool repertoire –selected by both him and Mr Maillardett. The Junior Band practice will help them prepare to join the symphonic band next year or even in term 4.

Our VCE music students are preparing for their first technical SAC on March 26. The group are working together to inspire and support each other. The class went off to the recital centre last week to see the ‘Top Acts’ Music Performers and Investigators made up of talented students from 2013. Between concerts we had lunch on Southbank before heading back for the second concert.

Page 9: Issue 3 Term 1 2014 PRS docx - Warrandyte High Schools/Gang Gang/Issue3_Term1_2014.pdf · Italy Tour 2015 - Rome, Florence, Venice here we come! Calling all interested students from

We then debriefed as a team. The students were very inspired by what they heard. Their main lessons were: more practice, working on stage craft and presentation, building confidence, learn as much repertoire by memory as possible, demonstrate a range to technical skill and pause before beginning. These tips will help them all to prepare and be ready for their performance at the end of the year.

PE and Sports News

The year has started in full swing in the Physical Education and Sports department. Students from Year 7 – 9 have all completed a unit of fitness testing and students in electives units in Year 9 and 10 are learning about different games and strategies to implement improve performance. Students are reminded to ensure they name their sports uniform as we are starting to get a bundle of unnamed lost property in our office. Students in Years 7 and 8 Health are also busy learning about the different domains of health and the human lifespan. It is a timely reminder that some students are still yet to purchase the health workbook. If you could please check with your child if they have been given a copy of the e-health book and if not if you could please organise for this to be purchased from Campion. The health book is a computer based workbook and without it your child is unable to complete the required work. All students in Year 7 – 10 PE are now starting a unit in Rugby. As part of the PE curriculum we are fortunate enough to have Melbourne Storm representatives come to our school and run a Rugby program. The cost of the program is $3 for Year 7, 9 and 10 students and $4 for year 8 students. If this money could be returned ASAP to the General Office it would be greatly appreciated. In addition we have also organised an excursion to the local Lawn Bowls club as part of our year 9 Physical Education program. In the past this has been a very successful program where students get coaching from local members and it is always enjoyable. There is a cost of $15 which needs to be paid and consent returned by March 10. This can be done via Compass or at the General Office. If you have any questions regarding these incursions/excursions please feel free to contact me. There will be more incursion/excursions organised for other year levels over the year. With the start of the year has also come the start of a new sports competition. Unfortunately due to forecast bad weather we have had to reschedule our swimming sports to Thursday 6 March. This will hopefully be a great day with the sun shining. Students are reminded to get their costumes ready and come prepared to swim and represent their house. Winning competitors of each event will be selected to represent WHS at the division swimming sports. Just a reminder that this is a compulsory school day and students not attending sports will not be able to represent the school in other teams late in the year. The interschool sports program has also started with a bang. Our senior volleyball and cricket teams went out last week and on Thursday 27 February all Year 8 students represented the school in softball, baseball, cricket and basketball. At the time of writing this the intermediate volleyball and cricket teams are preparing for their competition. All reports from the competitions so far is that Warrandyte High School has again shone against other schools of a much larger size. Student’s teamwork, sportsmanship and determination have all been mentioned by other schools and all students should be congratulated on their efforts. More detailed reports from each of the coaches are to follow. There are many more competitions to come over the year and we encourage all students to get involved, have fun and represent their school with pride. If at any stage you or your child has any questions regarding the Physical Education or Sports program please do not hesitate to contact one of the members of the PE department.

Year 8 interschool basketball On Thursday 27 February I had the pleasure of taking out two girls and two boys teams to the interschool basketball competition. Whilst compared to other schools our teams were undermanned and undersized all students gave 100% whilst competing in anywhere between 5 and 7 games throughout the day. All 4 teams were led by their captains (Matthew Baynon, Phoebe Joy, Hayden Bryant and Lara Villlani) and coached by 4 of our sporting leaders of the school (Josh Kennedy, Callum Grant, Jessie Thomas-Connor and Holly Mulder). The boys A team had success winning 2 of their games and narrowly losing 3. Whilst the other teams did not have as much success it was great to see the students develop not only their skills but their teamwork throughout the day. It was also great to see and hear Warrandyte High School students loudly cheering on their fellow teams around the stadium. A big thank you must go to the senior sporting leaders as without them all teams would not have been able to compete. They did a fantastic job coaching, scoring and mentoring the Year 8 students and from watching them and hearing their stories I think they learnt from the experience. I look forward to working with all the students again at another interschool competition.

Junior Duke of Edinburgh Achievements

Last Wednesday evening we held our first awards evening for the Duke of

Edinburgh Group. It was great to share in

the achievements of our small student group who undertook the compass award last semester.

Each student presented highlights from

their experiences throughout the award, in particular their exciting expedition. A

representative from Awards Victoria

came to present the group with their

awards and certificates, a fantastic achievement.

We now move onto the Bronze Duke of

Edinburgh award. So watch this space for further news as our school group goes from strength to strength. It is never too late to join in the award scheme; if you are interested in joining our award

group, or if you would like more information please contact Mrs Rayner.

Good luck to the Bronze participants this year!

Senior sport sign ups

As our senior students approach the final sporting competitions for their year in Term 2, the sign up week has been designated as the final week of this term (week beginning 31st March). Please

think about which sporting teams you wish to sign up for and make sure you show your interest! If you need further information please look at the sport education notice board outside the gym or speak to Mrs Rayner.

Disney’s THE LITTLE MERMAID JR. is playing at the Clayton Community Theatrette from Thursday 3 April through to Sunday 13 April 2014. The 60 minute musical, designed for middle-school aged performers, is based on the 2008 Broadway production and the 1989 Academy Award® winning animated feature film and offers the same classical tale that everyone knows and loves. The KIDZ ACT cast contains approximately 52 students led by company founder and director, Callum Hosking.

One of our students, Meg Hambleton from Year 7 was successfully cast to take part in this

wonderful workshop which involves training and learning Live Performance skills and techniques

suitable for professional standards. Over 140 students applied to take part but they only had room

for 50 students. Well done Meg!
