French cinema is covered with Thérèse Desqueyroux (starring Audrey Tautou from Amelie) and Populaire while American cinema is represented by a modern retelling of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, Mud with Matthew McConaughey and the film that director Steven Soderbergh claims will be his last: Behind The Candelabra. Filmmaker Richard Linklater reteams with Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy for their third ‘Before’ film, Before Midnight which may be the best of the trilogy. There is also the latest picture from Neil Jordan, Byzantium (part of which was filmed in Beara) and two great documentaries: The Act Of Killing and I Am Breathing. There are also two special events taking place at Triskel Christchurch this month: The opening night screening of Come As You Are will be followed by a Q&A with Asta Philpot, whose life story influenced the film. We will also be hosting the Irish Premiere of Brian De Palma’s Passion and after the screening there will be a talk focussing on the director’s work. With a filmography that includes such cinematic icons as Carrie, Dressed To Kill, Scarface, The Untouchables and Carlito’s Way, De Palma has proven to be a masterful visual storyteller and his latest film is no exception. When ruthless executive Christine (Rachel McAdams - Midnight In Paris) crosses the line by stealing ideas from her admiring protégée Isabelle (Noomi Rapace - The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo), a vicious cat-and-mouse game takes place between the two women. Imagine a modern-day Bette Davis and Joan Crawford vehicle with Hitchcock-like twists and turns, and that comes some way to accurately describing this stylish and wickedly humorous thriller.
