17 – 21 MAY 21 JUNE – 4 JULY17 – 30 MAY

Director: Tobias Lindholm. Starring: Johan Philip Asbæk, Søren Malling, Dar Salim. Denmark 2012. 103 mins. Danish with English subtitles.

In this topical thriller from the writer of Borgen, Somali pirates overrun a Danish freighter in the Indian Ocean. Lindholm builds up the tension through the ordeal of his three main characters, the ship’s cook (Asbæk), the shipping company boss (Malling) and his impetuous assistant (Salim). Fans of Scandi-drama will recognise these and other stalwarts of Danish TV, but their versatility in this almost documentary-style film is especially impressive.

Director: Quentin Tarantino. Starring: Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, Christoph Waltz. USA 2012. 165 mins.

Cult director Quentin Tarantino follows INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS with this, his first period western, starring Jamie Foxx as ruthless bounty hunter Django. Freed from slavery by German gunslinger Dr King Schultz (Waltz), Django sets out to rescue his wife from brutal Mississippi plantation boss Calvin Candle (DiCaprio). Django’s campaign of cold-blooded revenge is shot through with the director’s trademark black humour, sparky dialogue and dazzling visual flair. Featuring a star-studded cast at the top of their game, DJANGO UNCHAINED is a cinematic treat from breathless start to brutal finish.

Director: Régis Roinsard. Starring: Romain Duris, Déborah François. France 2012. 111 mins. French with English subtitles.

If you combined the wit and charm of THE ARTIST with the period feel of Mad Men (and a little bit of ROCKY’s competitive edge thrown in for good measure), the result would be first-time director Roinsard’s enjoyable romcom POPULAIRE. Set in Normandy in 1958, the film centres on country girl Rose (François, THE PAGE TURNER), who leaves behind her father’s grocery store to follow her dream of becoming a secretary. When her new boss Louis (Duris, THE BEAT THAT MY HEART SKIPPED) decides to enter her for the local speed-typing competition, he moves her into his country house to oversee the training personally. The film’s charismatic two leads make a believable ‘will they/won’t they?’ couple, captured perfectly in a Rock Hudson/Doris Day style by BAFTA-winning cinematographer Guillaume Schiffman. Contains a moderate sex scene.

Director: Susanne Bier. Starring: Pierce Brosnan, Trine Dyrholm, Kim Bodnia. Denmark/Sweden/Italy/France/Germany 2012. 116 mins. English and Danish with English subtitles.

THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL meets SHIRLEY VALENTINE in this uplifting romance by Oscar winner Susanne Bier (BROTHERS, IN A BETTER WORLD) starring Pierce Brosnan and an acclaimed Danish cast, some of whom you will recognise from the TV series The Bridge. En route to his son’s wedding in Sorrento, widower Philip (Brosnan) literally bumps into Ida (Dyrholm), the mother of the bride who, having just been cleared of cancer, is attending the wedding without her unfaithful husband. The two leads are clearly enjoying their roles as a heartbroken widower who had given up on love and a loyal wife who never got what she deserved, and the chemistry between them is palpable in this charming and life-affirming tale.

THE RElUCTaNT FUNDaMENTalIST (15)

Director: Mira Nair. Starring: Riz Ahmed, Liev Schreiber, Kiefer Sutherland, Kate Hudson. USA/UK/Qatar 2012. 130 mins.

From award-winning director Mira Nair (MONSOON WEDDING), and based on the acclaimed novel by Moshin Hamid, THE RELUCTANT FUNDAMENTALIST leads us through the beguiling worlds of New York, Lahore and Istanbul to explore prejudice and the phenomenon of globalisation. Changez Khan (Ahmed), a young Pakistani professor, was educated at Princeton and was a brilliant business analyst on Wall Street. He had a glittering future ahead of him, and the beautiful and sophisticated Erica (Hudson), with whom he was set to share that future. In the aftermath of 9/11, the alienation and suspicion he suddenly experiences drives him back to Lahore. There, it is not long before his charisma and intelligence catapult him to become a leader, both in the eyes of Pakistani students who revere him, and the American government that suspects him.

THE PlaCE BEYOND THE PINES (15)

24 – 30 MAY

Directors: Kirk De Micco, Chris Sanders. Voices: Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds, Emma Stone, Catherine Keener, Cloris Leachman. USA 2013. 99 mins.

This beautifully realised cartoon feature, co-directed by top Hollywood animation filmmakers De Micco (SPACE CHIMPS) and Sanders (HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON), follows the world’s first prehistoric family. Voiced by Cage, Stone, Keener, Clark Duke and the wonderful Leachman as Gran, the family are forced to abandon the cave that has long been their haven. They enter a new and often frightening world in search of a safer environment, and are eventually led to a magical new land by a quick-witted teenager (Reynolds). Originating as it does from DreamWorks, this is more than just kids’ entertainment: its underlying messages won’t be lost on environmentalists, or on those who cherish meaningful family values.

Director: Derek Cianfrance. Starring: Ryan Gosling, Eva Mendes, Bradley Cooper. USA 2012. 141 mins.

Reunited with BLUE VALENTINE director Cianfrance, Gosling plays Luke, an itinerant fairground stunt-rider. After some breathtaking footage of him at work, we see Luke quit his perilous profession and settle down to provide for the son he’s fathered during a brief encounter with a waitress (Mendes). Trouble is, that means robbing banks. Enter Cooper as Avery, a rookie cop with problems of his own, who dramatically nails Luke, challenging a corrupt colleague in the process (Ray Liotta at his nastiest). A decade later, the consequences of Luke and Avery’s actions shift the proceedings into a whole new gear. The structure and cinematography of Cianfrance’s hard-hitting film – and especially Gosling’s performance – edge it towards greatness.

THÉRÈSE DESQUEYROUX (12A)

Director: Claude Miller. Starring: Audrey Tautou, Gilles Lellouche, Anaïs Demoustier. France 2012. 110 mins. French with English subtitles.

Thérèse (Tautou, AMÉLIE) and Bernard (Lellouche, MESRINE: KILLER INSTINCT) enter a marriage of political and financial convenience in 1920s France. But Thérèse finds herself increasingly at odds with her boorish husband, and when she finally takes action, the consequences are tragic. Completed just before his death, Miller’s (THE ACCOMPANIST) interpretation of François Mauriac’s novel is an elegant, subtle drama. Contains moderate sex.

THE EYE OF THE STORM (15)

Director: Fred Schepisi. Starring: Charlotte Rampling, Geoffrey Rush, Judy Davis. Australia 2011. 119 mins.

The complexities of Australian Nobel Prize winner Patrick White’s novel are a challenge that veteran director Schepisi (ROXANNE, LAST ORDERS) rises to magnificently with this lushly filmed tale of family regret and greed. Rampling is Elizabeth Hunter, the rich, ailing matriarch whose adult children, Basil and Dorothy (Rush and Davis), have returned home to secure what they regard as their rightful inheritances. But although largely confined to her deathbed, Elizabeth is wise to their intentions and plays a long, manipulative game. Timely flashbacks illuminate their motivations, and all three wonderful actors imbue the web of strangely hollow deceit with considerable subtlety. Schepisi’s daughter Alexandra is also excellent as the nurse whom Basil’s roving libido inevitably draws into the familial stew. An absorbing, complex, masterfully executed work.

THE GREaT GaTSBY (12A)

Director: Baz Luhrmann. Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, Joel Edgerton. Australia/USA 2013. 143 mins.

For this new adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s bittersweet novel set during New York’s gaudy jazz era, director Luhrmann (ROMEO + JULIET, MOULIN ROUGE!) has considerably upped the ante. Arguably eclipsing Robert Redford’s portrayal in the 1974 version, Leonardo DiCaprio as the maverick millionaire Jay Gatsby was an inspired casting move. Add to that Mulligan (DRIVE) as Daisy, Gatsby’s sexy if unobtainable love interest, Edgerton (ZERO DARK THIRTY) as her philandering husband, and Maguire (SPIDER-MAN) as Nick Carraway, the impressionable hick-from-the-sticks writer who witnesses the unravelling of a precarious status quo, and you have an epic parable of excess and its consequences. Contains moderate sex, voilence and bloody images.

I’M SO EXCITED! (15)

Director: Pedro Almodóvar. Starring: Cecilia Roth, Javier Cámara, Pepa Charro. Spain 2013. 90 mins. Spanish with English subtitles.

Featuring cameos from Antonio Banderas and Penélope Cruz, I’M SO EXCITED! sees Almodóvar return to his crazy comedy roots. A group of travellers face a life-threatening situation on board a plane to Mexico City and, trapped in a confined space, they let off steam, attempt to seduce and be seduced, lie to themselves and each other, and battle with fear, loneliness and the prospect of death. The result is one of Almodóvar’s most ambitious comedies yet, and confirms his status as the most daring and original voice in contemporary cinema.

7 – 11 JUNE MUD (12A)

Director: Jeff Nichols. Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Tye Sheridan, Jacob Lofland. USA 2012. 130 mins.

In this follow-up to the much-acclaimed TAKE SHELTER, director Nichols pays homage to great American novels and films such as Huckleberry Finn, STAND BY ME and BADLANDS. The premise is straightforward: on an island there is a boat, and in that boat there lives a man called Mud (McConaughey), whose past is as murky as the vast Mississippi that swirls around him. When 14-year-old Ellis (Sheridan) and Neckbone (Lofland) venture across the river, the trio’s surprise encounter drags them all into a world of bounty hunters, unrequited love, and those strange, magical moments that transform boys into men. Littered with broken characters and casual violence, Nichols’ story plays out like a Johnny Cash song and reminds us that, no matter how just the cause, life is nothing more than a constant struggle upstream. Contains moderate violence and sex references.

THE GaTEKEEPERS (15)

Director: Dror Moreh. Israel 2012. 101 mins. English and Hebrew with English subtitles.

This fascinating and moving film opens a window onto 50 years of Israeli history as seen through the eyes of the Shin Bet, the state’s security agency, whose activities and membership have hitherto remained shrouded in mystery and secrecy. Constructed around intimate and revealing interviews with six surviving former heads of the agency, blended with archival footage and computer-generated dramatic reconstructions, THE GATEKEEPERS explores key moments in Israel’s history. From the Six-Day War right up until the present day, the film reflects on the Shin Bet’s role in the development of the state and its responses to the ongoing conflict in the region.
