The library staff serves about 1300 students and is located in the heart of Charlotte, NC

More Library History

The first campus library was housed in a large room on the first floor of Biddle Hall, the University’s first administrative building. The library contained 2,500 books, some newspapers and some magazines donated by scholarly ministers.

The Carnegie Library was built in 1911 at a cost of $15,000 and continued to improve with more renovations in 1955.

What are your major responsibilities?

Organize and prepare the content of the library’s web site to be published in accordance with the University’s web development policy.

Develop online instructional materials to be used in the information literacy program/instruction.

Assess compliance of information literacy program in accordance with ACRL standards.

Serve on the institutional Web Development, and Library Technology committees.

Plan and supervise the implementation of digitization projects in cooperation with library and archives staff.

Prepare and maintain records/statistics relative to use of online materials.

Serve as a liaison to the Computer Science, Engineering, and Physics departments to enhance collection development efforts, interdepartmental cooperation and the promotion of library services.

What are other responsibilities working as Systems Librarian/Library Webmaster?

Provide one-on-one reference services 10-12 hours per week.

Part of the weekend rotation of librarians throughout the semester.

Responsible for overseeing library inventory.

What technology software are you responsible for maintaining and what software do you utilize for

statistics and report writing?

I am responsible for maintaining Millennium Integrated Library System and organization and upkeep of the Library’s website.

I utilize Google Analytics, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Word for report writing.

What are some of your greatest technology accomplishments in your

current position?

Added over 25,000 e-books and videos to the libraries collection via the online catalog.

Provided off campus access to all databases via EzProxy for user authenification.

Worked with Instructional Services Librarian to develop the library’s mobile library site.

In 2009 the staff launched Digital Smith, which allows users to browse the database to learn about the history of the university. Digital Smith is loaded with photographs and primary resources. Andrea talked about JBDML digitalized their famous Mural that is located on the first floor of library. The Mural allows one to take a stroll down memory lane.

Ms Hylton talked a great deal about JBDML’s initiative push for Web 2.0 mobile access and YouTube information systems. Ms. Hylton worked closely with our Instructional Technology Librarian to explore new ways for students to access information. The staff used Google and Flicker, Mashups, which allowed students to use Web 2.0 social media tools to bring together information. Another great technology edition was creating a JCSU mobile library. The mobile library gives students access to the catalog, databases, and scholarly materials.

How are decisions regarding the implementation of new technology made?

All suggestions are given to the director. She decides and completes the purchase. IT Department is then consulted if the implementation requires their assistance. I usually plan and install technology not requiring IT. If wiring, bolting, electrical, etc. is/are required the university’s facilities department or an outside vendor perform these tasks.

Final Thoughts Conclusion

What are the most common mistakes you notice in the field?

I see too many people that don’t want to dig in a manual and figure things out for themselves. In most cases, anything involving technology is an iterative process, and you can’t be afraid to break something along the way to a solution.

What advice would you give to current MLIS students regarding Technology?

Take as many technology classes as possible. So many people old and new in this profession are afraid of technology, but it’s essential to an information professional, and that’s what librarians are. You must embrace technology or you will be left behind. Just dig your heels in, get a book or manual, and teach yourself.
