n the evening of August 22, under the lights of the newly constructed outdoor Johnson Arena at the Kentucky Horse Park, it was evident that the

International Hunter Derby Series was set to propel hunters into a whole new level of competition. Twenty-five of the best derby horses in the nation wowed the crowd with their style and athletic ability. The art of horsemanship and bril-liance displayed solidified the fact that the hunter division is on the cusp of change.

John French and Mountain Home Stables’ Rumba went down in history as the inaugural winners of the milestone event, traveling all the way from California to capture the prestigious title of USHJA International Hunter Derby Finals Champion and claiming their share of the $100,000 in prize money.

Infusing Past and FutureFor more than a decade, horsemen have been lamenting the fact that the hunter division has become passé and in need of a facelift. The discipline had become too artificial with courses that featured the same inside line to outside line. Two years ago, a group of horsemen led by George Morris met to brainstorm ways to revitalize the division. George shared with the group his ideas for a new type of hunter division that he

Dream Ride

J ohn French took notice of Rumba the first time he saw the gray gelding. “Erin Duffy showed him last year and I always liked him,” he said. When John

learned Rumba was for sale in December 2008, he convinced his clients, the Siebel family, to look at him.

“We were in sync right from the beginning,” John explained. “When we tried him, I jumped a few fences and I knew that he would be a good horse for my cli-ent as well.”

Stacey Siebel, owner of Mountain Home Stables in Woodside, California, said that her family fell in love with the horse and decided to purchase him for her 16-year-old daughter Taylor, who rides in the junior hunter and jumper divisions.

“The match between Rumba and Taylor was apparent immediately. He is an exceptional horse with talent, beauty and a lot of personality. Taylor is a beautiful rider and the two go together perfectly,” Stacey said.

Taylor says that the classy gray is a dream to ride and she fell in love with him the minute she saw him. “He has an amazing jump and canter,” she said.

Rumba didn’t waste any time earning both John and Taylor circuit titles on the HITS Desert Circuit and two derby victories as well. “I wasn’t sure how he’d be under the lights with the natural jumps, but he was great,” John said of Rumba’s first derby experience.

Rumba continued to show lightly throughout the summer with Taylor in the small-junior division and John in the second-year-green division. The Danish-bred Rumba won the $10,000 Grand Hunter Challenge at Menlo Park and was the show’s second-year-green champion late in the summer.

The decision to enter him in the derby finals was not an easy one for the Sieb-el family. “I wasn’t sure about bringing him all the way to Kentucky for the class because he also has indoor shows coming up in three to four weeks,” John said. The San Juan Bautista, California-based trainer was concerned about the wear and tear on the horse from shipping him back and forth. “But the Siebels thought it was a great opportunity and they believe in me, so we made a plan to work it out. After the finals, we sent him to the East Coast and he’ll get a few weeks off to relax before showing on the indoor circuit,” John explained.

referred to as High Performance Hunters. The group promptly formed the High Performance Hunter Committee and created the Interna-tional Hunter Derby Series.

The committee, initially led by Geoff Teall before turning the reins over to Ron Danta of South Carolina, saw the derby series as a way of returning to the style and substance of old hunter courses and back to a time when fences were natural and horsemen were defined by their ability. “By thinking with open minds, we’re entering the future while honoring the past,” Ron said during the opening ceremonies at the derby finals.

Longtime horsewoman and presenting sponsor of the series, Shawna Dietrich of Dietrich Insurance, agreed with Ron and was pleased with the excitement surrounding the finals. “I believe everyone involved, from the organizers, owners, riders, trainers, sponsors and spectators, all had a fabulous two days of thrilling competition. This derby series has truly added an undeniable spark to showing hunters in this country,” she said.

What started as a concept to shoot life back into the hunters has turned into a full-fledged derby frenzy. During the finals competition, hundreds of enthusiasts filled the outdoor stadium. More than 30,000 viewers watched the live feed on www.Eques-trianLife.com as the top hunters and riders competed.

“The derby is changing the way that people look at hunters and changing the way that those within the sport are looking for-ward into the future,” Ron said. “It’s astound-ing the amount of excitement this class has generated for the hunters.”

The Best of the Best Leading up to the finals, 45 classes were held from December 2007 to June 2009. Based on prize money won throughout the 2008/2009 series, the top 75 horses in the nation were invited to the inaugural event. SBS Farms’ Jersey Boy led the field with 25,790 points and was followed by Roger Smith’s Castello and Bright Star 158 LLC’s Rock Star, who were tied with 18,500.

Held in the Kentucky Horse Park’s new outdoor stadium, the Derby Finals started at

Series champion Jersey Boy proved he has just as much star power as the “Jersey boys” of Broadway fame.

D uring the Derby Finals festivities, Jersey Boy and his team were recognized as

the 2008/2009 series champion for the most money won. Ridden by Jennifer

Alfano and trained by the Susie Schoellkopf-led SBS Farms in Buffalo, New York, the

chestnut gelding competed in nine derbies and won three. He led the victory gallop at

the 2008 and 2009 $10,000 derby in Ocala and the 2009 $50,000 derby at the Winter

Equestrian Festival.

For his accomplishment, Jennifer and Susie accepted the George H. Morris Hunter

Derby trophy. The trophy, donated by Diane Carney, depicts a hunter jumping over a

split rail with hounds. Jersey Boy’s grooms, Erin McMurray and Emily Schaffer, were

also presented with a $250 check. “It’s a great series and Ron Danta and Bill Moroney

should be commended for starting it,” Susie said. “It was exciting for us when he won

at Palm Beach and at Ocala. He’s been a really consistent horse and we’re definitely

going to keep him for the derbies.”

Susie and Jennifer purchased the 7-year-old gelding two years ago as a pre-green

horse. Susie liked his form over fences and thought he’d make a great addition to the

barn. Named after the Broadway play, the Hanoverian gelding has found his niche in

the derbies. “These classes require a special kind of horse. You have to have a horse

with style and scope to be competitive. Each course is a new challenge,” Susie said.

Continuing on into the 2009/2010 series, Jersey Boy already has two wins to his

credit and looks poised for another great season.

7:30 a.m. on August 21 with a qualifying round in which the top 25 were invited back with a clean slate for the classic round the following afternoon. From there, the top 12 returned for a handy round later that night with the two scores combined for overall placings.

The qualifying round featured a clas-sic hunter course and included three option jumps. Course designers Patrick Rodes and Bobby Murphy designed all three courses for the finals and incorpo-rated plenty of wide-open space into the qualifying round.

Early in the draw, Courtney Calcag-nini of Pilot Point, Texas, and Curtain Call set the score to beat at 345. That score stood at the top of the leader board until John rode Mountain Home Stables’ Rumba into the arena. The 9-year-old gray gelding put in a stylish performance to top the class at 367.

John, Rumba’s rider and trainer, said the gelding handled the qualifying course well. “I thought all the courses throughout the week were great. They really flowed and included long gallop-ing lines,” he said. “There was one bend-ing line in the qualifying round that I hoped he would land left, and he did. If he would have landed on his right lead, it might have been a little hard, but luck-ily he didn’t.”

Though several of the series’ top-ranked horses entered the ring after Rumba, including series leader Jersey Boy, the gray gelding held onto the top spot. “He is very adjustable and is happy to have courses that ask more of his scope, range and handiness,” John said of his mount. “He has a rhythmical canter, which makes it easy to find the jumps and distances.”

At the end of the round, five points separated Rumba from second-place horse Early Applause, ridden by Maggie Jayne. Junior rider Jessica Springsteen and Tiziano sat in third place with 357 points.

After the qualifying class, the rid-ers of the top 25 horses drew for the

next day’s order of go. Peter Pletcher and Maggie each had multiple mounts qualified for the classic course and were permitted to draw first. The remaining riders drew in the order in which they’d finished in the first round. Castello and Jack Hardin Towell were the first to ride the classic course.

An Unprecedented PerformanceThough each of the 25 horses would en-ter the next day’s competition with clean slates, it was obvious that the West Coast team of John and Rumba would be tough to beat. Four panels of judges presided over Saturday evening’s rounds, including George Morris, Danny Robertshaw, John Roper, Jimmy Torano, Linda Hough, Jim Clapperton, Julie Winkel and Ralph Car-isto. Each panel could award an additional 10 points for brilliance during each round.

Jennifer Alfano and Jersey Boy were the seventh horse and rider to enter the outdoor stadium’s classic course and made easy work of the 4-foot options, including the looming log fence. Jennifer galloped the chestnut gelding to the last fence, the USHJA signature oxer, and set the top score of the class at 381.

John entered the ring six horses

later and piloted Rumba across a daring course. “At the beginning of the course, there was a bending line to fence number two. I saw some riders jump fence num-ber one and their horse landed on the left lead. They tried to stay on the left, but the horse ended up cross cantering and trying to change. Normally, Rumba prefers the left lead and I knew that if we tried to change leads in that line that it would be a mess,” John explained. “So in the warm-up area, I tried to get him to simulate jumping and then turning after fence number one. But he really didn’t want to land on his right lead. So I thought, ‘OK, we can practice holding the left lead and hope we get lucky.’”

But John’s worrying was for naught – the gray gelding jumped the first fence and landed on his right lead. “He did it for me and it worked out,” John said. “That was what I was mostly worried about. After that, I was like, ‘OK, now we got it.’”

At fences five and six, he opted to take the safer 3’6” coop option and then crossed over to the 4-foot fence at the end of the line. The performance earned them 400 points out of a total 440. “He just went great and I knew the score was going to be high because the crowd just went crazy for him,” John said. “I loved

the course; it was a big, long, flowing course with lots of room to gallop and show off his stride.”

Tammy Provost on Stephen Martines’ Peridot came the closest to catching Rumba with a score of 390. Though Tammy played the first part of the course safe by jumping the 3’6” coop options, she finished the rest of the course by opt-ing for the 4-foot jumps and galloping to the last fence. Her effort was rewarded with extra bonus points, including a per-fect 10 from one set of judges.

Heading into the final round handy course, Rumba stood at the top of the field, followed closely by Peridot and Jersey Boy.

A Part of History The handy round gave riders a chance to show off their mounts with plenty of options for tight turns, angled ap-proaches and a walk-to-canter transition

on course. The bolder riders cut through a trellis en route to fence eight. Some gambles backfired with rails rolling out of the cups and a few horses digging in their heels when ambitious riders at-tempted tougher options over the chal-lenging course.

Tammy and Peridot were strong con-tenders for the title coming into the handy round, but an unfortunate stop at fence five took them out of top contention as they dropped from second to tenth.

Though spectacular performances filled the night, Jennifer and Jersey Boy’s no-holds-barred trip took the pair straight to the top of the class.

“We were thrilled with his perfor-mance,” trainer Susie said of Jersey Boy’s handy round. With Jen’s other derby horses out of contention, Susie said that it was all up to Jersey Boy to pull it off. “And he certainly stepped up for her,” she said.

Sitting 19 points behind Rumba at the start of the handy round, Jennifer knew that Jersey Boy had to lay it all on the line in order to win the class. The chestnut gelding owned by SBS Farms didn’t disappoint, starting the course at a strong canter, taking the higher fence op-tions and galloping the last fence. Their effort earned scores in the 90s and the highest set of bonus points, making them the team to beat with just two to go.

Peridot’s refusal at fence five left it up to Rumba to maintain his lead over Jersey Boy. After Jennifer’s round on the talented gelding, John knew he’d have to put in a solid trip to secure the win. When they entered the ring, all eyes were on the gray gelding and rider from California. While the atmosphere surrounding the course set many of the tenser horses on edge, Rumba barely bat-ted an eye as he galloped around.

“I had a bit of a lead so I just didn’t want to make a mistake. I wanted to be safe but I knew I had to stay ahead and stay true to the handy round,” John said. “When bonus points are involved, it changes everything.”

John entered the handy course wanting to show off Rumba’s beautiful movement and classic jumping form. “I really wasn’t thinking about scores when I went into the ring,” John said. “I just wanted to put in the best performance.”

“You could hear a pin drop around the whole course and then at the second to last fence, everyone started whistling and cheering,” John said. “I was like, ‘Oh Rumba, don’t listen to them!’” But the classy gray kept his composure and jumped the last fence in perfect style.

“After that last fence, I couldn’t be-lieve it was over. I just thought to myself, ‘It’s done and nothing bad happened.’ I was in a daze for a minute,” John said.

Tension was thick in the arena as the judges’ scores came in. Had Rumba’s per-formance been enough to hold his lead on Jersey Boy? Or had the series cham-pion pulled off the upset?

Though Jersey Boy won the handy round by 13 points, it wasn’t enough to push him past Rumba. By a mere six points, Rumba’s performance, which

earned scores in the 90s from the judges, was enough to clinch the prestigious title.

“This is going to be one win I’ll never forget just for the simple fact that it was the first of its kind,” said John. “This class has really helped to bring some spark and interest back to the hunters.”

Thanks to the generous support of sponsors, the USHJA was able to award $100,000 in prize money along with additional prizes to the top 25 finishers. Each of the horses that qualified for Saturday evening’s classic round received $1,000, leaving $75,000 to be split

among the top 12 horses in the handy round.

As champion of the class, Rumba’s owner, Mountain Home Stables, received a custom-built bit box courtesy of McGuinn Farms and, as the trainer, John was given a personalized suitcase. The gray gelding’s grooms were also recog-nized with a monetary award for their work.

“I think the derby is going to become a permanent fixture in the hunters and bring them back to how it used to be. And Rumba was the first to do it,” John said with obvious pride in his voice.

HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES HUNTER JUMPER ASSOCIATION

USHJA was conceived at a breakfast meeting during the July 2003 USEF Board of Directors meeting in Lexington, KY. At

this meeting, a small group agreed that it was the right time to form an organization that would represent all levels of

hunter and jumper participants under the umbrella of USEF. Steering and Advisory committees were created to help in the

formation of this organization.

The Steering Committee met in Newark, NJ on November 3 – 4, 2003 to formalize the development of a national

organization to represent the interests of the hunter and jumper community. Steering Committee members present were

Louise Serio, Geoff Teall, Louise Otten, Chrystine Tauber, Archie Cox, Beth Miner, Tracey Weinberg, Bill Turner, Mindy

Darst, Debbie Bass, Jeff Wirthman, Judy Richter, Wilson Dennehy, Marianne Kutner (Legal Counsel), Bill Moroney, Sue

Pinckney (USEF Liaison), Michele Perla (AHJF Liaison), and Kathy Meyer, Event Facilitator.

In spending two days together, Kathy guided this group through the development of the organizational structure,

objectives list, and strategic plan for execution of these objectives. A mission statement was also refined to read as

follows:

The mission of the USHJA is to unify and represent the interests of all levels of participants in order to promote and

enhance the hunter/jumper discipline and provide educational experiences in a manner that will benefit both horses and

members.

Included in the mission statement are some of the key reasons for formation of this organization:

1. To keep the hunters and jumpers together on a national level.

2. To better educate all levels of hunter/jumper participants.

3. To benefit the welfare of the horses.

4. To represent all levels of hunter/jumper participants and give these participants a voice in their governance.

5. To promote inclusion of participants from all levels in the organization.

6. To help govern the hunter/jumper discipline through a more cohesive and efficient rule change process.

During 2004, information about the USHJA was distributed through the efforts of the Steering Committee members and

horse shows that offered to have the USHJA membership brochure available to their exhibitors. Hundreds of committed

individuals supported the development of the USHJA by joining as Founding Life Members.
