Before and After School Supervision

Parents, as the nice weather approaches we would like to remind you that there is no adult supervision on the playground until 8:00 a.m. We are concerned that students could be hurt on the playground or get into trouble without adult support. Also, after 2:45 dismissal, I would ask that if you are staying with your child(ren) after school that you keep them under extremely close supervision. You assume the responsibility for your children once you have picked them up after school. Please remember that if you choose to allow your children to play after school unsupervised on the playground, the school has no supervisors outside at this time and parents must beware that they must take the responsibility for their children during this time period.

Elementary School Front Door Security

Please remember to send your child prepared for the day. This will help minimize the traffic

in the bus loop as well the school.

Please leave the clearly labelled items on the table outside of the office. Students may pick up forgotten items during recess or lunch breaks. Parents are still responsible for coming into the building to sign out your child/ren for any appointments taking place during the school day. Any efforts to make appointments outside of school hours will be appre-

ciated. Also, a reminder that all visitors/volunteers to the school must sign in at the office. Thank you.

Family Fitness Night - Save the Date!

Family Fitness Night is on June 7, 2017. This includes our annual road hockey challenge! 5:00 -7:00pm! Stay tuned, more details to follow!

Volunteer Appreciation

We would like to thank all our parents and community members who volunteered so much of

their time during this past year. Our students have clearly benefited from your contribu-

tions to their academic life. The staff and students recognized and thanked our volunteers

at the GNA on April 28th . It is always inspiring to see how people will give of themselves in so many

ways, for the benefit of their children. Thank you once again for taking the time to help!

Triple P Tip of the Month ~ MAY ~ Lying

Parents may find it hard to believe their children when they often tell lies. Telling lies can also cause problems with friends and other family members. Children need to learn that no matter what they have done, they must tell the truth. It is best to deal with lying as soon as it starts. KEY STEPS:

Discuss with your child what lying is and why it is a problem Tell your child they must stop telling lies Talk about consequences for telling lies Setup opportunities for your child to tell the truth Praise your child for telling the truth, act immediately Apply consequences for lying and any other problem behavior Don’t forget to check out the new Triple P Ontario website for online resources and podcasts for parents of

children from birth to teens. www.triplepontario.ca

Newmarket Cares for Kids

Student Busing Eligibility

Did you know that students’ busing eligibility changes throughout their school career? Your son/daughter’s eligibility to ride the school bus may change according to their grade and distance from home to school. Below are the provisions for

eligibility identified in the Board’s Transportation Policy #680:

All YRDSB students in Grades JK-3 who live within 1.2 km of their school are not eligible for transportation

All YRDSB students in Grades 4-8 who live within 1.6 km of their school are not eligible for transportation

All YRDSB students in Grades 9-12 who live within a transit served area are not eligible for transportation.

To view Board Policy #680 Student Transportation, please visit www.yrdsb.edu.on.ca. For more information about bus

transportation and to determine your son/daughter’s eligibility please visit www.schoolbuscity.com.

PEANUT AND NUT BAN

Numerous students attending our school have life threatening allergies and will experience anaphylactic shock if they are exposed to even a tiny amount of peanut oil, peanuts or nut products. Therefore, Rogers PS MUST be a PEANUT AND NUT-FREE ZONE. What this means is that no peanut or peanut products of any kind may be brought into the school. Thank you.

Literacy Tip The ability to tell a story is one type of communication that we use daily when interacting with

one another. To help children develop good storytelling skills, it is important to understand the rules of stories. All stories have:

a beginning (who is in the story; where and when does the story take place) a middle (actions are explained in order of occurrence - first what happened, and then what happened)

an end (explaining how the story finished). Here are some activities you can use at home, to help your child develop storytelling skills. Tell

short stories about single pictures. Show the child a picture and create a short story using the story frame above. Tell “stories” about your day. Encourage your child to retell a story you told first. Give clues to help with the order of the story. Start the child with the first event, then

ask, “And then what happened?” Use play to encourage storytelling. If you and your child are playing with toys such as a farmer, a barn, and several farm animals, you could act out and

tell a story. Use books without words to encourage your child to tell stories. Consider community resources and events that are fun and can reinforce your efforts. Such as, storytelling events at libraries

and bookstores puppet shows, or children's theatre productions. By using these ideas and a little practice, you will help your child understand and use the rules

of storytelling.

Spring Cleaning? Look out for Rogers’ Treasures

Over the last number of years we have lost a number of important and costly items from Rogers. Today the simple math textbooks that our students use cost in excess of $50.00 per book. Please do a small search at home to see if any of our textbooks, team sweaters or other possessions of the school have taken up residence under your beds, in closets, the garage etc. Could you please have your child return them to school as soon as possible. This will help save money for the school due to the high cost of replacement. Possible Items may be: A) Library Books B) Research Books from classrooms or the library C) Track and Field School Shirts D) Basketball School Shirts E) Musical Instruments F) Classroom textbooks G) Novels H) Sports Equipment

Wheels …

If your child is going to ride a bike to

school, please note the following:

Have students walk their bike on

and off the school property.

Students are not to ride bikes around the prop-

erty before school or directly after school for

approximately one half-hour.

Retain a description of the bike

and the serial number at home.

Students are encouraged to wear

a safety helmet.

Remember to lock your bikes.

Bikes are to be placed in the bike racks.

Skateboards and Roller Blades:

Please refrain from allowing your child to bring

these items to school as this presents a safety haz-

ard. These are expensive items and we cannot be

responsible if they are lost, stolen or damaged

while on school property. They also represent a

storage problem in the classroom.

Basket Fundraiser Just a reminder that Rogers School Council is once again running their Annual Spring Basket Fundraiser again this year. We appreciate donations from our families who are welcome to support their favourite theme when choosing an item to donate. If it’s more convenient for you, School Council is happy to accept cash and/or gift card donations towards the basket theme of your choice and they will purchase an item for you. Students were asked to bring in an item for a themed basket. The baskets will be assembled by School Council and a ‘buy your basket tickets’ order form has already been sent home with students for a chance to win an awesome basket! Thank you for your support!

Make wise food choices in the supermarket!

Making healthy food choices recently got easier! In 2005, Health Canada mandated manufacturers to put food labels on most pre-packaged products. These labels have a standard format and list specific nutrients, making it easier for consumers to compare prod-ucts. Here are the three parts of the label: Nutrition Facts Table lists the serving size, calories and amount of 13 nutrients in the product. The “% Daily Value” on the right hand side of the table indicates the amount of a nutrient in one serving of the product. List of Ingredients lists ingredients in the product Nutrition Claims are either Nutrient Content Claims such as “low in fat” or Health Claims, which tells you how a specific nutri-ent in the product affects your health. Check out the Interactive Nutrition Label and Quiz on Health Canada’s Web site and/or visit http://www.healthyeatingisinstore.ca/ to help better understand and learn how-to use nutrition information on labels.

It’s time to remind children about being safe in our community

This is a good time for parents to learn about and review ways to protect their children from potential dangers. Here's what children need to know:

Their name, age, telephone number, address, city and province. This can be done through rhyme or

song.

How to contact their parents at any time, by memorizing cell or work numbers.

How and under what circumstances to call 911.

To never approach or enter a stranger's vehicle. A responsible adult would never ask a child for

directions or any other question for that matter.

Make sure they know they have a right to say "no" to an adult, especially when the adult is asking

them to do something they have been taught is wrong or feels uncomfortable. Reminding children of this right is important because children are taught from a young age to respect adults.

To always tell parents where they will be and to never enter someone's home without their parent's permission.

If home alone, never admit it when answering the phone. Never answer a knock at the door or speak

through it. Adults can be very persuasive. Teach your child to call you if there is a knock at the door and if they fear for their safety, teach them to call 911. Make sure they know that police officers are there to help them and would not get mad if it were a false alarm.

If they think they are being followed or are in danger they should run home or to a public place. If

someone grabs them, they should try to get away, yelling and screaming while doing so. It is important to play in safe areas, never take shortcuts and stick with a buddy whenever possible. It is never too early or too late to teach children the importance of personal safety. Common sense, communication and consistency are the keys. Remind children to alert a responsible adult if something strange happens that makes them feel uncomfortable. Remember, crime prevention is everyone's responsibility. For more information on this subject, contact the York Regional Police Community Services Bureau at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7980, or by e-mail at [email protected], or visit www.yrp.ca.

A message from Me to We …

It is a busy time of year for the Me to We Club! On April 21st, many students participated in We Are Silent, an annual campaign where we silence our voices in support of people, particularly children, all over the world who do not have a

voice due to war, poverty, discrimination, bullying, or any other reason. It is a day where we stop and really appreciate the freedom and opportunities that we enjoy here. National Volunteer Week was April 24-28th and we encouraged

students to get involved, here at school, home and in the community. Me to We will be at the Community Garage Sale

on May 6th, stop by and see what we are doing!

Basketball The basketball season at Rogers has been a busy and successful one, wrapping up with the Junior Area tournaments at the end of April. Well done to the Junior boys who are the Area Champions! Congratulations to all the players, coaches

and supporters of our Junior and Intermediate teams! It has been a fantastic season of hard work, dedication and ex-citing games.

Public Health Immunization

In the 2017/18 school year, York Region Public Health will visit all elementary schools to provide school immunization clinics to Grade 7 students. The clinics offer vaccines for Hepatitis B, Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and Meningococcal A, C, Y, W-135 at no cost. Under the Immunization of School Pupils Act, meningococcal vaccine is required for school attendance, unless an exemption is filed with public health. Hepatitis B and HPV vaccines are recommended, but not required for school attendance. Parents of students entering Grade 7 in fall 2017 will receive consent forms in the mail in June. Please complete the consent form and return it to York Region Public Health to allow your child to participate in the immunization clinics. Detailed instructions can be found on the forms and accompanying letter. If the consent form is not completed, your child will not be able to receive vaccines at the clinic. Parents and guardians who do not consent should still complete the forms and return them, indicating that you do not authorize York Region Public Health to immunize your child. Visit york.ca/immunizations and click on School Immunization Clinics for more information. Did you know? If your child has missed a required vaccination on Ontario’s routine immunization schedule, he/she can receive the vaccine at one of York Region Public Health’s Community Immunization Clinics. These evening clinics are offered throughout the summer, giving students the opportunity to catch up before returning to school. Visit york.ca/immunizations and select Community Immunization Clinics to learn more.

Want to advertise your business in the yearbook?

Rogers PS is offering local businesses an opportunity to advertise in our yearbook with a sponsor ad. A sponsor ad is an inexpensive and effective way to promote your business to the Rogers community! In addition, sponsor ads help to offset the cost of producing the yearbook, which means students pay an affordable price, year after year! Business card ads cost $25, medium ads cost $50 and half-page ads cost $100. To place an ad or if you have further questions, please contact Liza Mallyon, Volunteer Yearbook Coordinator at [email protected]

Class Placement for 2017-18 Parental Input Reminder

Parent input that is received in writing by the office prior to May 1st, will be considered (and shared) during placement meetings. Please avoid naming a teacher as staffing can vary. Input after May 1st will not be considered due to the complexity of the task. Please be advised that while such input is valued, it cannot drive class placement decisions since school-wide limitations and a variety of other factors will, at times, take precedence. Final decisions regarding student placements remain the responsibility of the Principal and the school staff. Ministry mandates on class size will impact class placements into September. As a result, we will, regretfully, be unable to share class placement information with families until school opening. Thank you for partnering with us in this very important task.

The Welcome to Kindergarten program (WTK) offer resources and strategies for families in support of children and early learning. Our school will be hosting our WTK Family Orientation session on May 17, 2017. Learning to Play and Playing to Learn: Getting Ready for School is a wonderful booklet for families in helping their child prepare for a successful transition to kindergarten. We look forward to seeing you on May 17, 2017.
