August 2019 Issue
The Life of the Believer & Kingdom Work at CTL In our summer worship, we’ve been considering God’s Word to us in the Old Testa-
ment lessons. We’ve heard again the stories of Jonah and Joshua and Elijah. And
with them we’ve been thinking about the life of the believer. As we move into Au-
gust, we continue in that theme. We’re concluding our summer worship with this
thought: the believer follows Christ. We’ll explore our love for neighbor, listening
to God, praying boldly, understanding the meaninglessness of earth’s riches, and
trusting in God’s promises.
In the month of August, of course, we’ll also be nearing the start of the school year
again. As we’ve mentioned before, we’re blessed at CTL to have received a new
principal, Mr. Ben Schramm, and his family. We’re also blessed with a new pre-
school teacher, Mrs. Kimmi Gerlach, and her family. We will installing our new
principal and preschool teacher into our CTL ministry on August 11 in both
services. On that day, we will also share fellowship in a cake reception be-
tween services.
Please join us on that date and throughout our summer worship season. God bless
us as we work in his kingdom!

Sanctuary/Narthex Project Update
Thank you for your ongoing gifts to the Faith-
Family-Future (FFF) capital campaign that will
provide the cash component of this project. As
reported in the June newsletter article the church
council and other leaders continue to work on
issues related to the project timing and financing.
One of the more significant recent developments
has to do with our plan to start construction in
early 2022. An important component of being
able to do this is meeting various City of
Brookfield requirements. In late June we met
with city staff to update them on our project
status and anticipated schedule. We also
discussed parking requirements, impervious
area/greenspace issues and general zoning and
code enforcement issues. At the conclusion of
the meeting we left believing that we are in solid
position to attain City zoning approval based on
our ownership of 2 properties and our option on
the Kimball property, and that this should allow
us to proceed with construction in spring 2022.
We will need to do more code review and be able
to justify our proposed parking plan, but based
on the discussion the path forward looks positive
in terms of coordination with the city.
Project financing is also coming more into focus.
FFF will provide $2.2M based on current pledges.
We are recommending borrowing a maximum of
$3M even though potential lenders have
indicated we can borrow more. We propose
limiting our new annual mortgage payments to a
range of $220,000 to $240,000 per year ($18,000 to
$20,000 per month), which will mean scaling
back the project scope as outlined in the concept
plan. The Building Committee has been tasked
with reducing $500,000 of construction costs in
order to achieve this. It will also require us to
begin planning for future budget discussion and
project specific fundraising to address the
increase in debt service.
School classroom construction is part of the
master concept plan and as noted in the June
article planning for those space needs continues
to be part of the discussion even though actual
construction is anticipated to be a number of
years after completion of the Sanctuary/Narthex
Project.
We will continue to provide information as it is
developed and welcome your input on any aspect
of the project and master concept plan.
Max Schmiege,
President
CREW Update
This August CREW will be serving a Friday night dinner at one of our WELS
area Lighthouse Youth centers. If you are not familiar with this ministry,
please take a look at their website: lighthouseyouthcenter.com. This will be a
great opportunity for the teens to meet new people and it will give them a
chance to show Christian love through service. They are scheduled to serve
the meal August 9 at 5:00 pm at the Roosevelt Lighthouse location (2475 W
Roosevelt Dr. Milwaukee, WI 53209). Please speak with Pastor Free if your
teen is able to participate in this service event.

The 2019 CTL Church Picnic was a roaring success! Over 100 people attended the event at Mitchell Park Pavilion
and enjoyed scrumptious food, quality fellowship and cold root beer. Entertainment included a live band, a
caricaturist and many lawn games. Others also returned home with prizes after some great items were given away
in a raffle. Thank you to all of those who organized the event, volunteered, brought food or helped in any way.

VBS—Paul’s Dangerous Journey to Share the Gospel
Christ the Lord hosted over a hundred children between July 15th-18th for another fun-filled VBS event. The chil-
dren learned all about Paul and how, like him, they too can share the gospel about Jesus without fear. They
learned why that gospel must be shared with all people as they played games, ate snacks, and learned new songs
about God and his love. This year’s program lasted four days and ended with a closing service and special meal
donated by Chick-fil-a. May God continue to bless this ministry at CTL! A special thanks to our many volunteers
who made this year’s VBS program a success. Thanks also to those who donated to the program either with
needed supplies or in monetary way. If you want to serve as a volunteer in next year’s VBS program, please
speak with Pastor Free ([email protected]).
Adult Bible Class—Upcoming Topics
Take a look at our upcoming Adult Bible Classes. We hope you are able to join us each Sunday
from 9:15-10:15am as we dig deeper into God’s Word and grow in our knowledge of our Savior:
Human Sexuality - August 8th – September 22nd | We will begin our year looking at
God’s will and desire for human sexuality. Join us for these three weeks as we look at
the LGBTQ+ movement in our country and examine how God wants us to witness to
the society in which we live.
Isaiah – September 29th- November 17th | The book of Isaiah can be an intimidating
book. Join us for this eight-week course in which we will break down the major themes
of Isaiah so that, together, we can have a greater understanding of this difficult portion
of Scripture.
Apologetics – November 24th – December 22nd | How do we defend God’s Word
against the many attacks that come from the world around us? What role does reason
play in our understanding of God’s Word? Join us for these five weeks as we invite Pro-
fessor Mike Berg from WLC to present on apologetics and its uses in the everyday
Christian life.

We had another great year walking in

our face out in the community.
