A Deeper Look At Conversion
Examining the change that salvation makes in the life of
the believer.
What Happens at the New Birth?
3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God…Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God…The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit. John 3:3-8.
The Big Change:
Jesus prescribes a radical conversion through the new birth. The new believer in Christ should expect a monumental difference to take place in his life. He will see things differently, behave differently, and take his life in a different direction.

Elements of Change
Regeneration Adoption Sanctification Justification
Regeneration: Change in Nature
Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
Adoption: Change in Status Romans 8:15-17 For ye have not received the spirit
of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. 16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: 17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
Sanctification: Change in State
2 Thessalonians 2:13 But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:
Justification: Change in Standing
Romans 3:24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
The New Birth Crisis 1 Peter 1:7-9 That the trial of your faith, being much
more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ: Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory: Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.
At some point, your salvation will be put to
a critical test!
How will you be tested? Pressure from friends Rejection by family Rigorous demands of discipleship Strong habits that resist breaking Persecution Inner battles (depression, doubt, discouragement) Disappointment, disillusionment Satanic attack Weakness of flesh
At this point, you will ask yourself:
"What happened to my experience? What happened to my joy? What happened to my victory?"
Here is the answer:
Your new birth is not just an experience to be enjoyed, but a life to be lived!
Matthew 16:24-26 24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will
come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. 25 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. 26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
Romans 12:1-2 1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the
mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
Your self-image must change.
Independent Self-willed Proud Selfish Rebellious Temperamental Vain Condescending Critical
Your Ego:
You have to surrender your ego in order for God to develop you.
Example from Scripture
Simon Peter Saul of Tarsus
Abraham
Hebrews 11:17 By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son,
Hebrews 12:5-11 5 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you
as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: 6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. 7 If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? 8 But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. 9Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? 10 For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. 11 Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.
Our nature: (Ego, the true self), is governed by the
natural man, biased toward sin. Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ:
nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
Self-esteem:
What psychology calls self-esteem, the Bible calls sin.
Pride
1 John 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
Disobedience
Hebrews 2:2 For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward;
Rebellion 1 Samuel 15:22-23 And Samuel said, Hath the LORD
as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. 23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.
Bottom Line:
The bottom line of conversion and discipleship is the decision to live your life a different way!
Perspective: Life’s decisions must be made from the perspective of your
new identity. James 4:13-16 Go to now, ye that say, To day or to
morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that. But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.
Decisions: Career choices Major moves Marriage Major purchases Relationships Friendships Leisure activities Education Anything and everything that can affect your life
Practice submission.
Submission equals discipleship.
In the clash of wills, God must win! Isaiah 14:12-15 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer,
son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! 13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. 15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.
Be alert to self-will. 2 Tim. 2:19-21 Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth
sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity. 20 But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour. 21 If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work.
Psalm 139:23-24
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: 24 And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
