REVEREND MIKE LOUIA Senior Pastor

([email protected])

So when they had come together, they asked him, "Lord, is this the time when you will restore

the kingdom to Israel?" 7 He replied, "It is not for you to know the times or periods that the

Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has

come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to

the ends of the earth." 9 When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a

cloud took him out of their sight. 10 While he was going and they were gazing up toward heav-

en, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. 11 They said, "Men of Galilee, why do you

stand looking up toward heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven,

will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven." (Acts 1:6-11, NRSV)

The story of Jesus’ ascension is not often heard in worship because, since it occurred 40 days after

Easter and always falls on a Thursday. Ascension is a long-lost festival in the present-day church.

So, our “celebration” of Jesus’ ascension is relegated to words found in the Apostles’ and Nicene

Creeds: “he ascended into heaven.”

But the story of Jesus’ ascension is much more than a remembrance of his being taken up to heaven

after the resurrection. The dialogue between Jesus and his disciples that the story contains gives in-

struction for those disciples with Jesus, and by extension for us, about sharing the good news of res-

urrection hope in the world.

The disciples are told to start small and to focus on the area immediately around them: Jerusalem.

However, they aren’t to remain there as they are to branch out, in concentric circles that cover Judea

and Samaria, and ultimately all of God’s creation, “to the ends of the earth.”

At first, Jesus’ words sound like an impossible task. Not to worry, Jesus has it covered. He promises

that the Holy Spirit will deliver power to enable God’s people to do exactly what God intends: to share

the good news of God’s deep, bold, consequential, radical and life-changing love, revealed ultimately

in resurrection hope, for all of God’s people (no exceptions). It’s this gift of God’s Holy Spirit we recog-

nize at Pentecost, the festival we do celebrate (50 days after Easter), as well as the season of Pente-

cost that lasts until the end of the church year.

In the coming weeks, as we all go out and about in our daily lives, we’ll be given opportunities to live

into Jesus’ ascension instructions as we share the story of God’s work through Jesus in our lives with

our pew companion (in Jerusalem) with our neighbor (in Judea and Samaria) and beyond our synod

geography (to the ends of the earth). Our task is to keep our eyes focused, not on the heavens

above, but the world around us and all of God’s people who cross our paths as we live in God’s world

that has been entrusted to our care.

Thanks be to God for a Holy Spirit-filled journey ahead!

See you Sunday (or Wednesday or Saturday),

Pastor Mike

On Tuesday, May 7, at 3:45 p.m., I was told by the Synod Candidacy Committee that I was approved

to be an ordained minister of Word and Sacrament in the ELCA. I think it took about 2 seconds before

I uncontrollably wept tears of joy, and while I tried to gather myself, I let out a huge sigh of relief. I

think it's safe to say all of us here at First Lutheran have been waiting to see what's next ever since

this community, our community, opened our hearts to possibilities of me being the Associate Pastor.

And I have been so very blessed by your welcoming smiles and warm embraces. Honestly, First Lu-

theran feels like home. It's something hard to describe in words, truthfully, but sometimes that's just

how the Holy Spirit does it. She, the Holy Spirit, opens our hearts to possibilities, and we end up in

unexpected places and it just feels like home.

While I waited anxiously for the Candidacy Committee to call me in for the interview that day, I had

the opportunity to talk to our beloved Pastor Gigie who was there as the chaplain for our Synod to be

a listening ear and prayerful pastoral presence. She prayed with a fellow seminarian and me, and it

was nice to experience her beautiful gift of care that so many of you have shared about her to me. It

was a beautiful moment where I felt G-d fully affirm that G-d had brought us together, you (First Lu-

theran) and I. And for that I am grateful.

As I anticipate the next step on May 26th, which will be my ordination and installation at First Luther-

an, I also wonder what else G-d has in store for us. I anticipate some changes in our midst, and I pray

for G-d's guidance as we stay open to what those changes might mean. How is G-d showing us to

live more fully into being a community that is always welcoming, sharing, and growing in G-d's grace?

Rachel Held Evans, an author, and theologian, who recently died unexpectedly at the age of 37, once

wrote this about the Holy Spirit:

With breath, the Creator kindled the stars, parted a sea, woke a valley of dry bones, inspired a

sacred text. So, too, the Spirit, inhaled and exhaled in a million quotidian ways, animates, re-

vives, nourishes, sustains, speaks. It is as near as the nose and as everywhere as the air, so

pay attention. (Rachel Held Evans, Breath, Fire, Wind, Womb: A Reflection on the Holy Spirit)

The imagery that the Spirit is so close and so wide and expansive is so comforting to me. So, let's

take Rachel's words to heart and pay attention, together. Think of what wonders G-d can do among

and around us. I think we all paid attention when G-d brought us together. We listened and, now, here

we are, together. Doesn't that excite you to wonder who else G-d is going to bring us into relationship

with? Who else are we called to be a welcoming presence towards? Where else are we being

stretched to grow with intention? Who else are we going to share our love and abundance with? The

answer might surprise us, and it will quite possibly take us to unexpected places, but it will still feel

like home.

Peace to you,

Vicar Tamika

Lo, Jesus greets thee, risen from the tomb!

Lovingly he greets thee, scatters fear and gloom;

let his church with gladness hymn of triumph sing,

for the Lord now liveth; death hath lost its sting!

Thine is the glory, risen, conquering Son;

endless is the victory thou o’er death hast won!

Edmond Budry (ELW 376)

We can be glad that we celebrate Easter for not just one day but for a week of weeks—seven Sundays. There is

too much to ponder, to celebrate, and to SING to squeeze it all into just one day. Our hymnal Evangelical Lu-

theran Worship includes no fewer than 33 hymns in the Easter section, and there are many other hymns found

throughout the book that help us celebrate the joy and peace of the resurrection. I find it noteworthy that two of

the funerals that took place in our church during the month of May included the Easter hymn quoted above. Its

rousing tune by Handel is surely memorable, but the text that connects Jesus’ death and resurrection to our own

speaks a language that goes beyond mere words. May we all face death with such assurance!

The Bach in Baltimore concert that took place in our sanctuary on May 5, was a spectacular success when

over 100 singers from the Carroll County Children’s Chorus and the Bach in Baltimore Choir were joined by

twenty instrumentalists to present the music of contemporary British composer John Rutter. And thanks to all

FELC members who attended my organ recital on May 19, at St. John’s Episcopal Church as part of the How-

ard County Concert Orchestra season.

In May and early June our choirs will wrap up their choir season and be deployed into the pews where they will

continue to lead and inspire others with their voices. Special thanks to all singers, ringers, and instrumentalists,

and to directors Laurel Wacyk and Jenne Burnham for their loyal leadership. Even as our choirs go on sabbat-

ical, we are scheduling member and guest musicians to enrich our worship during the summer months. On Sun-

day, July 14, music will be presented by a Summer Choir; all adults and children are invited to meet in the

Choir Room at 9:30 a.m. to rehearse music to sing at the 10:30 a.m. service. Join us.

And keep singing!

Summertime Stress Slowing You Down?

We like to think of summer as being a relaxing, enjoyable time. But hurts, struggles,

crises, and problems don’t take a vacation. Many times, our difficulties seem even

worse during the summer because everyone else seems to be enjoying life while you

are feeling down. If you are experiencing a difficult time—emotionally, spiritually, or

relationally—you don’t have to suffer alone. Our Stephen Ministers are trained care-

givers, ready to listen, care for and encourage you, pray with and for you, and pro-

vide one-to-one Christian care to help you through whatever it is that you are facing.

Men are matched with male Stephen Ministers, and women are matched with female

Stephen Ministers. It’s free. It’s confidential. And it will make a difference in your life!

To learn how to connect someone e with a Stephen Minister, contact Colleen Fowler, ([email protected]) or call the church office. Our Stephen Ministers are here for you!

Digging into Structure and Governance

As our congregation continues the LEAD “Dig-Down” process, we move from the study of the

early church at Philippi, and Paul’s guidance for demonstrating Christian leadership in a non-

Christian world, to looking at our faith community’s systems and structure – seeking ways to be

more effective in joining God in mission in a changing world. By looking at how we are orga-

nized, with leadership roles and decision-making processes, we can ensure that our structure,

mission and practices are clearly aligned with our purpose and core values.

For a number of years, our ministry has been organized into five areas: Worship, Learning, Outreach, Support and

Administrative. In recent years, we have centered on our purpose as “Welcoming, Growing & Sharing in God’s

Grace,” and we recently expanded this purpose with a core-value statement of each of its elements.

One example of applying the Dig-Down process would be realigning our ministries with our purpose – helping to

clarify how everything we do, in Jesus’ name, is part of Welcoming, Growing & Sharing in God’s grace. So, for ex-

ample, many of our Outreach ministries would be part of Sharing in God’s grace; Learning ministries would most

likely be part of Growing in God’s grace.

In coming months, we will continue to look for opportunities to better align our structure, leadership roles and sys-

tems with our core purpose and values – to strengthen our ability to do God’s work in meeting the needs of our disci-

ples, our neighbors and those in need around the world.

Welcoming, Growing & Sharing in God’s Grace!

MORE DIGGING | PASSION, PLANNING & PURPOSE

Have you noticed the new benches by the Stations of the Cross in the church’s front yard - Chatham Rd? They were installed by our own youth member Dylan Nguyen, as his Eagle Scout project. He belongs to Boy Scouts Troop #318 which First Lutheran sponsors. Dylan is 17 years old and attends Oakland Mills High School.

Dylan’s project included selecting materials, designing the placement, and in-stalling three benches. The benches are made of recycled, engineered plastic

lumber that creates durable, strong and long-lasting outdoor furniture. They are also dark green with black legs. Two 6’ benches were installed on Saturday, May 4, by Dylan and his volunteer crew of fellow scouts and adult leaders. A 12’ bench is scheduled for installation on Saturday, May 25. Dylan coordinated his project with the church’s Property Committee by attending two of their meetings to present and discuss his project. As the committee requested a maintenance free material for the benches, $250 was donat-ed to help cover the extra expense of the material compared to traditional wooden benches. The benches cost $940. Be sure to check out the new benches. It is a lovely place to spend time reflecting by the Stations of the Cross, and soon, enjoying the plantings by the Chesapeake Bay Trust Stormwater Grant Project (pg. 9). Thank you, Dylan, for your efforts to upgrade our church property!

In these photos are Dylan as well other scouts who worked on the project. Two

of the scout helpers are also First Lutheran youth, Joel and Leo Omwa.

First Lutheran’s Creation Care Ministry | A Lutheran Calling to Care for God’s Land and

Water and Creatures

Contributed by Cathy Rice

Why do Lutherans care?

The ELCA has supported Caring for Creation in many forms over the years. In 1993, a social statement on Caring

for Creation: Vision, Hope and Justice was approved by the ELCA. It opens with these words:

“As Lutheran Christians, we confess that both our witness to God's goodness in creation and our ac-ceptance of caregiving responsibility have often been weak and uncertain. …This statement summons us, in particular, to a faithful return to the biblical vision. We see the despoiling of the environment as nothing less than the degradation of God's gracious gift of creation. …God blesses the world and sees it as "good," even before humankind comes on the scene. All creation, not just humankind, is viewed as "very good" in God's eyes (Genesis 1:31). God continues to bless the world: "When you send forth your spirit, they are created; and you renew the face of the ground" (Psalm 104:30). By faith we understand God to be deeply, mysteriously, and unceasingly involved in what happens in all creation. God showers care upon sparrows and lilies (Matthew 6:26-30), and brings "rain on a land where no one lives, on the desert, which is empty of human life" (Job 38:26).”

The most current National Church information can be found on Lutherans Restoring Creation website at (https://

lutheransrestoringcreation.org/about-us/).

How can the First Lutheran faith community participate?

Pray for God’s Creation – Whenever you are outside, look around for a sign of God’s creation as described in Gene-

sis. Whenever you eat or drink, thank God for the blessing of food and water that comes from God’s creation and is

a sign of God’s care for us. During worship, take note of the prayer for creation during weekly prayer petitions.

Visit the gardens – In June, the gardens will be mostly installed. Take some time to feel God’s presence there. The

plants in these gardens are all native to the Maryland. This is as close as we can get to a vision of God’s original

creation. We will be co-hosting a picnic with St. John’s Community Association for the church and our neighbors on

June 8th (or 15

th in the event of rain). Join the fun!

Study and Learn – Use the website listed above to find a Bible study, video or article about Caring for Creation from

a Christian/Lutheran perspective. The gardens at First will also have educational signs that will explain how the gar-

dening techniques capture and filter out the pollution that drains from the property.

Plant in the Garden – There is no better way to learn about the earth than to spend a little time digging among the

trees, plants and wildlife. For garden-lovers, we will have at least 25 varieties of plants that you can learn about as

you plant. Check out the display (FELC Guardians of Eden) in the narthex to get a list of planting dates.

Join the Water Brigade – Creating a man-made garden requires intentional care and nurturing of the plants until they

are happy and established in their new home. It will be especially critical to water the gardens often during the sum-

mer months. If you can give 3 hours of time towards this effort, please add your name to the Water Bri-

gade list. *On a personal note: when I first installed native plants on my property and was watering in the

summer, several hummingbirds flitted under my hose and stopped on plants to get some nectar. It was a

God-moment.

And, if you are away a lot during the summer, don’t shy away from participating! You can email Cathy Rice ([email protected]) or Diane Schwarzman ([email protected]) or look for online information in upcoming church notices. "God’s creation, especially water, is a precious resource that God has entrusted to us and has called us to protect for the good of all the earth and its inhabitants."

Thank you, Terry & Linda Kay, for

providing new replacement liners for our offering baskets.

The original liners had become

frayed. Since Longaberger Basket Company went out of business finding

replacements required the use of modern technology (the internet).

We are blessed by the Kay’s perseverance and dedication to God's

ministry here at First.

Thanks to the 15 members who partici-

pated in the semi-annual cleanup of

Frederick Road on Saturday, May 4.

The next road cleanup will be in Octo-
