1Conveyor systems in the baggage handling system ensure smooth, gentle transportation of baggage within the terminals. Whether belt con-veyors, tray-based conveying or drive solutions for storing baggage that is checked in early, baggage transportation systems generally ex-tend over several kilometers between the check-in counter and loading the plane or between unloading the plains and the baggage claim. For this reason, it makes sense to design the system layouts to be as modular as possible and to efficiently link the drive technology. SEW-EURODRIVE’s decentralized technology is setting trends in this field: MOVIGEAR® and the DRC.. electronic motors in the binary, AS- Interface or SNI (Single Line Network Installa-tion) control versions meet all the requirements from retrofitting to setting up a new system. The drives can easily be linked to form intelligent nodes in the conveyor system. Taking the high overload capacity into account and utilizing the entire speed setting range allows the number
of variants used to be minimized while saving energy in all operating situations.This minimizes storage costs, as well as the cost of operating the system. In vertical sort-ing units (VSU) the DRC.. electronic motor’s integrated positioning function can be used with the SEW-EURODRIVE modular gear unit system to boost performance and reduce complexity while allowing full integration into the drive in-frastructure.

High-speed conveyors are particularly important for large, sprawling transfer airports. The bag-gage of transfer passengers must be transport-ed quickly and reliably from one terminal to an-other. But even medium-sized airports can use these systems, especially when high-speed con-veyors are used for sorting. Using contactless technology from SEW-EURODRIVE to transmit energy, data and power offers key advantages. The virtually wear-free and extremely low-main-tenance technology improves transport system availability. In combination with decentralized client controllers and network solutions from SEW-EURODRIVE, it provides a simplified point of contact with customers. The high bandwidth
of the slotted waveguide wireless transmission allows continuous monitoring of the track, e.g. using an IP camera.

Effective and energy-efficient
1 billion pounds were invested on the existing baggage handling systems by Gatwick Airport, London in order to handle its constantly growing number of passengers in 2010. The goal is to increase the capacity to over 24 million passengers a year. The special concerns are reliability, energy efficiency, variant reducing, and cost savings in installation and startup.
The MOVIGEAR® solution of SEW-EURODRIVE was finally chosen not only because it meets all the requirements above, but also because of its excel-lent overload behavior and premium IE4 efficiency. At the beginning, 1,200 drives were installed with the option to increase the amount in the future. Approximately 2,000 drives are now running smoothly at Gatwick Airport.

“For our new baggage systems, it was fundamental for Gatwick Airport to install drives that were carefully selected for their operational function and efficiency. Our primary criteria required exceptional reliability with energy efficiency to help Gatwick achieve its ‘Decade of Change’ environmental targets including reducing carbon emissions.
Secondary criteria included:– Minimizing the number of drive types.– Reducing the number of possible failure modes, e.g. mechanical
brakes, fans etc.– Utilizing simplified control systems.By examining the market we identified MOVIGEAR® of SEW-EURODRIVErange as the drive assembly that best satisfied our criteria. As a measure of our approval we have installed 1,200 drive assemblies* and introduced the specification into our technical standards.”

A straight 2,200 mm conveyor belt was used to compare the effective power consumed by different drive systems. Each comparative cycle in-cluded transportation of 20 suitcases weighing 30 kg each at a linear speed of 0.8 m/s. The belt was started empty each time, and then the
test run was performed. Effective power was consumed in all three supply phases for each system. The measurements showed that significantly bet-ter results were achieved with SEW-EURODRIVE’s MOVIGEAR® mechatron-ic drive system than with other gearmotors with the same technical data.

Airlines are adding more and more destinations. This fact, in combination with the increas-
ing numbers of passengers, means that more and more airports are becoming what are
known as hubs. For example, passengers from North America have to get through airports
in London, Paris or Frankfurt as quickly as possible to reach their connecting flights to
other European destinations on time.
At airports like these that have well over 60 mil-lion passengers a year, more than 50% are tran-sit passengers. Their baggage must be unloaded, transported, sorted and brought to their connect-ing flights as soon as possible. SEW-EURODRIVE has the right system solution for each of these challenges. We particularly focus on the sorting equipment that has to distribute millions of pieces of luggage quickly and reliably. Whether a con-centric sorter is used before of the amount of baggage or whether individual baggage handling

The system includes not only the SLC and FSD linear motors, but also energy transfer, communication and control solu-tions, along with software. The SLC synchronous linear motor is already a market favorite with very high efficiency and low-cost magnet material.
