The company

It all starts with courage and pioneering spirit. 87 years ago.

87 years of SEW-EURODRIVE started with an ingenious inventor:

Albert Obermoser. His gear motor, designed in 1928, revolutionized

drive technology. Christian Pähr, a trained banker, recognized the

enormous potential of that modern drive design and, in 1931 – in the

middle of social and political turmoil – he took a bold step and founded

a company that would go on to set new standards and change the

world of mobility: The Süddeutsche Elektromotoren-Werke in Bruchsal,

SEW. Its 16 employees produced electric motors and gearmotors, elec-

tric band and circular saws and grinding motors on site in Nordbaden.

In 1945 – Central Europe is in ruins – Christian Pähr’s son-in-law

Ernst Blickle took overall responsibility of SEW-EURODRIVE. Under

his leadership, a new milestone of drive technology was achieved in

1965: The implementation of the modular concept for gearmotors.

The basic principle still remains the foundation of our broad portfo-

lio – from high-quality individual components to intelligent complete

solutions – and gives us a decisive advantage over our competitors.

Following the death of Ernst Blickle in 1986, his wife Edeltraut took

over as Managing Partner of SEW-EURODRIVE and again set the

course for the company’s future orientation.

From local player to global leader

SEW-EURODRIVE’s first international production plant was set up by

Ernst Blickle in Haguenau, France, in 1960. It was followed by many

more plants and branches. Blickle’s sons Rainer and Jürgen have

been driving the company’s international goals onward since 1987

in a consequent and very successful way: The company’s status as a

global player is being expanded further step by step.

One very special step was the foundation of SEW-EURODRIVE INC.

in Lyman/USA. Together with the company headquarters in Germany

and the subsidiary in China, it is one of our most important locations.

Today we are looking at 15 production plants and 77 Drive Technol-

ogy Centers in 50 countries, offering products, solutions and services

for a host of customers from different industries: from the automo-

tive industry to transportation, logistics and mining. Always true to our

motto: Driving the world.

Well positioned for the future

That ability to adapt to the demands of an ever changing market

has been a significant factor in further affirming and expanding our

company’s position as a market leader. The many awards SEW-

EURODRIVE received over the years bear witness to this process – from

the “Kundenchampion®” (Customer Champion) to the Environmental

Technology Prize Baden-Württemberg. Our vision for the future is

“Industry 4.0: from smart factory to smart company” – of course with

drive and automation technology by SEW-EURODRIVE. The goal is

to combine the “new” concepts of Industry 4.0 with the established

principles of Lean Management and thus connect all parties involved

in the value creation process: people, technology and the product. This

is not just restricted to technological innovation, but also incorporates

a creative value creation process with the employee front and center

in a “conducting” role.

Such contemplation is not just pure theory at SEW-EURODRIVE, which

is best shown by the showcase factory in our production and logistics

plant in Graben-Neudorf. It illustrates logistics processes which were

created with flexible, autonomous logistics assistants based on the

principles of Industry 4.0. It utilizes our complete modular technology

system – from simulation to drive technology and the complete

control and automation technology, navigation and tracking, energy

supply and storage, all the way to visualization and object-oriented

parameterization.

SEW-EURODRIVE thinks globally and acts locally. We created the

ideal base with our global network of 15 central production plants

and 77 Drive Technology Centers across 50 countries. Our goal:

ensure short delivery times and fast service for our customers the

world over, while taking the specific requirements of the local mar-

kets into account. With that in mind, we founded our first plant out-

side of Germany in Haguenau, France, in 1960. The results of this

• Our annual health day in Bruchsal and Graben-Neudorf offers all

stress prevention through physical checkups and cooperative

activities all the way to a mobile massage facility. The ultimate

aim of these events is to get our employees active, involved and

enthusiastic about the topic of health.

• Individual, flexible working hours and an in-house daycare facility

for children help our employees reconcile career and family.

• Our development programs and career models (management and

expert careers) serve to systematically promote our employees’ pro-

fessional, technical and personal development. We also believe in

Our cooperation agreements and network partnerships

• With “StudiumPlus,” we have entered into a long-term

cooperation with the Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics and

Electronics departments at the Technical College in Karlsruhe,

Germany. StudiumPlus is a cooperative education program that

combines a bachelor's degree from the college with professional

training at SEW-EURODRIVE.

• We have established working groups on the topic of drive

technology at trade schools in various German states.

• Our cooperative endeavors with various universities and colleges

include the following:

- Supporting foundational education and selected research

projects relating to electric drive technology

- Various collaborations with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology

KIT

- Dialog and exchange with the CyberForum in Karlsruhe


• People with severe disabilities are integrated quite naturally by

SEW-EURODRIVE into our shared working life in the course of

training and employment.

• We offer individual support for our employees who are differently

abled or have complaints and limitations, and we provide them with

plenty of assistance in setting up their workplaces and designing

their work environments.

• We rely on target-oriented and consistent cooperation with

universities, technical colleges, and other career-oriented

institutions of higher education.

• Our university marketing activities include plant tours, SEW Days

with specialist lectures, and project topics and professional

contributions in the form of lectures, seminars, and conventions.

Our drive technology seminar, for example, is geared toward

university students and held on a regular basis.

• Our work-study program, StudentsWorld, supports graduate

and undergraduate students who have had particularly successful

internships or theses at SEW-EURODRIVE.

• For our products, we use only environmentally friendly materials and

resources, and at all production levels, we avoid the use of prob-

lematic substances that harm the environment. Thus we comply at

every level with the valid laws and guidelines of the German federal

government and the EU, such as the law on electronic devices and

the EU RoHS directive.

• We make investing in the development of sustainable and energy-

saving products a priority. Such products include AC motors with

an extremely efficient copper casting technology and the effiDRIVE®

energy saving scheme.

• Even during the planning and development of our products, we take

care to optimize their recyclability and promote the reusability of the

raw materials and resources used.

• Since 2008, we have been an official partner of the GoGreen pro-

gram of the Deutsche Post.

• On September 1, 2010, SEW-EURODRIVE began cooperating with

ClimatePartner, an environmental consultancy firm, to ensure that all

of its printed materials are produced carbon-neutrally.

• In 2009, our state-of-the-art assembly plant in the South Indian city

of Chennai was the first green factory commissioned in the drive

technology sector in India.

• The new industrial gear unit plant that we opened in Bruchsal in

2010 implements a sustainable overall model whose technical

capabilities reduce annual CO2 emissions by 1381.5 metric tons

and save up to 1.5 billion liters of fresh water.

• 2010 saw SEW-EURODRIVE commission further climate-friendly

plants and partial systems with modern environmental protection

technology in the French city of Haguenau and in the Brazilian city

of Indaiatuba.


Corporate citizenship

• In the SEW-EURODRIVE Foundation, we have established an institu-

tion whose goal is to effectively encourage scientific work and im-

portant research projects in the areas of technology and business.

• The SEW-EURODRIVE Foundation awards an annual prize for

graduate students as well as the bi-annual Ernst Blickle Award

for outstanding scientists.

• We at SEW-EURODRIVE support a multitude of institutions and

educational establishments with donations and contributions.

Our sustainability projects worldwide

• We at SEW-EURODRIVE encourage environmental protection

measures such as waste separation and recycling.

• We fully embrace the use of energy-saving measures and the latest

technology in order to considerably reduce the energy consumption

at our locations worldwide. This applies especially for potential sav-

ings of high-energy systems in the areas of production, air condi-

tioning and heating.

• In cooperation with local organizations and institutions, we help
