The Addams Family: A New Musical Comedy”—a Broadway take on the television series and film that are both based on Charles Addams’ cartoon—is expected to be as “spontaneous” as the genera- tions-old family, said Jesse Sharp, who takes on the Addams lead of “Gomez.” “(Wednesday) brings her fiancé and his family to the house for din- ner and all hell breaks loose,” said Sharp, who refrained from spilling more details of the production. “It’s the basic Addams plot— whenever the family interacts with someone ‘normal,’ it’s chaos—it sets us up for a lot of comedic mo- ments. That’s where the hilarity comes from, I wouldn’t want to blow it.” First starting as a cartoon series, the The Addams Family had its run in the 1960s as TV series starring John Astin and Carolyn Jones. A film version starring Raul Julia and Angelica Huston hit the big screen in 1991, and in 2010, a hit musical, starring Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth, premiered. Sharp said his Gomez perform- ances are based on Raul Julia’s and John Astin’s characters. “Gomez is still very much so a slicked-back haired Latin lover,” he added. “There’s a lot of room for us to play and make (the show) sponta- neous. That’s the beauty of live the- atre,” Sharp said, who’s been touring with the production for a year. “It’s fun. If something strikes us in the moment, then we go for it— you’re always on your toes and those moments definitely give for a good time.” “The Addams Family” features a book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, and music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa. Musical numbers include “When You’re An Addams,” “One Normal Night,” “Pulled,” “The Moon and Me” and “The Addams Family Theme.” The production is directed by Jerry Zaks with choreography by Sergio Trujillo. Production design (sets and costumes) by Phelim Mc- Dermott and Julian Crouch with set adaptations byJames Kronzer. The production features lighting design by Natasha Katz, sound design by Craig Cassidy and puppetry by Basil Twist. The Addams Family at the Fox Performing Arts Center in River- side, 3801 Mission Inn Avenue, will be a one-night only run at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 12.
