Market night, a collaboration be- tween Loma Linda University Health and the Loma Linda Cham- ber of Commerce, is offered Tues- day evenings in the parking lot along the southeast corner of An- derson and Mound streets, in front of the Loma Linda University Health Welcome Center. While organizers expected a large turnout, the number of participants was still a surprise. "Although we knew that it would be a success, the quick growth and initial turnout still exceeded our ex- pectations," said Andrejs Gale- nieks, a graduate student and health policy analyst at Loma Linda Uni- versity Institute for Health Policy and Leadership. Since Loma Linda is such a tight knit community, organizers said bringing a farmers market to the area was important to keep commu- nity partnerships and relationships thriving. The hope is to grow the market, much like other neighbor- ing cities have. "The farmer's market is a product of Healthy Loma Linda efforts and priority areas from community workshops such as the food envi- ronment and creating a city center, said Juan Carlos Belliard, assistant vice president of community part- nerships with Loma Linda Univer- sity. Efforts to bring a market night to the Loma Linda campus were in the works for approximately six months, organizers said, and the ef- forts are paying off since there al- ready is a high demand for vendor spots. "Through a partnership between Healthy Loma Linda and the Loma Linda Chamber of Commerce, farmer market vendors in the area were approached and invited to par- ticipate. It's been highly popular and starting with the first week, there was a waiting list for the ven- dors," Galenieks said. Market night features organic pro- duce, fresh fruits and vegetables from local farmers, as well as pre- pared food, crafts and services from local businesses and groups. Farmer’s Market Night is in addi- tion to the Loma Linda Farmer’s Market hosted by the Chamber, which will continue every Sunday morning on Barton Frontage Road. So far, there has been a mix of fresh produce, prepared food and craft vendors, with the majority of them being local vendors, Belliard said. “As a certified farmer's market, all fresh produce is required to be grown locally (San Bernardino and Riverside counties). We would like to see the market represent the health focus of the Loma Linda community, offering fresh fruits, produce, and healthy food options," he added. Funds raised through the Loma Linda Farmer's Market help sup- port the Chamber of Commerce and the growth of the market.
