Trends/Forecasts

o According to comScore, the number of handset users accessing social-networking sites or blogs on their devices grew 2.1 percentage points to 33 percent of all U.S. mobile subscribers .

o In 2011, US mobile commerce sales (including travel) surged 91.4% to reach $6.7 billion. Continued strong growth will boost sales to $31 billion in 2015 (eMarketer).

o Smartphone shoppers accounted for 93.1% of all mobile shoppers in 2011, a jump from 75.2% in 2010, indicating that virtually all mobile commerce will soon take place on smartphones (eMarketer).

o Nokia has purchased the Norwegian company Smarterphone, creator of an operating system that brings smartphone-like features to basic cellphones. The acquisition was actually completed back in November, but today it was made public by Smarterphoneinvestor Ferd Capital, which put 6.5 million Euros (about $8.3 million) into the company since 2007.

Adoption/Penetration

o For the month of December, Net Applications saw 53% of mobile and tablet access to the Web coming from the Apple Safari browser, followed by 21.66% from the Opera Mini browser, 15.87% from Android, 3.33% from Symbian and 3.05% from Blackberry.

o comScore reported in its survey of mobile subscribers that 47% of the 91.4 million U.S. smartphone owners say they are using an Android operating system, compared to 28.7%

using Apple.

o According to Forrester, more than 80 percent of U.S. mobile users 18 to 22 years of age access the Internet outside the home.
