Mobile Trends

Nielsen released a new report, “Advertising & Audiences: State of the Media,” focusing on what drives people’s TV viewing habits, including multi-screen viewing. The multi-screen and TV related findings include:– 33% of participants surveyed shopped on their tablets while watching TV.– 29% of participants looked up information related to the TV program they were watching.– 36% of participants visited a social network site during a TV program.

A recent Alliance Data “Mobile Moms Retail” Survey, which measured the attitudes and opinions of female store-branded credit card holders about their mobile devices, found that moms are quick to use their mobile phones to shop versus driving to the store to make purchases. Additional findings include: – 29% said the No. 1 reason they use their phones to shop is because it’s quick and easy.– Almost all – 96% – of moms surveyed said they like receiving SMS/text messages and emails from their favorite retailers.– 44% are self-professed showroomers, using their phones to actively shop and compare products online, especially at

electronics stores and big-box retailers.

eMarketer recently reported that mobile will take a greater percentage of total ecommerce retail sales. This year, eMarketer is predicting that 15% of online retail sales will take place via mobile devices, up from 11% in 2012. Additional eMarketer predictions mobile growth in eCommerce sales include:– US retail mcommerce sales will reach nearly $39 billion in 2013, up 56.5% over 2012 and almost triple the amount spent in

2011.– In 2013, 79.4 million US consumers, amounting to 51% of digital buyers, will purchase online using a mobile device. By 2017,

77.1% of digital buyers in the US will use a mobile device to make at least one online purchase.– By 2017, tablets' share of US retail mcommerce sales will rise to 71.5%, vs. 27% for smartphones.
