EARLY LIFE AND CAREER Born October 28, 1955 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu

Bachelor’s degree from Madras Christian College in 1974

Post graduate diploma in management from IIM , Calcutta.

Also holds a master’s degree in public and private management from the Yale School of Management.

After completion of MBA, Nooyi’s first job was with Tootal ,a British textile company .

She was product manager at Johnson & Johnson.

Nooyi went to work as a director of international corporate strategy projects for Boston Consulting Group in 1980

she joined Motorola in 1986 as the vice-president and director of corporate strategy & planning.

She moved to Asea Brown Boveri in 1990 and spent four years as vice president (corporate strategy & planning).

PEPSICO EXECUTIVE Nooyi joined PepsiCo as senior vice president,

corporate strategy and development in 1994 and was named president and CFO in 2001.

 According to Business Week, since she started as CFO in 2000,  the company's annual revenues have risen 72%, while net profit more than doubled, to $5.6 billion in 2006.

In 2007 she became the fifth CEO in PepsiCo's 44-year history

Established the corporate mission- PERFORMANCE WITH PURPOSE

This approach includes three components:

human sustainability (an increase in the nutrition of products),

STRATEGIC DECISIONS

Nooyi took the lead in the acquisition of Tropicana in 1998.

She was lead negotiator on Pepsi's $13 billion purchase of Quaker oats.

Formation of a team called Power of One - Americas Council and Global Snacks Group.

PepsiCo to spin off its restaurant business into independent business.

Created new distribution system which reduces overall cost and increased sales.

Adopted Direct store delivery system.

She was also instrumental in beating Coca-Cola for beverage-maker SoBe, which Pepsi acquired for $337 million.

HONOURS AND AWARDSForbes magazine ranked Nooyi fourth on the 2008 and 2009 list of The World's 100 Most Powerful Women.

Fortune magazine has named Nooyi number one on its annual ranking of Most Powerful Women in business for 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010.

In 2008, Nooyi was named one of America's Best Leaders by U.S. News & World Report.

In 2008, she was elected to the Fellowship of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Nooyi has been named 2009 CEO of the Year by Global Supply Chain Leaders Group.

In January 2008, Nooyi was elected Chairwoman of the US-India Business Council (USIBC).

In 2010 she was named #1 on Fortune's list of the "50 Most Powerful Women" and #6 on Forbes' list of the "World's 100 Most Powerful Women".

Leadership traits needed for CEO’S 1. Focus on the long term: Nooyi stated the notion of

focusing on short-term earnings is a thing of the past. 

2. Think globally and act locally: Businesses that have customers in different markets across the world need to tailor products, business models, and people practices to each market. 

3. Become more open-minded: CEOs have to become learning CEOs, she said. They need to continue to adopt the next leadership principles and learn about technology and the younger generations. 

4. Develop emotional intelligence: Nooyi is an advocate of emotional intelligence. She said the way to hold on to employees is by hooking them emotionally to the job, through the company’s business model and what it stands for.
