poorly worded, that approximates your thought (you can revise this later) and go on with the next idea.

Writer’s block could be a sign that your ideas need time to gestate. So, don’t be hard on yourself. Some writers find it helpful to switch back and forth from one project to another. Whether this minimizes fear or boredom, or both, it seems to prevent writer’s block for many people. The key is to remember Why you are writing in the first place. So re-evaluate what you are writing and why you are writing it.

Are you writing what you love, or what you think you should be writing? The writing that feels most like play will end up delighting you the most, and this is the writing your readers will instinctively connect with. at the end of the day, writing is too hard to do it for any other reason. if you continue to touch base with the joy you first felt in writing, it will sustain you, not only through your current block, but through whatever the future holds.

jerry rodriguez :: yes, he sings :: editor :: photo | Jerry’s Mamma

Writer’s Block.creativity sometimes comes and goes. but, if you got it, you got it. if you feel that you have lost it, i think it is still possible to get it back. One thing that remains constant within a determined individual that aspires to write or create is the actual art of writing or creating. artists get inspired and influenced in many different ways. Whether it is comes spontaneously, in a dream, a good or bad relationship, subconsciously, or on your thrown, the thoughts and creativity are still very alive and very real. if you got it, you got it. but, at one point, a writer or artist may experience the inability to put thoughts down on paper.

Overcoming this barrier can be extremely frustrating. Especially, if the creativity that has been endlessly flowing like a river suddenly stops. Finding yourself in that confusing and arresting state of mind can cause you to feel inadequate, fatigued, overwhelmed, lost and even powerless. it can cause you to feel like putting down the pen and simply giving up.

Trust me, i can relate. i suggest that you go walk your dog, go to a movie, visit family, change your scenery, or read a book. This will not discredit your ability to write. it will only feed it to refuel the creativity needed to reenergize. Maybe you should force yourself to write down something, however

What does the word “fine” on a piece of sheet music indicate?

“ned’s Studio”, located in La, was born from the good fortune of having a three car garage. having this great space has made it possible to live his musical philosophy, “Let’s make it!”

One of the first jobs (and greatest influences) were for the great Jeff barry from new york and alan Toussaint from new Orleans. “Those guys believe in a hook, a good song and having a good time.” between new york, new Orleans and Los angeles, ned has been able to work with, write with and/or produce some great artists that range from bobby bloom, The Monkees and archie’s, to the Meters, Olivia newton John, the bangles and many others.

in the six years of existence, ned’s Studio has produced many cd’s for many artists. One of the first productions was with the great jazz pianist, Terry Trotter.

“The indie scene and technology has changed the system for the better.” a successful and inspiring model has been the recording experience with the incredible guitarist, doug pettibone. his first album, “The West gate” is the first of a series of recordings that was recorded at ned’s Studio. “The goal is not sales, but making better and better records. Sales follow good music.”

doug’s model is working well for other artists, too. The amazing singer, gia ciambotti, (“right as rain”), is on the road with Joe Walsh this summer. While Joe isn’t pushing the record at his show, he has been incredibly supportive. in our June issue, you met doug’s all time favorite drummer, herman Matthews. “doing anything with herman is a gift.”

always at the ready is an exciting (can do it all) young musician and outstanding songwriter, ben Jaffe. One of the most rewarding aspects of ned’s Studio, when dealing with today’s technology, and having a live space large enough for a band to play together, is the ability to make time for ‘first timers’. The studio has offered opportunities for young players to get their feet wet in television. an example is the album and sound track recorded for new ventures such as “The banana Splits” for universal/Warner bros./The cartoon network.

“i still practice the same things i was taught in the beginning: you’ve got to have a good hook, good players, a skilled and good-humored engineer (we have two, gardner knight and Todd Miller) and you’ve got a successful recipe for a good recording.”

Some bAddd babes...

S u g a r S w e e t Sbreak ing recordsin 1995 Music publisher bernadette O’reilly and composer/producer Eve nelson crossed paths. This meeting manifested the creation of a production company known as nelson-O’reilly productions. They were writing, producing, and composing songs for various artists such as chaka khan, Eva cassidy and Melba Moore, just to name a few. Eve was also into writing themes and TV commercial jingles. This included commercials for Lorea’l, coca-cola, Lowes, Exxon, and i can’t believe its not butter. For you nba fanatics, “i Love This game” is also a product of nelson-O’reilly. a more detailed display of their work is listed in the discography and Television/Film section of their web sight: nelsonoreilly.com. (i am sure you will be like me and say, “awe man, i remember that!”)

To add fuel to the fire, in 2006, bernadette opted to create a record label called breaking records. This decision was triggered by her desire to release a cd of a rock band known as Lourds. Shortly after launching the record label, they were blessed and thrilled to release their biggest artist/seller, Entertainer/comedienne Sandra bernhard “Everything bad & beautiful”.

The brilliance and expertise of Sherrie Fell in Video, digital and new Media merited her the position of Sr. Vp for breaking records. She is also a tenacious creative talent in the areas of concept marketing and promotion.

Eve nelson is currently assisting in the development of new indie artists across the country. chaka kahn once said, “Eve nelson is simply the best. She can

do anything.” This includes, but not limited to, writing, arranging, composing, conducting, or inadvertently squeezing her cat into her sofa bed. “Meow!”

–jerry rodriguez :

ind Who are you producing right now?jab i am working with local artists. but, i am getting ready to work with adina howard and Tamar davis.

ind do you focus more hip-hop/r&b?jab yeah, but it really doesn’t matter to me. For me, it is whatever the demand is.Lately, i’ve been getting a lot of rap artist that come to me. i’ve been fulfilling their needs.

ind What advice do you have for artist getting in the business?jab Like anything man, learn the basics. Try to be the best you can be before you step in this ring because, if you are going to be a boxer, dog, you are in there to win. you gotta train. have your chops ready. Then come in here and be on the level where you are ready to grow.

ind do you feel that some kind of musical training is important for hip-hip and rap artists?jab it can’t do anything but help them. i mean, the more you know the basics, the more it will allow your mind to grow. it won’t keep you limited.

ind What inspired you to start producing?jab Well, i had been learning other people’s music. playing in different bands. Then i said, “Wait a minute, i am playing everybody’s music. i need to do my own music.”

ind is there anyone that you desire to produce for?jab Man, there are a lot of people. i’d like to collaborate with Stevie, prince, man, the list can go forever because there are a lot of talented people out there. i’d like to work with them and come up with something monstrous.

ind What was your experience working with Van hunt?jab With Van hunt, it was a refreshing loose vibe. When i worked with Van, that is when r&b was just really straight r&b. We just had a sense of freedom. We could do anything.

ind Where do you think hip-hop is going now?jab i think hip-hop is making another turn. i think it is going to go back to the rappers featured on r&b records. people are really going to start to listen to singers now. i mean, i think american idol proved that.

ind nothing new has been created since the baroque era. you always hear hints of music repeating itself from one song to another. do you agree?jab yes, there is always a category. now we are just biting off of it and giving it a twist to keep it fresh to the new ears.

ind Where do you see reggaeton going?jab reggaeton is always going to have its place. all nationalities want to have their identity. We were young black people doing rap and hip-hop. So, they had to go find their little niche so that they could be identified too. Every race wants to have something they created so that they could say, “This is ours. as a youth, we created this. This is something we put in the history books.”

ind We wrote about that in the article about Tercera Vizion (aug 07 iLM issue):jab right, That is one reason why rap became so powerful because the guys who couldn’t sing felt left out. but with rap, that was something that they could relate to and identify with. That was because they could speak what they had to say and be identified. it gave then a sense of hope.

ind Where does Jab see himself in 2 years?jab i am trying to get into some scoring. The music thing is fine, but i want to get into the movie thing. getting recognized for scoring and stuff like that.

ind how much support do you get from your family?jab Oh man, it’s 100%. My mom and dad were musicians so that came to the veins through them. Everybody in my family is in entertainment.
