European Athletics President’s Welcome Message

European Athletics is delightedthat the SPAR European CrossCountry Championships areback in Italy for a third time withChia hosting the 23rd edition.Fresh from Chia-Pula stagingthe successful European10,000m Cup in June last year,it is wonderful to return to thiscoastal area in southern Sardiniaas the region shows itsversatility for the big athleticsevents, from the track in 2015to the tricky, undulatingterrain in 2016.There is always something reallyspecial about the SPAREuropean Cross CountryChampionships because it is the final majorcompetition of the year.Every athlete wants to go out on a high note andwhat a way to enter a new year it can be for thatwin a medal or produce personal bestperformances.In a sport that is so much about individualsuccess, the team ethic plays such a big role in theSPAR European Cross Country Championships

with team medals in all six races.These are championships wheresuperstars of the future cantruly be born too – as GreatBritain’s Mo Farah showedin San Giorgio su Legnano in2006, the last occasion Italywas the host, after Ferrarahad staged the event in 1998.Farah’s win that day was hisfirst senior championship goldand he has progressed tobecome one of the greatestdistance runners of all time.I would like to thank in advancethe Italian Athletics Federationand the Chia 2016 LocalOrganising Committee for

their continued efforts in organising these SPAREuropean Cross Country Championships andI would also like to thank the media, officials,athletes and our stakeholders for all theircontinued support.I am sure Chia will be a great successand I look forward to being partof Europe’s cross country family in Sardiniain December.

We are proud to host the 23rdedition of the SPAR EuropeanCross Country Championships.Chia will be the theatre, where,on 11thDecember, the bestEuropean Cross Countryspecialists from dozens ofnations will fight for one of thetwelve continental titles atstake.After the previous editions heldin Ferrara and San Giorgio suLegnano, the European CrossCountry Championships will behosted for the third time in Italy.The continental Championshipswill be held in the province ofCagliari on a fascinating course,surrounded by the typicallandscape of Southern Sardinia.

Italy therefore renews afortunate tradition, whichhas left in the memoriesand hearts of many,vivid emotions duringthe years.We thank the EuropeanAthletics for assigning onceagain a great internationalevent to our Country.We also would like to thankthe Institutions and theLocal Organizing Committee,the media, the CompetitionOfficials and all our Partnersfor their valuable support.Eventually thanks tothe athletes, who willcertainly be able to makethis event memorable.

Chia Laguna Resort includes a small shoppingmall. During the special opening for theChampionships, a few selected shops and the barin the Piazzetta will be open.It is recommended to check the open-ing hoursdisplayed in the shop.

All major credit cards such asEurocard/Mastercard, American Expressand Visa are accepted. If you need cash, at theresort is available an ATM as well as at theairport in Cagliari. The closest towns to Chiaare Domus De Maria (6 km) and Pula (18 km).

Photographers’ BriefingThe Photographers’ briefing will be held in thevenue course on Sunday 11 December, at 8:30 am.Numbered bibs will be distributed during thebriefing.All accredited photographers must attend thebriefing, since distribution of Photo bibs will takeplace and the circulation through the course willbe explained.Photo bibs will be distributed only in exchangeof an ID or a deposit equivalent to 20 EUR toensure they are returned to EA at the end ofthe competition.All the photographers will be able to workfrom dedicated infield positions.

Internet ConnectionThe Media Centre at the Chia Laguna Resort, theMixed zone and the media tribune on the coursevenue will be served by a free dedicated Wi-Fiinternet service.Accredited media representatives will be able toget their own internet access credentials uponrequest at the Media Desks.All the photographers will be able to work fromdedicated infield positions.

TransportationMedia representatives will be transferred fromand to the airport according to travel details.Media representatives staying at the mediahotel (Aquadulci Hotel, Chia, Loc. Spartivento,09010 Domus de Maria, Cagliari, Italia)will be transferred from the media hotelto the course and viceversa.
