Enrichment week is always packed with workshops and activities for the students in Kindy to Year 6 and this week we have seen and even fuller program, of events. Monday’s Inter-House sculpture competition was a tremendous success with Bondi, Bronte and Coogee teams crea- tive incredible sculptures. These sculptures will be on display at the Open Day next term where viewers will vote for the best artwork. Well done to everyone for working in teams effec- tively to reach a common goal. The school has seen 26 Visual Art workshops this week taking place in various venues across the school and in the surrounding area. The students have been exposed to animation, oil pastels, sculpture, cartooning, glass, mosaics, photography and green screen filming. I would like to extend my thanks to the following people for their involvement in our cultural enrichment week. Cindy Shames, Celina Stang, Kin Smith, who assisted with the sculpture day guiding the students and offering advice on how to achieve their goals; Dagmar Acker- man, an international glass artist who thoroughly inspired our students with the amazing medi- um of glass; Sally Mayman, an international artist who, with the support of the Moran Founda- tion, took our student on a memorable journey with photography; Kay Runcie from the Mosaic School of Sydney for her inspirational Year 3 mosaic workshop; Lewis Morley from the Aus- tralian Film Television and Radio School for the incredible animation workshop; Cartoon King- dom and Linsay Moss from Star Time Studios for their efforts with the K – 2 cartooning, and green screen and special effects workshops. Such diverse and hands-on workshops have been an incredible way to finish the term and there is no doubt that a week of such activities really does enrich the lives of our students. None of this would have been possible without the huge effort of Mr. Mark Bailey who worked extremely hard to create this incredible week. We are very lucky to have such a passionate visual arts specialist. Not to be outdone, our Music Department has provided us with two unbelievable events this week as part of the June Music Festival. Showcasing the ensemble groups in our Primary Instrumental Program, the ensembles included string, percussion, brass, and vocal ensem- bles; choirs, concert bands; rock bands; chamber music; piano duets; One of the newest ad- ditions to the ensemble performances was the percussion drumlines which kept audiences enthralled from beginning to end. The incredible growth in the number and level of the music performances is testament to the superior music department’s hard work and excellence. Thank you to Dr. Michael McGregor, Mrs. Sue Goodman, Ms. Tanya Bethune, Mr. Oliver Stanton, Mr. Dimitri Calligeros, Mr. Gary Goldstein, Mr. Dominiquw Geurbois, Ms. Jen- nifer Roberts, Ms. Marina Suraev, Ms. Jennifer Bonner, Mr. Siebe Pogson, Ms. Ana Na- pier, Mr. john-Mikael Hellqvist, Mr. Alistair Wallis, Ms. Priscilla Gauci, Mr. Marcus Bortolotti, Mrs. Elli Bortolotti, Mr. Michael Sitsky, Ms. Bridget O’Donnell and Ms. Emily Duffill for providing the students with the lessons, guidance and support to perform so well. We certainly did see Reddam House excellence on stage.

I would like to congratulate Tia Hinds (Year 5) for her recent selection in into the NSWCIS Touch Football side to be played in Tamworth in August. This star athlete represented City in the U11’s representation AFL Carnival last weekend where she stood out not only as a start player, but since she was the only girl playing. Generally a male dominated sport, Tia is challenging the stereotype and creating waves in the AFL world. Well done, Tia, for making your own path towards your sporting goals! The term has come to an end and of course, looking back, there are many groups of people I would like to thank. Reddam is made ever more special because of the dedicated and enthusiastic staff members who believe that effective education is comprised of hard work, stimulating lessons, creative environments and positive relationships with students. I would like to thank the teaching staff in the primary school for the effort they have given through the term. It does not go unnoticed by anyone. Thank you for your unwavering commit-ment to your students and the school. Thank you also to the administration staff who have, once again, worked effectively to ensure the smooth running of a very busy school. I am grateful to have such an excellent team of people with whom to work. Thank you to our cleaning team, Ellie and Ken, that has kept our school clean and sparkling this term. Be-hind the scenes, these dedicated individuals work quietly and I would like to extend my sincere thanks for this challenging job. Our maintenance crew that works hard to keep our school looking good, ensuring that it is a safe environ-ment for your children, is absolutely outstanding and I would like to thank Bebot, Wilson and Rydell for their commitment to Reddam House. While we head off into the holidays, this term will work tirelessly around the school in preparation for Term three. Thank you to each and everyone member of this team. Finally, thank you to you, parents and caregivers, for your support and involvement in the school and in your children’s education. Many of you go out of your way to support the wide array of events we host, never wa-vering in your commitment. I wish you all a safe and relaxing holiday with much family time. School reopens on Tuesday 16 July.

Kindergarten have spent the past two weeks learning about the history of Australia. We have been finding out about the first Australians, the Aboriginal People. Our visit to the Museum and the hands-on activities enabled us to put all that learning into a real life experience. We were fortunate to handle real aboriginal weapons, musical instruments, household utensils and even did some cave painting. Jimmy, our guide, took great delight in allowing the boys to play the didgeridoos. He taught us that many of the suburbs we live in have Aboriginal names such as Woollahra, Coogee, Tamarama and Bondi. We even had our faces painted with special Aboriginal symbols using real ochre. It was a won-derful morning of learning and ended with us viewing the dinosaur and Australian Animals exhibit.

Year One enjoyed bringing their scooters to school. Scooter day was fun. Children learned that it helps us keep fit, and it gives us mobility. It also helped Year One develop good judgment and self-confidence, safe practices and lifelong skills. The most import part of having fun cycling is to learn to do it safely. As the holidays are nearing here is a basic set of rules that Year One have put together for bike safety during the holidays: 1. No playing on the road. 2. No riding on busy streets. 3. Stop and look before entering a roadway to cross or for any other reason. 4. Bicycle ride with traffic regardless of whether it is on the road, on the shoulder or on a sidewalk. 5. Stop for all stop signs and obey all other traffic signs and signals. 6. Keep at least one hand on the handlebars at all times -- two is better. 7. No riding at night -- even in broad daylight bright cloths are good.

For news last week, Year 2 students had to research a family favourite, or cultural dish to share with the class. Whilst some students chose to discuss their dish, some went above and beyond, and actu-ally created it to share with the class. We enjoyed sampling Filipino fried banana, traditional scones, Singaporean rice and chicken, porridge, Russian pancakes and desserts, American waffles and ba-gels, chocolate, soup and Scottish shortbread. Hmmmm – delicious!

Year 5 had a visitor, Gilbert the green tree frog, join their Science lesson. Gilbert is the pet of Nicholas Keleman and we learnt how to take care of him. We also had the opportunity to feel his soft, slimy skin. My Magnificent Green Tree Frog By Nicholas Keleman The magnificent green tree frog lives for 25 years. It also lives in the Kimberley Desert, Western Australia. It has white spots that turn yellow when it matures. Its feet suction to walls when it wants to climb. If it eats lots of food with vitamin C, it can grow up to 10cm. The green tree frog can also eat baby mice and crickets. They live in fresh water, so if you use tap water you need tap wa-ter conditioner or you need to leave the tap water outside for 10 days. NEVER put the frog with a different species of frog. AL-WAYS wash hands with water. NO soap please.

What a busy term this has been for everybody and in a wink of an eye, it seems, Term 2 is but a memory. This will be my final contribution to the newsletter, so I would like to take the opportunity to thank all the exceptional primary teachers who have supported the library. Also a special thanks to the wonderful Reddam families who have also supported the library through book donations, by volunteering time to cover books and by helping to keep me abreast of new and popular titles. Mainly, though, I wish to thank the amazing Primary students for sharing their love of books and reading with me. I shall miss you all very much. Looking forward though, there are some brilliant new books on the library shelves. Years 5 & 6 attended the Children’s Writer’s Festival this term and were inspired by three wonderful Australian writers, Jackie French, Brian Falkner and Sally Rippin. Jackie French is known for her historical novels (Hitler’s Daughter, Macbeth and Son) as much as for her interest in wombats (Diary of A Wombat). I have added a few more of Jackie’s historical titles to our collection which will make great reading for our 5s and 6s. The Girl from Snowy River is set in 1919 and 17 year old Flinty McAl-pine cannot understand what the war has done to change the men folk in her life. The Donkey Who Car-ried the Wounded is a retelling of the legendary Simp-son and his donkey story from World War I. Nanberry: Black Brother White is set in 1789 in the new colony at Sydney Cove. Young Aboriginal boy, Nanberry, is adopted by the colony’s surgeon John White and raised with his white ‘brother’ Andrew. Sally Rippin has written for all ages and presented An-gel Creek at the Festival. Not as dense as French’s novels, this book will appeal to those who enjoy a light and uplifting read. This story is about finding a baby angel with a broken wing. Brian Falkner was a most impressive speaker and I know students cannot wait to get their hands on his books, Northwood and Maddy West and the Tongue Taker. Enjoy a safe and happy holiday break and until next time – Happy Reading!

Since completing their exams, Year 5 has commenced their study of poetry which will be a large focus next term. To commence their studies of poetry, and to enable them to think about various poetic structures, students of Year 5 have started writing autobiographical poems that will feature as the in-troduction to their studies of English in their portfolios next term. Using a very clear and concise struc-ture, students were to think deeply about what makes them who they are and then using this struc-ture, they were to communicate their ideas. Marc Mennes followed the structure beautifully to com-pose this autobiographical poem about himself. Marc Mennes Friendly, funny, kind. Son of Melania and Louis. Who loves go-karting, skate boarding and playing the Xbox. Who feels extreme love towards his family. Who needs respect, responsibility and sugar! Who gives jokes to his friends, money to the poor and hugs to his mum. Who fears spiders, getting sucked into an elevator and garden gnomes. Who’d like to see the Grand Canyon because I haven’t been there and I’ve heard it’s amazing. Who dreams of playing Xbox all day long! A student of Reddam House. Marc M.

In contrast, Year 6 have continued to extend upon their studies about the way various composers of texts use symbols to communicate their ideas. Instead of analysing symbolism in poetry and visual texts, students began looking at the way the Aboriginal culture use symbols to tell stories that are passed on from generation to generation. These stories are known as ‘Dreamtime Stories.’ Year 6 studied the story of The Rainbow Serpent and were given quite a task – to tell the story in the form of an artwork using commonly known Aboriginal symbols, colours and pictures. Every student in Year 6 excelled in this task and realised that we don’t always need to use words to communicate ideas. Fea-tured below are by Thomas Youngman and Saphira Moran pieces of art that clearly show the Rain-bow Serpent working its way through the landscape, creating the mountains and valleys, before swal-lowing two boys and then letting them go as birds.

This week, the Year 5 Extension English class tried their hands at writing cinquain poems. Using ei-ther the 2, 4, 6, 8, 2 word structure, or the 2, 4, 6, 8, 2 syllable structure, the students played with fig-ures of speech such as metaphors, alliteration, onomatopoeia and similes to create meaning. Hamish Dawson wrote three wonderful poems expressing his views of tigers, good time, and war. Due to the limited words inherent in the structure of a cinquain, Hamish did exceptionally well to make good word choices which effectively conveyed meaning and emotion.

Tigers Tigers Fast as lions; brave as tiny birds in winter’s jaws

Good times Good times are the old times All strong, they still stand stiff Nothing can destroy them – still they stand

War Up, down and a hup, two, three, four, as the march goes on all day long Hup two three four with war

This week has been a very exciting week in the Music Department at Reddam House. Starting on Tuesday 18 June, the Year 5 & 6 Concert Band performed at the prestigious Engadine Band Festival with many other schools from all around NSW. The adjudicator commented on their “professionalism on stage and their good balance in sound”. We were delighted to bring home a “Silver award” and trophy. All ensemble groups from Year 1 – Year 6 have been involved in rehearsals and performances in preparation for the Music Festival and Performing Arts assemblies. Well done to all students.

What an amazing week it has been for the Visual Arts during our Cultural program. Monday's Inter-House Sculpture Day was another great success with all the students from K-6 having some form of creative input into their own respective House Sculptures. All three sculptures will officially go on display during Reddam's "Open Day" celebrations. Parents and visitors will all get the opportunity to view the works and then vote on their favourite. As well as the Inter-house Sculpture Competition there has also been 26 specialised Visual Arts work-shops. Ranging from functional forms, photography, animation, landscape oil pastel work, sculpture, cartooning, glass, mosaics and green screen film and T.V.

A special thank you must go out to all the artists who participated in the program. Cindy Shames, Celina Stang and Kim Smith helped guide the students during the sculpture day com-petition, working as artists in residence. Dagmar Ackerman an international glass artist inspired the students with her amazing artworks formed from glass. Sally Mayman another international artist inspired our budding photographers with her all day photo-graphic workshops, which was kindly provided by the Moran Foundation. Kay Runcie from the Mosaic School of Sydney helped year 3 to create great mosaic artworks, while Cindy Shames taught the year 3s how to create a Calder like cane and wire mobile. Lewis Morley from The Australian Film Television and Radio School created a real buzz in year 4 when he discussed his animation work on movies such as Razor Back, Matrix, Mission Impossible and Star Wars 2 and 3. The boys and girls had a great time creating their own mini animated movies using the Art Studio iPads. Cartoon Kingdom and Lindsay Moss from Star Time studios helped to inspire the K-2s with outstand-ing workshops in green screen movie making and special effects as well as cartooning. Thank you to Dee Pitcairn for her continued support for the Visual Arts at Reddam House! Many of the guest artists were amazed at the diverse artistic programs on offer. They say that Art is food for the soul! I know that the artistic programs on offer this week have well and truly given Reddam students a smorgas-bord of tastes and maybe even ignit-ed a passion or interest.

This week Taekwondo students took a Promotion Test this week. Students demonstrated nicely what they have learned so far. We would like to introduce our attitude and some actions.
