FEATURED ARTISTS

John Scofield, guitar When I first got into jazz - around 1969, I came from playing R&B and Soul in High School. Jazz Rock was in its infancy stage and I was lucky enough to be around to experience the Golden Age of both Rock and Soul and see Jazz embrace that movement while I was trying to learn how to play straight ahead Jazz. A lot of my early chances to actually gig were in various Jazz/Rock idioms. I got to play "real" jazz with Gary Burton and Gerry Mulligan but my real first "big time" gig was with the Billy Cobham/George Duke band. We got to play in gigantic concert halls and rock venues for excited people who were not necessarily jazz aficionados, but loved the music.

After that band ended, I stayed home in NYC and worked on playing acoustic jazz with my own groups and people like Dave Liebman. I also started an ongoing musical relationship with bassist Steve Swallow that continues to this day. As a jazz bassist and real songwriter (not just a composer) Swallow has influenced me as much as anyone. In 1982, I joined the Miles Davis Band, answering the call of funky jazz once again. My stint with Miles made me sure that there really was a kind of music that was both funky and improvised at the same time.

After playing with Miles for over three years and making a few more records of my own, I hooked up with ex-P-Funk drummer Dennis Chambers, and we made a group that really utilized funk rhythms. Dennis and bassist Gary Grainger were masters of that "James Brown/ Earth Wind and Fire/ ?O's thing". It was great having that under

neath my tunes.

When I signed with Blue Note Records in 1989, I decided to explore more "swinging" avenues. I got together with my old Berklee School buddy, genius saxophonist Joe Lovano. We had a group and made three albums for Blue Note - four counting a bootleg from Europe - that are probably my very best "jazz" endeavors. Part of that can also be attributed to the magnificent drumming of Bill Stewart, who is as good a musician as I've ever met. - from an excerpt by John Scofield

Terri Lyne Carrington, drums World-renowned drummer, composer, producer and clinician, Terri Lyne Carrington, has maintained her status in the industry as a person to watch for over 20 years.

Born in Medford, Massachusetts in 1965, Terri developed a reputation as a child prodigy, jamming with jazz veterans Dizzy Gillespie, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Oscar Peterson, Joe Williams, and many more. At 7, she was given her first set of drums, which had belonged to her grandfather, Matt Carrington, who had played with Fats Waller and Chu Berry. After studying privately for three years, she played her first major performance at the Wichita Jazz Festival with Clark Terry. Shortly afterward she received a full scholarship at age 11 to Berklee College of Music where she started playing with such people as Kevin Eubanks, Mike Stern, Branford Marsalis, Greg Osby and others. She also studied under master drum instructor Alan Dawson and made a private recording entitled, TLC and Friends, with Kenny Barron, Buster

Page 6: Illinois State University Jazz Festival

Williams, George Coleman and her dad, Sonny Carrington, before turning 17.

In 1989, Terri moved to Los Angeles where she became the drumm~r for the "Arsenio Hall Show". She has also toured the globe with Mike Stern, Joe Sample, Al Jarreau, Herbie Hancock and spiritual mentor, Wayne Shorter. Her debut release on Polygram, Real Life Story, was nominated for a Grammy Award and featured Carlos Santana, Patrice Rushen, John Scofield, Grover Washington, Jr., and Gerald Albright.

Recently, she has concentrated her efforts on writing and producing with various artists including Gino Vannelli, Dianne Reeves, Siedah Garrett, Marilyn Scott and Danish pop singers Stig Rossen and Monique. Her production of Dianne Reeves' Grammy-nominated CD, That Day, hovered at the top of the charts for many months. Terri was also the drummer on the late night TV show, "VIBE", hosted by Sinbad.

Guest Artist, Kathy Kosins Vocalist Kathy Kosins stands out among her peers of today by possessing a rare combination: a richly nuanced voice, technical proficiency, eclectic repertoire, and prodigious talent as a composer. On the one hand, she has been hailed by The Chicago Tribune for possessing "one of the most alluring voices in jazz." On the other, she is a three-time ASCAP award-winning songwriter with over 200 compositions to her name, and was the recent award recipient in the jazz composers category presented by the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs. A serious musician from Detroit, she began singing and arranging background vocals for producer Don Was in the early eighties, acquiring over 35 credits to her name. As a lead vocalist she recorded for both Cararre (Sony) and Quality Records then toured with Was/Not Was. By the early nineties, her musical taste in R&B evolved to straight ahead Jazz. Stints with the JC Heard and Nelson Riddle Orchestras led to a 1996 release of All In A Dreams Work (Schoolkids Records), an impressive debut featuring a first rate collection of nine originals and a cover of Miles' Four.

Reported by over 250 Jazz stations, she reached the top 20 in the Gavin. Her 2002 release of Mood Swings (Chiaroscuro Records), features seven catchy original compo-sitions written with the jazz masters in mind, and a distinctive choice of cover material such as a sultry version of Jimi Hendrix's "Foxey Lady" and the rarely performed television theme song "Melancholy Serenade" written by the great one himself; Jackie Gleason. Mood Swings continues to bring Kosins recognition and success at the national level.
