What do you say in English when someone invites you?

Here are some common expressions you can use when making or responding toinvitations

Inviting:

Do you want to go to the movies tonight?

Would you like to go to the theatre tomorrow?

Would you be interested in going to the the stadium next Sunday?

How do you fancy going to the the restaurant for dinner?

How about going to the movies?

Care to come over for lunch?

I was just wondering if you would like to come over for a drink.

We'd be delighted to have you over for my birthday party.

Accepting invitations:

  Sure. What time?

  I'd love to, thanks.

That's very kind of you, thanks.

  That sounds lovely, thank you.

What a great idea, thank you.

Sure. When should I be there?

Declining invitations:

  I can't. I have to work.

This evening is no good. I have an appointment.

I'm busy tomorrow. Can I take a rain check* on that?

That's very kind of you, but actually I'm doing something else this afternoon.

Well, I'd love to, but I'm already going out to the restaurant.

I'm really sorry, but I've got something else on.

I really don't think I can - I'm supposed to be doing something else.

(*rain check: used to tell someone that you cannot accept invitations now, but would

like to do so at a later time:)

Phil, England

What are my plans for tonight? My plans for tonight are watching movies. I

live in a guest house with lots of different nationality people and tonightthere is a movie night planned, so I think I will watch it. I don't have muchmoney, so staying in is definitely a good idea for me.

Adrienne, The United States What are my plans for the evening? Well, tonight I'm going to go out with afriend for dinner and then afterwards, we're planning to go see a bluegrassband. It's kind of interesting kind of music, not very common, and we'regonna listen to the band and hopefully we'll get to sing with them too. It

might be fun.

Mark, England What are my plans for tonight? Well, first of all, I'm going to have dinnerwith my wife probably in a few hours, and then hopefully we'll go to a localbar. I need to meet a friend of mine. We need to chat about a little bit ofbusiness.

Simone, Sweden I'm really tired today because I was doing stuff yesterday so today I'm just

gonna relax with my friends and watch a movie. I don't know which onereally but something not too difficult.

Conrad, The United States What am I doing tonight? Well, it's a Friday night so I've got some timebecause my wife is in California and I think I'm gonna make some Mexicanfood which is a very popular food in California with all of the Mexicans wholive there, and I'll probably make some burritos with salsa.

Barbara, Australia

What are my plans for tonight? Well, I think I'm going to watch a DVD andI'm going to open a bottle of wine, sit back and relax and enjoy the movie - easy after a long, hard days work.

3/ READING:

My friend Ben and I have been waiting a month to see our favorite band in concert.

This was the night. We were so excited. In a small venue like the Whiskey, therewouldn't be a bad seat in the house.

So, we get to the Whiskey really early to find street parking and snagged a spotabout four blocks away. Then, we got in line which was already about 20 deep. Therewere two bouncers outside of the bar and they weren't letting anybody in yet. Wewaited and waited in line. Finally, the line started to move. When we got tothe head of it, one of the bouncers checked our tickets and one of the otheremployees of the club put a wrist band on each of us. I guess this was to let theemployees in the bar know that we belonged there and we weren't crashing theparty.

Anyway, we got inside and tried to get as close to the stage as possible. There werealready a bunch of people standing in front of the stage in a special ropedoff  section. These were probably VIPs or maybe they were groupies. Who knows? Anyway, I just know that security wasn't letting anyone get that close.

Before too long, people started to cheer and I knew that the opening act was aboutto come on. This was a band I'd never heard of before so I wasn't that excited to hearthem. They did come out and they started playing a set. I couldn't believe it. Theywere really horrible. The people standing next to Ben and me started booing theband. Other people started throwing things on the stage, like their drinks and their

food. After a little while, the booing got so loud, you could hardly hear the band. Finally, they finished their song and left the stage.

The concert-goers were pretty rowdy by this time. Some were yelling, others weregetting up on top of the bar and dancing. Just when I thought there was going tobe riot, someone got on the microphone and started to introduce the headliningband. All of a sudden, everybody calmed down and started cheering. The band cameon stage and started their first number . Then, the room was full of happy campers.Ben and I were both a little nervous for a second there. We didn't know if things weregoing to get out of hand. But when the band started to play, we knew that everythingwould be ok. This was turning out to be a great night, just like we imagined.

4/ WRITING:

Backed by a superb group of dancers and excellent musicians - drummer"Slam" did a fantastic drum solo during one of Britney's costume changes– the star wowed the crowd.

Her dancing and singing were brilliant and she made about six costumechanges - my favorite was a silvery dressing gown with a huge train like awedding dress.

There were also fireworks, tickertape and altogether it was a great show.

There was then a 30-minute gap before the Queen of Pop - she didactually sit on a throne at one stage in the show - finally appeared.

Making a stage entrance in a floating "spaceship", she opened the showwith Crazy (one of my Dad's favorites, though he might not admit it whichreally got things going.

The 12,000 capacity crowd - there were lots of girls of my age but alsoquite a few men on their own! - went wild as Britney tore into hit after hit.

At one point she took a break and four contestants fought it out on stagefor the right to meet her and have their photograph taken with her.

The winner was a boy from Essex who had to "walk like a chicken" to winthe contest.

Then Britney was back into the show, with Born To Make You Happy,Lucky, I Can't Get No Satisfaction and several slower ballads.

But the 80-minute show was rounded off with the song which made her a

star in the first place - Baby, One More Time.

When she and the band disappeared I thought it was all over but thecrowd stayed in place and made more noise, chanting "Britney".

So she came back and played Oops...I Did It Again, which was verydramatic with Britney finally disappearing in a burst of fire.

All in all it was a really cool show and the crowd loved it - I know I did andI think my Dad did too.
