The 2019 IHIMA
Annual Meeting
Recap
By Lisa DesNoyers, MPH, RHIA, SME, Annual Meeting Committee Chair
New Venue, many new speakers, tons of fantastic food and a great turn out of HIM
Professionals! As we are all slowing down, trying to recover from the conference and then
three days of catching up on the 300 emails that came in while we decided to focus on our
conference I just wanted to take a moment and remind you, what a great conference!! As
the Annual Meeting Chair, I want to Thank You for coming out to make it a success. We
had many people come up to the IHIMA table and let us know that the food (especially the
mashed potatoes) were excellent. The Exhibitor Reception had triple the turnout from the
prior two years due to the seating for everyone, music, and food. Next year we hope to
make it more amazing now that we know everyone is interested. There were excellent
questions throughout the day to the speakers, and many of the speakers asked if they could
come back and speak on more topics. We sincerely hope that this new venue is to your
liking, we have renewed the Embassy contract for next year already to make sure that we
can continue to grow with the number of guests that seem to be coming to the conference.
Keep your eyes out; you should have received an email with the survey and we need your
feedback. Once you fill it out you will get the link to your CEU’s. Also, we will be opening
the registration around July 1 this year for special pricing for Exhibitors, Sponsors, and
Members VIP registration! Get in early for the Annual Meeting April 20-21, 2020!! We will
see you at the Embassy Suites and Conference Center Noblesville, 13700 Conference Center
Drive, Noblesville, IN 46060. #IHIMA19

IHIMA’s Student Liaison Update on Mentoring at Annual Meeting By Yvonne Parker, IHIMA Student Liaison
The IHIMA Annual Meeting had a mentor program that paired current students with
mentors. Mentors, who are currently working in the Health Information Management field,
had the opportunity to give insight about the field to the mentees. This insight could be tips
such as; how to land a job, help steer students into a specialty they may be interested in,
give students perspective on their day to day activities at their job, etc. Anyone could
volunteer during registration to be a mentor and meet with a student at the Annual
meeting; this helped the students increase their networking skills and build friendships.

AHIMA’s Advocacy Summit and Hill Day – March 25-26, 2019 By Julie Stiers, MBA, RHIA, Legislative Committee Co-Chair
It was a privilege and honor for myself and my colleagues to represent our Indiana
component state association (CSA) at the AHIMA Advocacy Summit in Washington DC in
March. We were able to meet with Senator Todd Young during a coffee gathering and
personally discuss with him our four areas of concern from AHIMA: Patient Matching;
Encourage Note Sharing with Patients in Real Time; Extending the HIPAA Individual Right
of Access to Non-Covered Entities (NCEs); and Align HIPAA ‘Right of Access’ with ONC
Health IT Certification Functionality. We also met with staff from the offices of
Representative Susan Brooks and Representative Jackie Walorski to share these topics and
educate them on the health information profession. All of the legislators and the legislative
staff were interested in learning more about all the topics and how these topics would
impact their constituents in their districts. After the discussion with each legislator and/or
their staff, packets with more information was provided for further review.
One of the proudest moments we had was during the General Session on Monday, when
Lauren Riplinger, JD, Senior Director, Federal Relations at AHIMA, made a special
announcement congratulating IHIMA on their grass roots efforts that have been grown in
our state. It was mentioned that we had recently had our own Hill Day in the state of
Indiana and she was encouraging other CSA’s to start those efforts. When she first called out
the CSA from Indiana, we all thought we were in trouble. But, in fact, our hard work across
the state by the membership to learn more about Advocacy has certainly paid off.
#HIMAdvocate
Just a reminder – mark on your calendar, March 17, 2020 for our next “Hill” Day at the
Indiana State Capitol. We hope to see you there! #IHIMAAdvocate
