IHC Marine & Offshore: Fuel purification, MGO and MDO

Main problems in fuel systems... Particles contamination: • Erosion • Sand blasting • Grinding
Water contaminations: •Corrosion: There is a significant problem with water in fuel oil. Water produces abrasive rust which wears on surfaces, block clearances and break off to damage moving parts.
•Cavitations in fuel pumps: Water droplets collapse under the pressure in the pump, producing high forces which “eats away” the pump wheels
•Wear on injectors: the high velocity through injectors creates “blasting” with water droplets and the high pressure make water implosions (cavitation) resulting in high wear rates
•Microbial Growth: Negative consequences include rancid foul odours, human health problems, biomass slimes, foaming and clogging of fuel filters and small passages

MV Union Gold, review after 18 months of operation (July2011): CJC Separator PTU1, filter insert change on Jan2011 after 12 months of operation. Average usage of fuel on board is 25.000 liters per 2 trips (10/11days). Estimated amount of fuel pumped through the CJC unit in one year= 365/11 x 25.000L= 829.545L ≈ 800m³. Microbial growth in fuel tanks (diesel bugs) ...
Bacteria colonies settling in the in-line filters. Main cause of microbial growth: water in tanks habitat.
