Message from the Southeast Regional Symposium Chair

Welcome to the Southeast Regional Symposium on ReconnectingVulnerableCommunities Before, During and After a disaster sponsored by the Intercul-

tural Cancer Council.

Like America, Nashville is a diverse community.We come from different ethnicgroups, religions, socioeconomic status, educational background, gender, familytype, and physical condition. However in disasters we are all “just humans.”We allhave our humanity and need to survive at the highest possible level as a basic con-nector.

There was a time when we only heard of disasters after the fact, by word of mouthunless they happened to us. However, the explosion of media and technology per-mits us to see disasters as they take place anywhere in the world.We do not knowwhat form the next disaster will take: floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes,terror attacks, nuclear accidents, chemical mishaps, or some yet unknown occur-rence. We must work collectively to identify multiple resources right in reach in thiscommunity that can and must be harnessed for the common good. You are invitedto help us frame and initiate an alliance to protect ourselves, our families, and frag-ile neighbors and friends. Let us come together, listen, think, share, plan and act.Right now we are all vulnerable. There is no reason to remain so.

The needs of vulnerable populations are intensified by disasters. Medical andmental health requirements including prescriptive drugs may outweigh

other pressing and critical needs such as employment, housing, and food secu-rity. Working together as a community, we can provide the necessary informa-tion and infrastructure to address the needs and concerns of vulnerablepopulations in Nashville before, during, and after a disaster. Through disasterpreparation, training, and knowledge of community resources, individuals andfamilies can return to stability as quickly as possible.

As a community, we must examine health disparities and social determinantsand include our findings in a holistic approach that we develop in responding tothe impact of a disaster on personal and community health.

We look forward to starting the conversation about disaster planning for allcommunities and persons.

Welcome to the Intercultural Cancer Council Regional Symposium. This is atimely subject as we witness the recent devastation in the south, mid-west and

northeast during recent tornadoes and floods and remember Katrina, Rita and othernatural disasters. We are bringing together community-based, faith-based, the busi-ness community and disaster management organizations to encourage and mobi-lize the Nashville community to establish and sustain emergency disasterpreparedness. “This meeting will connect people, community and Nashville serviceorganizations to build knowledge, skills and resources from within the communityto promote resiliency in the face of future disasters.

The Intercultural Cancer Council (ICC) promotes policies, programs, partnerships andresearch to eliminate the unequal burden of cancer among racial and ethnic minori-ties and the medically underserved. We are pleased to join hands with our Nashvillepartners to ensure that within the holistic approach to disaster management.

The Intercultural Cancer Council (ICC) continues to advocate for the plightof people who do not have access to quality health care following a disas-

ter, nor the knowledge on how to prepare themselves and family for disasterto meet their health needs. ICC works to inspire partners to join our efforts tomake the elimination of health disparities a reality and to ensure the continu-ation of health care following a disaster. As we come together these next threedays, I can only believe that these days will bring together all communities tobegin the process of partnering and working together to bring about thechange regardless of color, gender, age, ethnicity, religion or political affilia-tion on the matter of disaster preparedness and management. In the past, ourcommunities have been resilient in the face of adversity and will continue todo so. We must begin to share our experiences and resources to overcomethese difficulties we face in disaster.

We look forward to continuing to work with the Nashville community and hopethat this symposium will help to mobilize vulnerable communities to meet thechallenge of establishing and sustaining a community-based alliance on disas-ter preparedness.
