Influences of Social Isolation

• People who are socially isolated lack family and close friends this affects development. People who are socially isolated can suffer mental health issues.

• First relationships usually last for life and form the basis for their later life. Early attachments provide security and stability, which provide the child with the confidence to develop and explore the world.

• The School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme (SFVS)• This was introduced in 2004, as part of the 5 A Day

programme, when all children in Key Stage 1 were given a free piece of fruit or vegetable every day.

• Food4Life• This is part of the Change4Life programme begun in

2009 by the Department of Health. Its aim is to tackle the issue of obesity.

• Free school meals• Many children have been entitled to free school

meals if their parents have been on benefits; recently the Government has announced that there will be free school meals for all children in Key Stage 1 from September 2014.

Tesco offers free fruit for kids as part of healthy eating push

• Tesco will offer children free fruit while their parents are shopping in store, as a ‘little help’ for kids to eat more healthily.

• 800 stores across the UK take part which includes Fareham. On average children only eat 3 portions of fruit a day.

• In 2014 Tesco became the first major retailer to remove sweets and chocolates from its checkouts across all store formats, including smaller convenience stores.
