RE: Summer 08 Missions with the Center for Student Missions (CSM)

    Dear Students & Parents,

You hold in your hands a packet of information detailing this summers missions opportunity forthe students of North Hills Church. May you be empowered as you prayerfully considerparticipating in a trip this Summer.

Both missions trips the Jr. High trip to urban Los Angeles, and the High School trip to urban SanFrancisco will be run in conjunction with the Center for Student Missions . CSM is a Christianorganization, whose missions is to provide an effective urban ministry experience that

transforms lives, influences churches and communities, and honors Christ . I invite you tocheck out the CSM website ( www.csm.org ), as well as to read in this packet about what the week with CSM will look like for our group.

Our goal at North Hills Youth is to continually challenge our students to be the hands and feet of Jesus in the world. We want them to recognize that their choice to follow Jesus involves them inhis call to love the widows, orphans and oppressed . That is his heart. And we want our studentsto develop similar kinds of passion for the poor, homeless and marginalized. With this in mind, itmay be helpful for you to understand that this is a very service-oriented trip . CSM provides allthe groundwork because they have a permanent presence within the city. Our intention is to comealongside them and make ourselves available to be used in whatever capacity (from prayer-walking parts of the city, to running a VBS at an after school program, to serving food at a soupkitchen, etc.). We are praying for God-type moments of interaction with people who need to knowthe love of Jesus.

We will be living in the city experiencing firsthand the sights, sounds, smells, and textures of urban life. We will also be eating at local ethnic restaurants and cafes, getting a taste for theuniqueness of different cultures. Well also be learning about the city what its really like(positives as well as negatives), who lives there, the issues and problems within the city, whatGod is doing to foster and further His Kingdom in the city through the indigenous local churches, homeless shelters, neighborhood centers, and other organizations that operate on the front lines of urban ministry.

Your next step: read through this packet and begin to pray about your involvement. Applicationsare due on Sunday, February 17. After all applications have been submitted, students will beasked to participate in a short, personal interview with the team leaders. Should you have andquestions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

    Blessings,

San Francisco draws visitors and residents from all over the world to take in its beautiful architecture, incredibleviews, and diverse culture. Mention The City by the Bay and people think of Fishermans Wharf, the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood, Alcatraz, the 49ers football team & the Giants baseball team, and cable cars.

The romance that draws people to the city can turn into despair and pain for many. The homeless populationgrows daily, as outrageous housing costs box even middle class families out of the housing market. Thousandsof people live a paycheck away from the streets. ..

Looking through Jesus eyes at the people and issuesthat make up San Francisco, we see great hope for

the future of San Francisco and her people. Jesus isalive and well in the city! Both small and large

organizations, church communities, and followersof Christ seek daily to alleviate the suffering and

shine Gods light in very dark places.

? DID YOU KNOW THAT... Between 6,000 and 15,000 people in San Francisco are homeless, a number thathas decreased in recent years. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, SanFrancisco has the highest per capita homeless population in the US. The children attending San Francisco public schools speak more than seventylanguages.INSIGHTS ON THE CITY

a WORD about the $599 pr ice:Since this is a missions trip , we want our students to embrace their role as a missionary . And justlike regular missionaries, we will be encouraging students to 1) Raise support from family andfriends, and 2) Make personal sacrifices. It is perfectly appropriate for students to save moneygiven for birthdays, or graduation, or what theyve earned from jobs they keep, etc. Plus, Lettersof Support can be sent to family and friends (outside of NHC), inviting them to be a part of how Godhas called and is using our students. More information about this will be discussed after the teamhas been chosen. If you have any questions or concerns, please talk to Brenton.

What is The Center for Student Missions? information for parents about CSM:

CSM provides ministry opportunities to serve the worlds fastest growing mission field. With thepopulation explosion in and around the worlds urban centers, cities are quickly becoming the worldslargest (and most complex) mission field. CSM provides groups an opportunity to serve through local

ministries that have a year-round presence in their specific communities.

CSM handles the details, you get to serve. As a leader or group member you will be joined by one ofCSMs resident staff on your trip. They handle the specific details (from directions to meals) while youhave the opportunity to wholeheartedly serve.

CSM provides a long-lasting experience during a short-term trip. CSM staff lives year-round in the citythey serve. Theyve formed relationships with the ministries we partner with and you become the vital link asthese ministries depend on the volunteers CSM provides to remain a vibrant presence in their communities.

CSMs service projects are working with people. When serving in the urban center with CSM you will

be coming alongside ministries that focus on serving people. Whether youre serving food at a homelessshelter or playing with children at an after-school program, you will be cultivating relationships throughoutyour entire trip.

CSM allows you to not just serve the city, but to learn about who you are serving. By participatingwith CSM you will have many opportunities to learn about just who you are serving. By becoming betterinformed we can better know the needs of the city and, in turn, learn where we can best serve theindividuals in the city.

CSM provides training and follow up to all of its groups. We believe that both pre- and post-trip training arecrucial not only for the trip to run smoothly, but that participants would be personally changed as they serve.

CSM provides in-depth training materials for both before and after your time of service, free of charge.

CSM allows participants to experience the rich cultures that make up the city. Groups have theopportunity to serve at ministry sites and eat at different ethnic restaurants that expose them to themultitude of cultures that make up the city. Experience brings understanding.

CSM provides an experience that changes the trip participant and the people being served. Ourgoal is for each person who serves with CSM to leave not only more aware of the needs and issues of thecity, but also with a heart to serve those that are lost and less fortunate. Awareness brings empathy.

CSM Statement of Faith :: We believe the Bible to be the inspired, the only infallible, authoritative Word of God. there is one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His vicarious andatoning death through His shed blood, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand of the Father and inHis personal return in power and glory. that for the salvation of lost and sinful people regeneration by the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential. in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit by whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a godly life. in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost; the saved unto the resurrection of life and the lost unto theresurrection of damnation. in the spiritual unity of believers in our Lord Jesus Christ.
