summertime: With record temperatures upon us, it is time to

hit the cool water of your local recreation center pool! Come

enjoy some downtime at one of our fantastic facilities and

bring the family! Of course, don’t miss the 4th of July parade this year as we celebrate

our nation’s freedom! This year we have the honor of three HRCA employees that

are WWII veterans as our grand marshals! Come out and honor them and all of our

veterans for their service.

Fun, Fun, Fun Activities: The “dog days of summer” don’t exist in Highlands Ranch! We

always have a variety of events to choose from for your family fun. Remember to visit

our Farmers’ and street market every sunday at our Town Center south. Lots of great

produce from local farmers can be purchased as well as other items for your home

and garden. Don’t forget that every Thursday evening of July, HRCA hosts the summer

Concert series at Highland Heritage Regional Park. This month we are also hosting our

Annual Elk Hunting Banquet on July 26 at southridge Recreation Center. This event

helps raise money for our programs in the Backcountry and is a lot of fun! Last but

not least, remember to come out on July 26, from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. for Culture on the

green featuring swing Je T’aime at Civic green Park. Enjoy music and culture under the

beautiful Colorado sky!

5-Year Plan: The Board of Directors, as you recall, have met on the 5-year plan

and established several categories in which we are to build our foundation for the

future. I have taken their specific over-arching tasks and brought them back to the

staff Leadership Team. The Leadership Team has put a significant amount of material

together and returned it to the Board for further discussion and action. The 5-year

plan is a dynamic document and even though it is not in a completed form, we are

continuing to move on elements of it in real-time. much of what we look at in this year’s

budget will have their origin in the 5-year plan.

Budget: HRCA staff and the Board of Directors have been in earnest, to work on

the annual budget for our organization. Please check out our calendar to see if there

is a meeting you would like to attend and become informed on where your dollars

are going. We strive to be transparent in everything we do in this organization and

welcome your input throughout the year!

COmmuNITYInews Hot WeatHer is Here

summer has arrived and with it, warm temperatures causing

stress on landscaping. As a reminder to all, regular mowing,

trimming, watering, and weed control are a part of landscape

maintenance that not only keeps your lawn healthy, but also

keeps the neighborhoods looking good. You should be able

to achieve acceptable results and stay within your monthly

water budget. Be water wise and don’t irrigate between 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

recent storms

As we are all aware, Colorado is famous for storms that can cause damage to just

about everything in its path. Just a reminder, prior to starting work to replace damaged

roofing, paint, siding, etc. approval is required for the exterior improvement from the

Highlands Ranch Community Association. The appropriate architectural request form

can be found at www.HRCAonline.org/forms. If you have any questions regarding the

process, please call the HRCA at 303-471-8821.

trasH/recycling neWs When the HRCA began the preferred-provider opt-in trash program, the goal was to

provide valuable service at a lower cost while fulfilling one of the

board’s strategic objectives: Championing environmental stewardship

and sustainability.

Three years later, the community continues to benefit from the

program with our preferred-provider Pro Disposal. By opting in, Highlands Ranch

home owners receive significant savings. For no additional fee, Pro Disposal provides

recycling pick-up and their Highlands Ranch customers recycle 36% of their trash.

Another environmental benefit is the decrease in truck traffic which reduces emissions

and less wear and tear on streets.

What are the options for recycling? The opt-in program includes bi-weekly single-

stream recycling (all recyclables for collection are mixed but kept separate from other

waste). Beginning July 1, 2013, trash services will no longer accept consumer

electronics waste as a result of the Electronic Recycling Jobs Act. To find out how this

change affects you, how to protect your data, visit: www.colorado.gov/cdphe/ewaste

and bring your old electronics to the HRCA’s Computer & Electronics Recycling and

Paper shredding Event on september 28 in Town Center.

pool safety

Help keep your kids safe

Know your child’s limitations -

If they are not a strong swimmer, have

them wear a Coast guard approved

Personal Floatation Device, All the HRCA

Recreation Centers have Coast guard

approved Type II life jackets at their

facilities for you to check out while you

enjoy the pools.

Have them take breaks -

The HRCA facilities clear the pools each

hour; use this time to assess your child’s

energy level.

set boundaries -

Let your children know what is ‘off limits’

at the pool before getting in. For example

the deep end, the big slide, and the

diving boards. Know where your child is at

all times.

Keep your child at arm’s reach at

all times -

This is the greatest level of protection you

can provide your child when at the pool.

In addition, you are having some great

quality time with your child.

By using these simple tips, you can assist

the lifeguards in keeping the pools safe for

everyone throughout the summer season.
