How Hospice Beat the Winter Blues For the second year in a row a local farmer selected Hospice of Orleans to receive a $2,500 donation from America’s Farmers Grow Communities, a Monsanto Fund. Charles Mathes of Mathes Farms in Holley, and Jeff Cunningham, Monsanto’s Northeast Business Manager, kicked off the Hospice Beat the Winter Blues event at Leonard Oakes Estate Winery in Medina by presenting Nyla Gaylord, Director of Development, with a check for $2,500. “Hospice has helped a number of people in my family and I’m happy to help them,” said Charles Mathes as he and Jeff Cunningham presented the large ceremonial check. Jeff Cunningham explained that “This gift is Monsanto’s way of supporting the local communities in which we sell seeds and other agricultural products to local farmers.” Hospice of Orleans will use this gift to help fund costs associated with renovating a room at the main office for use by the bereavement group. Renovations will make the room look like a comfortable living room where there is ample space for group members to gather in an inviting atmosphere. A sell-out crowd Beat the Winter Blues and enjoyed hors d’oeuves from Zambistro Catering and improvisational jazz and blues by Doug Egling on winds and Mike Putman on guitars. A surprise guest, Kate Egling, sang some old blues tunes accompanied by Doug and Mike. The group is known locally for their regular performances with jazz, blues, and jazz fusion bands at the Dinosaur Grill in Rochester and local events. The basket raffle featured donations from Tim Hortons, Auto Zone, The Golden Comb, The Soap Cottage, Pudgies Vegetables, Pullman Universalist Church, Automotive Solutions, Rt 104 Redemption, ARC of Orleans Auto Detailing and Bill Blackburn. Leonard Oakes Estate Winery, represented by brother and sister duo Wendy Oakes Wilson and Darrel Oakes, served as hosts of the event and provided the first glass of Blanc d’Orleans wine free. Since 2013, for every bottle of their white wine, Blanc d’Orleans sold, $1. 00 goes to Hospice of Orleans, the county’s only licensed provider of comprehensive end-of-life care. According to Mary Anne Fischer, Executive Director, this first time event was a sell-out and a huge success. “We hope to hold a similar event next year. We are very grateful for the support of the community, for our entertainers, donors, caterers, and the Oakes family for their long term support of Hospice of Orleans with their signature wine Blanc d’ Orleans.”

We at Hospice

of Orleans are

happy to put

this long cold

winter behind

us!

Hospice of

Orleans is

hosting a

number of Spring and Summer events

that you won’t want to miss. Our

The launch of our new Pet Peace of Mind® program has attracted a great deal of interest

and support in the community, even from former residents.

A colleague of mine stopped by my office recently to tell me that a friend of her

daughter who used to live in Orleans County was making out her will and wanted to

leave money for an animal welfare group in this area. Of course, the new Hospice Pet

Peace of Mind ®program, recently featured in the news, came up in their discussion.

My colleague told her daughter and her friend to contact me for more information on the

program. To everyone’s surprise, the potential donor is my third cousin who now lives

in the mountains of Northern New York!! She is not a rich woman by any means but

she wants to make sure that the organizations and causes she feels strongly about can

continue even after she is gone.

Not only is she going to leave Hospice of Orleans in her will but she is making contact

with the hospice organization in the North County to see if they want to apply for a Pet

Peace of Mind® program. She has a cousin (her first cousin, my third cousin) who is

involved in animal rescue organizations. We think she might want to help too.

Wonderful things happen when we share the good news of what is going on with

Hospice of Orleans. That is why we publish this newsletter! I hope that you too will

share information about our local hospice, think about how you can support hospice,

and encourage others to support our work either as a volunteer or donor.

On Giving Tuesday, December 2, 2014, $597.60 was donated on-line. In keeping with the spirit of Giving Tuesday, David Fink, Plant Manager of Saint-Gobain ADFORS in Albion and the Director of Human Resources, Donna Atkinson, surprised Hospice of Orleans with a $1,100 donation. Saint-Gobain is the world's largest building materials company. Its manufacturing facility in Albion employs 200 plus people. Donations made by employees are matched dollar for dollar by the company.

room for more golfers! We have

some wonderful prizes and raffle items

such as half-day Charter Fishing Tours

and wooden lawn furniture. I hope

to see you at one or all of our

FUNdraising events!

Our Memorial Garden is in full bloom. Stop by and

see it! Our many volunteers have been busy weeding

and mulching and it looks lovely. There are benches

and a sparkling water fountain – a perfect place to

chat or spend time alone in reflection. The walk

way that leads to the garden has some new memorial

bricks. Memorial bricks are still available and may be

inscribed with a personal message of remembrance or

tribute. One of my favorites reads:

“I’d like the memory of me to be a

happy one.”

The garden is teaming with birds

and other wildlife. Volunteers and

staff spotted this fawn grazing in

back of the Martin-Linsen

Residence and shared this photo with us.

As you can see from the feature story in this

newsletter, we are truly excited to launch the Pet

coverage has been unprecedented. This quote posted

Surprise

Gifts!

Notes from Nyla - Director of Development and Community Relations

Annual Meeting

I was surprised to receive a

package in the mail from one of

our faithful out-of-town

supporters. I don’t know him

personally, so I was particularly

touched to receive his note and

the book Too Soon to Say

Goodbye by Art Buchwald. In

this book Buchwald writes of

his experiences as a hospice

patient. He starts with

saying: “What started out the

worst of times ended up the

best of times.” In his typical humorous fashion, he writes

of his experience with serious illness and reflects on his life

while in a hospice residence. Like many people who forgo

treatment, Art lived longer than expected – so, he decided

to write a book about his experience. His book offers

many insights into hospice from the point of view of the

patient. Let me know if you would like to borrow my

copy. Let’s make this a surprise gift that keeps on giving.

Concerning trends highlighted

Executive Director Mary Anne Fischer addressed a crowd of around a hundred at the Hospice of Orleans annual meeting April 30th at the Medina United Methodist Church. In her remarks she pointed out some concerning trends in utilization of Hospice services. “While 75% of those referred were admitted to care, 31% reached out to us too late.” She noted that “Most people are admitted to Hospice services on the same day or within 24 hours of a referral. Clearly, more people could benefit from Hospice services if they were referred earlier.”

Ms. Fischer called on Hospice volunteers and supporters to help educate our community. “Hospice is not about giving up on your loved one. It is about giving TO them.” She cited a new study that shows that Hospice care not only improves the quality of life but also the length of life. “On average, patients lived 29 days longer on hospice than those with the same disease who didn’t have hospice services.”

In her remarks, she noted that it was of concern that in 2014 “14% of those referred, but not admitted, to hospice care were routed to futile efforts at rehabilitation in nursing homes where they subsequently died.” She also cautioned that we as a community need to be very wary of the recent push to legalize

physician assisted suicide. “I could talk at length on this topic, but the important point I want to make is that Hospice is the answer! Hospice is the answer for anyone who is contemplating ending their life because of a terminal health issue…make sure your loved ones and friends know how important the hospice choice is!

Agency Accomplishments

Ms. Fisher detailed key accomplishments of 2014. These included implementing changes in employee medical and dental coverage, evaluation of the agency’s cost structure and saving over $350 in postage alone with increased use of email and online volunteer scheduling. “Hospice of Orleans has grown from an average daily census of 5 to 17.”

Finance Director Joel Allen reviewed the 2014 Budget Expenses for the agency and pointed out that more than 90% of the expenses billed for patient services go to direct patient care. He noted that patient costs for the Martin-Linsin Residence are in line with budget projections. While there has been a slight decrease in home care, all other expenses and revenue projections were on target for 2014.

Nyla Gaylord, Director of Development and Community Relations, reported on past and upcoming events and thanked Wendy Wilson of Leonard Oakes Estate Winery for her support in initiating a new fundraising event at the Winery, “Beat the Winter Blues.” She noted that in the future Hospice will be producing a screening tool “What Help Do You Need?” to better assist

people to identify the need for in-home support, palliative care and hospice services. The agency will continue to look for new opportunities to raise funds through events and grant seeking, as well as promoting new financial giving options that fall outside of probate and wills.

Agency priorities for 2015 include:

- implementing the new Pet Peace of Mind® program

- strengthening the infrastructure of the agency to ensure its long term viability,

- investigating a group purchasing program with other area hospice programs,

- continuing to educate our community about the benefits of hospice.

Volunteer Recognition

At the Hospice Annual Meeting, Mary Anne Fischer applauded the work of the Hospice volunteers and reported that in 2014, more than 150 volunteers contributed over 6,800 hours to the Hospice mission of providing comfort, compassion and expertise to Orleans County residents facing serious illness. She attributed a cost savings of over $110,000 last year to volunteer involvement.

Don Algeo 2014 Volunteer of the Year

Volunteer Coordinator Christine Fancher noted that “Don is always willing to help. He volunteers at the Residence four or more hours a week and goes to a patient’s home

Hospice is the answer for anyone who is contemplating ending their life because of a terminal health issue…make sure your loved ones and friends know how important the hospice choice is!

and prepares meals twice a week.” Algeo also serves on the Hospice of Orleans Board of Directors.

Jerome Pawlak received the

Mary Janet Sahukar Award, named for Hospice of Orleans’ founding

director. The award recognizes a community member who understands, embraces and supports the organization’s mission in sacrificial ways. “Jerome always says ‘yes’ when we ask if we can sell bouquets at his Save-a-Lot Stores or ask for any other assistance.” said Mary Anne Fischer as she presented the award. Jerome told the group that his father had been a supporter of Hospice since its inception and that he is proud to carry on that tradition.

Merrill Grinnell Funeral Home received the

Hospice Business/Civic Award for their role in developing and supporting the Classic Car Show for the past two years.

A Special Recognition Award was presented

to Leonard Oakes Estate Winery for their many contributions to fundraising for Hospice. Wendy Wilson accepted the award for the Winery. Her voice filled with emotion, as she said “I can’t thank Hospice enough for taking care of one of our long time, much loved employees this past year. Two of our employees are receiving services now. Hospice staff has been incredible! Hospice has been near and dear to our family and we are happy to support them in any way we can.”

John Girvin was honored for completion of his term on the Hospice of Orleans Board of Directors.

New Directors Welcomed to the Board

Lynn Short, former owner of Arjuna Florist, and Pamela Reamer, professor of Nursing at SUNY Brockport, were elected to serve two year terms on the Board of Directors. The Board had previously elected Dennis Piedimonte, owner of JP’s Farm Market in Holley, to a three year term.

Ceil Feldman, a Hospice Volunteer for more than 20 years, received a “gag” gift of a bag of flour in recognition of many gifts of baked goods to the staff and volunteers.

Our volunteers are the heart of Hospice – Neighbors helping neighbors!

Channel 8 News Rochester Visits Hospice

for story on Pet Peace of Mind® program

Patrick Kelly, a reporter with Channel 8 News

Rochester, visited Hospice of Orleans for several hours

Thursday, April 2nd to learn more about the new Pet Peace

of Mind® program. Fellow reporter Connie Howard had

been attracted to the story of Denzel the long-haired

dachshund, who was adopted by Hospice Nurse Donna

Coble, who had cared for his late owner. Ms. Howard

owns two dachshunds and empathized with the story of

the hospice patient who had no one to take his beloved

Denzel. Kelly, also a dog lover, was interested in learning

about the new Pet Peace of Mind® program for hospice

patients, having experienced hospice services with his

mother. “It was an easy choice between covering a trial

and going to Albion to learn about Pet Peace of Mind® and

interview a dog owner.”

Kelly, in his interview with Mary Anne Fischer,

Executive Director, learned of several situations where

hospice nurses were confronted with the plight of what to

do with pet companions after a patient had passed. “We

were so concerned about pet owners in hospice care and

their pets that we

searched for funding

to address this issue

and came across the

Pet Peace of Mind®

program.” Fischer

explained. “This

program will help us

formalize and

structure what we have been doing just because it needed

to be done. ”

Donna Coble shared with him the story of how she felt

compelled to adopt Denzel event though she already had

two dogs. She explained that for so many people their

& Palliative Care

We are very appreciative of the cards and notes that family

members send us. Many are very personal and touch us

deeply. Mr. Fisher gave us permission to share the letter

below.

pets are their whole life. Coble pointed out that taking

Denzel did more for her than anyone could imagine. “I

feel that bringing Denzel to the Hospice Residence to visit

his owner was a way to teach my 11 year old daughter

Julie to respect and value people nearing the end of their

life. I think that is

important.”

In addition to

working at Hospice,

Coble works nights at a

hospital in Rochester.

“I’ve only had about an

hour and half of sleep,”

she explained to Kelly,

“but I’m here to support Hospice and tell Denzel’s story so

that more people can get help with their pets when they

can’t take care of them. Hospice is so so important to me.

I’ve lost a lot of loved ones and I feel it is a privilege to

work with people as they near the end of their lives. It is a

real privilege, and I’m happy I can help as a nurse and

happy to help Denzel’s owner have peace of mind

knowing that his beloved

dog would have a good

home on a farm where he

was loved.”

Pet Peace of Mind®

is a national program

developed and funded by

the Banfield Charitable

Trust. Hospice of Orleans is

only the second hospice to

start the program in New

York State. The interview may be viewed online at
