Who thought up the idea of April Fools’ Day and why do we pull pranks like putting salt in the sugar bowl? There are a number of theories, ranging from the mythological to the political, but no hard historical evidence of the tradition’s origins.

The most popular theory refers to a convoluted calendar change during 16th century French reforms. King Charles IX moved the start of the year from the end of March to January 1, so people played pranks on those who still celebrated on April 1. Anthropologists say the tradition is most likely a rite of spring, a festive day when social rules can be flouted and a certain amount of mischief is allowed as we return to the world after winter.
