Passion of Christ Strengthen Me
First Thessalonians 5: 16-18: (USCCB Bible)
“Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing.
In all circumstances give thanks, for this is
the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.”
This time of year it is almost hard not to think about being thankful. However, when
we stop and look around it is extremely easy to see so many things that happen each
and every day. Perhaps it may be so common that we don’t say thank you or even
recognize how special and blessed we are at Bishop Neumann High School.
In the last couple of weeks, we had a service day to thank the parish
supporters for all that they do to help our school community out. Over the past
month, a couple other examples of service have been observed. After our softball
banquet celebrating a State Championship, numerous parents helped put the cafeteria
back in order. Prior to the One-Act play, the basketball team helped set up the tarp
and the participants and some parents put the chairs into place. Also, the over
whelming support for the collection of clothing and food supplies collected by the TORCH, Elizabeth Ann Seton, JP II,
and Campus Ministries groups going to Omaha’s St. Francis Sienna Home and Lincoln’s, Catholic Social Services is a
sight to behold. The mounds of items given by the whole community is truly inspiring. It is awesome to be a part of a
community that has so many people who understand that working together makes this a
great place. Day-in and day-out students, teachers, and their families help in the classroom
and in the community. So many act in silence and often may not be known by those
around. Truly, there are too many wonderful acts of kindness and true generosity to begin to
name them all. What is most important is that we take a moment to THANK YOU for all
that you do to continue to support your children, teachers, administration, parishes, and
anyone associated with Saunders Catholic Schools.
Sincerely,
John Kreikemeier, Principal

Freshmen Parents:
During the month of January, Mr. Rezac's freshmen Literature and Composition class will be reading Night, the story of a 15 year-old boy's experiences in the Holocaust. After reading the book, the class will be watching Schlindler's List, a powerful and truthful account of the Jewish experience during the Holocaust. This movie is rated “R.” While some scenes will be edited, it is graphic and includes some rough language and violence. If any parents have concerns about this, they should contact Mr. Rezac at school. If a parent does not want their child to see this film, alternate assignments can be worked out that will not have a negative impact on the student's grade.
Thanks, Tim Rezac
SPORTSMANSHIP
With the beginning of winter sports seasons starting soon please be
reminded of the following sportsmanship rules for home and away contests.
1. Show interests in the contests by cheering on the performance of your team.
2. Show respect for the national anthem by standing at attention and singing. Please remove your hat.
3. Cheers during the introduction of the Cavaliers.
4. Show no disrespect during the introduction of the visiting team or officials.
5. Be respectful during the prayer before the contest.
6. Students will not be a distraction to the athletes or the contest in any way.
7. Cheer with the cheerleaders and applaud the band.
8. Noisemakers are not allowed in the gym at any time.
9. No negative cheers are allowed. No booing, “air ball” and “you can’t do that” type of chants.
10. Profanity will not be tolerated.
11. Students are not allowed on the floor. Please stand on the base of the first row.
12. No negative actions toward the officials. Accept their calls as part of the game.
13. Pay attention to the half time performances. These groups have worked hard to entertain you.
14. Respect the property of the school. Do not stomp on the bleachers.
15. Please throw all trash away. Trash receptacles will be located near the student section.
16. Show concerns for injured athletes regardless of what team they play for. Make sure all themes and dress are appropriate. When in doubt ask first.
We receive many compliments on our student body about your support at games. Your behavior is a reflection on Bishop Neumann,
your community and families. Please continue your positive attendance at home and away contests. The impressions you make can
last a lifetime.

The Bishop Neumann TORCH group encourages all students to consider witnessing for the unborn on this prayerful pilgrimage! Please talk to a current TORCH member to find out more about this opportunity! Sign up is managed by the Diocese of Lincoln Youth Ministry Office. Please visit
www.lincolndiocese.org/youth for more details.
January 22 is a day which hundreds of thousands of ardent pro-lifers, Catholic and non-Catholic, attend the National March for Life in Washington, D.C., the unfortunate anniversary of the legalization of abortion by the Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade. It is a peaceful and prayerful way to give a voice to the voiceless unborn children. Each year the Diocese of Lincoln participates in standing up for the right to life. The trip is open to all high school students. The trip includes round-trip transportation, housing, some meals, and touring of Washington D.C. monuments and other sites. We pray that each year will be the last year we need to march, that the personhood and right to life of every unborn child will be recognized.
2018 March For Life January 16 - 21, 2018
Student Cost: $450 Trip must be paid in full by December 1, 2017. Registration is open to all high school
students.
Chaperone Cost: $250. Must be 21 or older.
Trip includes:
Tour of Nation's Capital
The National March for Life Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception

Hunting Season Reminder: Please ensure your student does not have a
weapon in their vehicle when parked on or near
campus. State law requires a minimum one year
mandatory suspension if a gun or weapon is
found on school grounds.

Trap Team will be again forming with a kick off informational meeting to be scheduled in January. Last year was
another great year with at least 12 different people earning individual medals and Jr. and Sr. High teams medaling during the regular
season as well as bringing home a State Team Trophy.
Neumann has fielded a Trap Shooting team for over 10 years with a recent average of over 30 kids on the team. Every kid on
the team is able to compete in the 6 regular season shoots, a conference shoot, and the State shoot where 842 Junior High and 1422 High
School students competed at last spring.
No Shooting Experience necessary to begin participating in the fastest growing sport in Nebraska. This is a Co-ed sport where
you compete both as an Individual and as a 5 person team and where girls shoot competitively with the boys. All skill levels are
allowed to compete at each shoot.
Competitions are all-day events on Saturdays and we have a lot of fun under the Neumann Flag at our base camp.
Formal practices will begin in February at the Ashland Gun Club. Practices are typically on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting at 4:15.
We shoot at least 2 rounds (50 shots) at each practice and you will need to bring $6 to pay for that fee at each practice and your two
boxes of shells.
We also have informal open shooting times going on right now on Tuesday evenings and is a great way to learn to see if you
are interested in the sport. If you want to see what it is about contact one of the coaches for detail, bring one of your parents and come
check us out. Safety is a very important concern so students must always follow the rules.
Coaches for the Neumann team are Dan Gruenes , Karl Weist, Jerome Masek and Ozzy Osmera.
All shooters participating on the team are required to have successfully completed the Nebraska Game and Parks Firearm
Hunter Education Course.
Coach Dan Gruenes can be reached at cell phone number of 402-670-8281. Feel free to call him or talk to one of the other
coaches if you have more questions.

Attendance Codes – What do They Mean?
If you would like to see a more accurate account of your student’s attendance, log into PowerSchool and select Attendance History (third
selection from the top). If your student is gone for any reason, one of the following codes will be in the box for the day and period(s)
they are absence. If there are no codes in the box, your student was present.
If the absence is coded with A, CD, DF, IL MU, OS, TR, or UN it will count toward your student’s absences. All others do not. I hope
this helps you understand our attendance codes. Please feel free to call the office if you have any questions.

The Effects of Social Media on
Mental Health
1 in 5 youth have a diagnosable mental, emotional or behavioral health disorder (National Alliance on Mental
Illness). While some experiences or activities can promote mental health and well-being, others have the potential
to hinder our wellness. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, social media has the potential to
negatively affect the mental well-being of young kids and teens. Adolescence is an important period of growth and
development. There is no doubt that technology plays a major role in the lives of our youth. As such, it is important
that we pay attention to how technology affects them.
Modern teens are learning to do most of their communication online or via text messaging. When we
learn to do most of our communication looking at a screen instead of another person, we miss out on
very critical social skills, such as the art of talking, relating to people face to face (reading body
language) and navigating social negotiations. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics,
virtual interactions come with less risk for some teens, resulting in increased anxiety during real-life
social interactions.
Some of the adverse risks associated with social media use include cyberbullying, depression, high
levels of anxiety, low levels of self-esteem and FOMO (fear of missing out). Social media’s filtered
sense of reality can lead to critically comparing and moments of envy, leading to lower self-esteem
and depression. Additionally, excessive monitoring of friends online behaviors can lead to feelings of
exclusion and turn into increased social anxiety.
It is important to note that there are some benefits associated with social media. Because of the
individual nature of kids and teens, we can’t assume that all youth respond in the same way to social
networking. How teens use social media matters. One of the best ways adults can ensure that kids are
engaging in healthy online experiences is to have conversations with young people about their socially
networked life. Ask them:
Why do you use social media?
How does it make you feel?
Who are your “friends” that you follow or communicate with online? What do you like best?
What isn’t so great?
Other tips:
Face-to-Face time is key to youth mental health. While social media can provide a sense of support and
belonging and strengthen existing friendships, it isn’t a replacement for “real life” social experiences.
Encourage youth to get involved. Finding an interest, hobby, volunteer project or enjoyable activity to engage in not
only can open doors for more face-face interaction, but can also help build self-esteem and confidence.
Create “Screen Free” Time. Set aside meal times, car rides or other times of the day to connect without screens.
Lights Off, Screens Off. Sleep deprivation greatly impacts young people’s mental health. Make sure kids/teens unplug
before bed.
Set a good example as adults. It’s up to parents to set a good example of what healthy “device” usage looks like. Be
“fully present” when interacting and communicating with youth. Kids need to see our faces, not our heads bent over
screens.

The name of the newsletter is a play
on words: “plume” being French for
“pen” and English for “feather” —
representing the pen of the journalist
and the plume in the Cavalier’s hat.
(Taken from the The Plume, Vol. I,
No. 1, p. 1. Oct. 1964)
