HOLY LAND CHRISTIAN ART Olive-wood Handcrafted from the Holy

Land A Traditional Art and Livelihood for Holy Land

Christians

Olivewood Carving Event Holy Angels Parish

March 3rd – 4th The Olivewood carving industries has evolved as a cultural tradition of the Christians over many centuries. Many Holy Land Christians in the Bethlehem area alone rely upon income generated from this art form. Local Catholic artisans carve the items.

Many families are facing critical situations. Without income, Artisans leave their tradition art and trade and emigrate with their families to find relief from the difficult conditions of their homeland.

Christian’s presence in the Holy Land has extended from the Pentecost to the present. 65 years ago, Christians represented more than 28% of the population and now represent less than 2%.

The loss of Christians in the Land of Christianity’s birth will represent a tragedy of immeasurable proportions for all Christians worldwide.

Thank you for your vital support for Christian Tradition and in protecting this very important culture and industry.

Dedicated to supporting the Christian community in the Holy land and to preserve the Christian presence.

STEWARDSHIP BEGINS WITH PRAYER “Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed…He told them, ‘Let us go on to the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose have I come.’”

- - Mark 1:35, 38 In today’s Gospel reading we see a perfect example of Stewardship. Jesus gives His time to do all that God wishes - healing the sick and preaching. But before He begins, Jesus makes time to be alone with God in prayer. It is through prayer, spending time with God, that we find the strength to do what He wishes us to do. Be sure to find time every day to be with God.

The 2018 "House of Charity" Appeal: Walk With Me

Dear Parishioners,

It is once again that time of year when our bishop, as spiritual leader of the Diocese of Camden, makes an appeal for our help with the various ministries and programs of the diocese. The operation of a diocese is very much like the operation of a parish, only on a much larger scale. Essentially, we—as a parish or as a diocese—can only do the things that our financial means allow. We depend on the generosity of our parishioners to support both.

The House of Charity-Bishop's Annual Appeal has been made in the Diocese of Camden since 1964—for 54 years now! So, it should come as no surprise to any of us. Since we know that this appeal will be made annually, I ask that each of our parishioners/families prepares or budgets for it. Again, it should come as no surprise, like an emergency collection would be after some natural disaster.

There are those among us whose financial means allow them to make a most generous gift. I am extremely grateful for what they can do. However, so many of our financial resources often come from the sacrificial giving of the average parishioner or family. Remember the story of the widow’s mite (See Mk. 12:41-44 or Lk. 21:1-4)— the two small copper coins—from the Gospels? Jesus praised her sacrificial giving even though it seemed minuscule in the eyes of many.

Let me break this situation down a bit. If I put aside less than $20.00 per month, I could easily make a $200.00 contribution annually. Many of us probably could do substantially more, if it were truly sacrificial giving. The average gift within the diocese last year was about $365.00.

This weekend (February 3-4) we will show the 2018 House of Charity video at Mass, followed by an “in pew” solicitation. Please help us as a parish and as a diocese with this appeal. You can make an outright gift or make a pledge which can be completed over time. We ask you please to act this weekend if possible to save us time and money by having to send out additional letters or to make additional follow-up phone calls. Please think and pray about this appeal and I request that you make your decision and commitment as soon as possible.

There is a saying that all politics is local. Remember, when we reach this year’s goal, we will receive 10% of what is collected for use back here in our parish. Additionally, 75% of all funds received above our parish goal is returned to our parish. This year's parish goal at Holy Angels is $170,456.49.

So, on behalf of our diocese and our bishop, I humbly ask for your assistance with this appeal. As my parishioners, I hope you realize that I infrequently ask for money. I am generally uncomfortable with this task. However, there are many who will undoubtedly benefit from our financial gifts and sacrifices and I appeal to your generosity on their behalf. !

MARTIN LUTHER KING JR DAY The children of the parish, Holy Angels School and the Religious Education Program, held a joint Martin Luther King Jr Day of service on Monday, January 15th.

Ms. Elsie Tedeski, Principal and Mrs. Irene Cark, Director of Religious Education put a program together and executed it with help from the Knights of Columbus and the Life and Jus-tice Ministry.

The children had a period of service in the morning after an opening prayer.

Service Projects were tailored to age group. They consisted of: °making cheese and PB & J sandwiches

for the Cathedral Pantry: °condiments and plasticware bags for the Cathedral Kitchen °younger students drew pictures on placemats for the Cathedral Kitchen and made cards for residents of

The Mews °letters of welcome were written to refugees and immigrants

°letters were written to the diocesan seminarians

After lunch a closing prayer service was held wherein the children reflected on what they had done in light of the spiritual and corporal works of mercy. A correlation between the service done through the works of mercy on the one hand and the Gifts and Fruits of the Holy Spirit on the other was dis-cussed.

The Knights of Columbus provided the cheese for the sandwiches. Members of the Life and Justice Ministry, as well as the teachers helped with supervising the activities and prayer service.

I invite you to Walk with Me Walk with Me Walk with Me Walk with Me and learn about

those who have benefitted from the programs

and ministries made possible by your gift to the

House of Charity – Bishop’s Annual Appeal.

SOCIAL, COMMUNITY AND HEALTH CARE SERVICES - “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.” Psalm 23: 4

Your generosity provides services through Catholic Charities offices in each county of South Jersey. In addition, Home and Parish Healthcare Services of the Diocese of Camden brings new life and spirit into the hearts of those we cherish the most – our elderly and disabled, along with their families and caregivers. Together, we offer support to the weak, vulnerable and disenfranchised.

EVANGELIZATION AND FAITH FORMATION - “And these three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed′nego, fell bound into the burning fiery furnace. And they walked about in the midst of the flames, singing hymns to God and blessing the Lord.” Daniel 3:23 – 4:1

Lay leadership training, intercultural ministries, ministry with the deaf and persons with disabilities, marriage enrichment, adult faith formation, liturgical catechesis and other evangelization efforts, along with your gifts, kindle the fire of faith into a bright beacon for all to see.

YOUTH, YOUNG ADULT AND CAMPUS MINISTRIES - Tobit’s Youth and Virtuous Life “I, Tobit, walked in the ways of truth and righteousness all the days of my life, and I performed many acts of charity to my brethren and countrymen who went with me into the land of the Assyrians, to Nin′eveh.” Tobit 1:3

Your donation enables programs like Summer in the City, Catholic Scouting, Theology on Tap, college campus ministries and Newman Centers, and support for a growing number of parish-based Youth Ministry programs and many more activities to build community and prepare our youth and young adults for the mission that God has chosen for them.

VOCATIONS, SEMINARIAN & PERMANENT DIACONATE FORMATION, CARE OF PRIESTS - “Now therefore, O Lord, God of Israel, keep with thy servant David my father what thou hast promised him, saying, ‘There shall never fail you a man before me to sit upon the throne of Israel, if only your sons take heed to their way, to walk before me as you have walked before me.’ ” 1 Kings 8:25 Your support ensures that pastors and clergy continue to bring the light of Jesus into the world. Through prayers and support, we currently have 19 seminarians from the Diocese of Camden.

CATHOLIC EDUCATION – “FORMING MINDS AND HEARTS IN GRACE” - “True instruction[a] was in his mouth, and no wrong was found on his lips. He walked with me in peace and uprightness, and he turned many from iniquity.” Malachi 2:6

Catholic schools are an integral part of the teaching mission of the Church. Catholic schools build faith, develop leadership ability and provide academic excellence in a safe environment. Your gift will help keep tuition affordable for families to send children to schools that will support Catholic values, develop character and provide academic excellence.

INCENTIVES FOR PARISH INITIATIVES - “I will give heed to the way that is blameless. Oh when wilt thou come to me? I will walk with integrity of heart within my house.” Psalm 101:2

When our parish collects its goal amount, up to 10% is returned to our parish for our local charitable needs. Additionally, 75% of all funds received above our parish goal will also be returned to our parish to foster our charitable and ministerial work.

WEEKEND RETREAT —MALVERN, PA— February 9—11

The gospel frequently reports that Jesus goes away from his disciples and ministry to be alone in prayer with his Father. The gospels will say that early in the morning he went to a “lonely place”. At other times he will tell his disciples to “come with me to a desert place and rest”.

Every February a few men from Holy Angels take that advice and travel to St. Joseph Retreat House in Malvern, PA for a retreat. This early notice of the retreat is being made to possibly help you plan ahead. The grounds are beautiful. Retreat directors have been inspiring. The retreat is a traditional format that one can follow strictly or loosely depending on your personal need.

Retreat begins Friday evening with supper and ends Sunday about 1:00 PM after noon Liturgy. Offering is suggested at $240 but the Mission of St Joseph Retreat House is not to let finances stop one from attending because of money. Many offer more to cover those who cannot cover all.

If interested give a call to any of the following for further information. Randy Colone 856-468-8803 Joe Krause 856-524-4531 Jerry Washko 856-845-6944

GWCM AND LIFE & JUSTICE MINISTRY REPORT FOR 2017

Just letting you know what good things your support has been doing for the poor and marginalized in our midst!

Our bi-monthly meeting of the Greater Woodbury Coopera-tive Ministry (GWCM) was held on Tuesday, January 9th, summarizing our activity in 2017. During the past year, here is what your continued contribution of food items each Sunday has done for those among us who are limited financially to provide for themselves and their families.

GWCM provided food on a monthly basis in the past year for: 289 local families, of which 197 are children under the age of 18 377 are adults ages 19 - 64 101 are seniors 65+

Handy Helpers: on a monthly basis nine volunteers have helped complete household jobs for five seniors or disabled fellow Christians. Jeannette’s Closet continues to provide clothing and household items for those financially limited.

Thank you very much. Your continued support by materials, donations or money is appreciated.

In addition, the Religious Ed Children of Holy Angels have made, over the past year, on a monthly average, 365 PB&J sandwiches. That number of sandwiches usually covers the clients for one day at the Pantry. Several families have also contributed sandwiches in addition to this number, and others have provided a steady source of Peanut Butter and Jelly for the children who make them.

Your contributions of scarves, gloves and socks for the homeless at the Cathedral Pantry has been greatly appreciated. You should see their faces when one asks: “Do you have any socks,” and the attendant is able to hand him/her a nice clean pair of sweat socks.
