Feast of Corpus Christi

As Robert Louis Wilken, a Catholic convert and university professor, writes, “If Christ is culture, let the sidewalks be lit with fire on Easter Eve, let traffic stop for a column of Christians waving palm branches on a spring morning, let streets be blocked off as the faithful gather for a Corpus Christi procession. Then will others know that there is another city in their midst, another commonwealth, one that has its face, like the face of angels, turned toward the face of God.”

One of my projects down the road is to revive the Corpus Christi procession. It’s on the “to do” list and the hope with such a procession is to increase devotion to the Eucharist and also to witness our great faith to the larger community. So stay tuned.

Meanwhile, we are coming up on the five week readings of the Bread of Life Discourse in John 6. It’s in the B Cycle of readings lasting from the last week of July through all of August. So stay tuned for that as well.

The Preparation of Gifts— Don’t Miss a Great Opportunity to Grow Spiritually! While there is certainly a practical reason for the details of the preparatory rites—bread and wine, vessels and cloths need to be arranged—there is also a spiritual, yet no less real, meaning to the preparation of the altar and gifts.

The gifts that are brought forward—bread, wine, and even monetary offerings—represent the heart of those offering the gifts. The GIRM (General Instruction of the Roman Missal) describes the oblation, the offering of the Eucharistic Sacrifice, in these insightful terms: “In this very memorial, the Church, in particular that gathered here and now, offers the unblemished sacrificial Victim in the Holy Spirit to the Father. The Church’s intention, indeed, is that the faithful not only offer this unblemished sacrificial Victim but also learn to offer their very selves, and so day by day to be brought, through the mediation of Christ, into unity with God and with each other, so that God may at last be all in

all” (GIRM 79).

The Book of Daniel’s story of the three young men in the fiery furnace illustrates well the heart’s movement at this point in the Mass. Having been thrown by King Nebuchadnezzar in the white-hot flames, Azariah offers this prayer: “For we are reduced, O Lord, beyond any other nation, brought low everywhere in the world this day because of our sins. We have in our day no prince, prophet, or leader, no burnt offering, sacrifice, oblation, or incense, no place to offer first fruits, to find favor with you. But with contrite heart and humble spirit let us be received; as though it were burnt offerings of rams and bulls, or tens of thousands of fat lambs, so let our sacrifice be in your presence today and find favor before you; for those who trust in you cannot be put to shame. And now we follow you with our whole heart” (3:37-41).

In other words, the only gifts the three young men had to offer to God was their hearts! God hears their prayer, sending his angel to drive out the furnace’s flames, “as though a dew-laden breeze were blowing through it. The fire in no way touched them or caused them pain or harm” (Daniel 3:50).

The Preparation of the Gifts signifies our own offering hearts. So be sure to offer yours each time at this point in the Mass.

Vocations Chalice

We are in need of prayers for an increase of priests. If you would be interested in taking home our Vocations Chalice, for one week, praying the prayers (which are included) and then returning it at the end of the week, please call 815-398-4280 or email [email protected]. The purpose of the Chalice Program is to encourage families to pray and promote vocations to the Priesthood and Religious Life. The consecrated Chalice is a tangible reminder of this special intention for the Church. The Second Vatican Council highlights the responsibility of the laity to pray for and support vocations. This urgent call has been strongly affirmed in the writings and addresses of both Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI.

Praying for vocations is the most powerful way to support vocations. A vocation is a call from the Holy Spirit, a gift from God that is nurtured in prayer. When we pray for vocations, we lift up to our Father those men and women whom He is calling to follow Him in a very special way. We hope that those who bring the cup home will continue to pray daily for vocations. They can also send a note of support to a Seminarian, Priest or Sister. (USCCB website)

James Harrison saved 2,400,000 babies with his blood - Grace Stark, www.aletieia.org, writes, “The ‘Man with the Golden Arm,’ has donated 1,173 times but what makes his blood so special is it contains a high concen-tration of antibodies used to make Anti-D’ injections. Anti-D is a special medication given to pregnant moth-ers with Rh-negative bloodtypes to protect their Rh+ babies from developing Rhesus D Hemolytic Disease which can be deadly.” (https://tinyurl.com/yc5cy0q#) Men in China and India can’t find wives because 71,000,000 girls were killed in abortion or infanticide - Eric Metaxas, www.lifenews.com, writes, “Ironically, many of the parents who aborted their baby daughters in favor of sons will never have grandchildren. There are no women for their sons to marry. These men, who ex-pected to marry and rear children, are desperately lone-ly. ‘Brides’ are kidnapped from other countries and as-saults on women are on the rise.” (https://tinyurl.com/y7b4a3lb) Cardinal Burke: “False religions that permit abortion should be suppressed.” - Doug Mainwaring, www.lifesitenews.com, writes, ‘A religion which would permit the killing of infants or allow any other kind of intrinsic evil is why the reality of the kingship of Christ is so important. Concealed by other prelates, clerics, and Catholic academics for decades in the name of promot-ing ecumenism and avoiding contention, the Church has allowed herself to be silenced. That reticence to confi-dently proclaim the rightful role of the Church under the rule of Christ the King has emasculated efforts to evan-gelize, to teach with moral authority, to draw all men to the sacraments, to protect life, and even to shield and maintain the immutable definitions of man, woman, child, marriage and family. Individual Catholics must consciously place themselves under the ‘Kingship of Christ’ in the face of enemies of the Church today at-tempting to ‘infiltrate the life of the Church herself and to corrupt the Bride of Christ by an apostasy from the Apostolic Faith.’” (https://tinyurl.com/y4n44l0r)
