The 3 H’s As I have mentioned recently in my homilies at all our Masses, part of the revival that is going on in some Catholic churches surround the “Sunday experience,” consisting of a major upgrade and different approach to the three “Hs,” Hospitality, Hymns and Homilies. A month ago we featured hospitality; two weeks ago it was hymns. You can hear the homilies on our website. I won’t be giving a homily about the third “H,” homilies, but that doesn’t mean it is being neglected. Last week Fr. Fitzpatrick and Deacon Zammuto went to a workshop on homilies at Mundelein Seminary put on by the Liturgical Institute. We are always looking at ways to improve our preaching and any suggestions you have are welcome. This is another area where we can learn from Protestant preachers. I admire many of them for their preaching skills, even if I disagree with some of their theology. One thing we all have to realize in this area is that we have to work within our God- given talents and use the style that best fits us. Quarterbacks are often taught that as well—to work within their abilities, and a good coach will design his playbook around the quarterback’s strengths and weaknesses. It’s no different here with homilies—so don’t expect the next Venerable Fulton Sheen in the next few weeks! But we will get better, within our skill set, temperament and preaching abilities. One thing I have adapted from Catholic revival books is preaching at all the Masses when I feel there is a message all of you need to hear. That has turned out to be once every six weeks on average, but it really varies. Just this fall I have preached at all the Masses for: “Time” weekend, “Talent” weekend, Planned Giving, Hospitality and now Hymns.

Bataan Death March Memorial Close out coming soon! Although the Memorial March is not until St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 2019 registration for it closes soon. The last date to register is Friday, December 14. If you have been considering going, sign up today! Questions about the March? Email or call me at [email protected] or 815-398-4280. The flyer with all the information you need to sign up is in the narthex by the bulletin boards. Keep in mind there are two marches—one for 14.2 miles and one for 26.2 miles. You can do either and judging by the sign ups so far, we have about half in each group.

Pictured above: One of the marchers greets one of the Bataan Death March survivors. It’s been a tradition for the Death March survivors to greet those who marched at the finish line.

Man couldn’t walk for 10 years, but his own stem cells changed everything - Nancy Flanders, www.liveaction.org, writes, “Roy Palmer has multiple sclerosis (MS) and has been unable to walk. Seeing two people who entered the hospital in a wheel chair and left walking, he wanted to try the experimental treatment known as HSCT, hematopoi-

etic stem cell transplantation. The risks didn’t deter him from attempting the treatment. The doctors took his own stem cells, did chemotherapy to kill his immune system and finally, ’rebooted’ his immune system with the stem cells they removed. Within just two days of receiving his stem cells, he could feel his left leg, calling it a ‘miracle.’ According to the Charlotte Lozier Institute (CLI), adult stem cells have been used to help over a mil-lion people so far, and there are over 3,500 ongoing or completed clinical trials involving adult stem cells, treat-ing heart damage, stroke damage, sickle cell anemia, spinal cord injury, and more. According to the CLI, treat-ments using controversial embryonic stem cells have yet to reveal any validated success stories.” (https://tinyurl.com/ydfzl9lq) Pro-life bright spots in the 2018 midterm elections - Kathy Schiffer, www.ncregister.com, writes, “Alabama voters approved a constitutional amendment which said that unborn babies have a right to life. The amendment also guarantees that ‘the constitution of this state does not protect the right to abortion or require the funding of abortion.’ [unlike in Illinois where taxpayers fund Medicaid abortions.] In West Virginia, voters approved a constitutional amendment which states that there is no ‘right to abortion.’” (https://tinyurl.com/ycu6mb73) Trump Administration updates conscience exemptions for contraceptive mandate - Catholic News Agency, “The Departments of Health and Human Services, Treasury, and Labor released two updated rules concerning conscience protections for organizations and individuals in relation the HHS contraceptive mandate. The Little Sisters of the Poor are finally released from the man-date. The new rules also cover nonprofit organizations, small businesses, and individuals that have ‘non-religious moral convictions’ opposed to the services covered by the man-date.” (https://tinyurl.com/ycxbe6c4) Save the Date - December 8, 2018 The National Night of Prayer for the Unborn will be held from 8:00pm-midnight at St. Rita’s Parish, 6254 Valley Knoll Drive, Rockford.
