The Epistle Reading is Acts of the Apostles 1:1-8 IN THE FIRST BOOK, O Theophilos, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commandment through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. To them he presented himself alive after his passion by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days, and speaking of the king-dom of God. And while staying with them he charged them not to de-part from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, "you heard from me, for John baptized with water, but before many days you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit." So when they had come together, they asked him, "Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom of lsrael?" He said to them, "it is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has fixed by his own authority. But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth."

The Gospel Reading John 1:1-17 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God; all things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came for testimony, to bear wit-ness to the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness to the light. The true light that enlight-ens every man was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world knew him not. He came to his own home, and his own people received him not. But to all who re-ceived him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become chil-dren of God; who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father. (John bore witness to him, and cried, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me ranks before me, for he

  • 4

was before me.'") And from his fullness have we all received, grace upon grace. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

    Χριστός Ἀνέστη! Christ is Risen!

Today as we proclaim, “It is the Day of Resurrection,” we glorify God, and we shout with resounding joy because it is the Day of life. Our Risen Lord is victorious over death. By His glorious Resurrection, Christ has shown the unlimited power of God as the Source and Giver of life; and because of His love for us, He has brought us from death unto life, and from earth unto Heav-en. Life is restored by our Creator to all that it was meant to be! Life abun-dant and eternal is ours! The Risen Lord stands before us on this holiest of days saying, I am the resur-rection and the life; he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live; and whoever lives and believes in me shall never die. (John 11:25-26) Life beyond the grave has been revealed. The fear of death has been dispelled in the light and power of the Resurrection. In this glorious light we ask with Saint Paul, O death where is your victory? death where is your sting? (1 Corinthians 15:55) We proclaim our joy, because this perishable nature can put on imper-ishability, and this mortal nature can put on immortality. (1 Corinthians 15:53) Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of God has come, and we shall live forever.

  • 7

In the blessings of this Feast of feasts, from the promises of our own resurrec-tion and eternal life, we see that our earthly life is transformed. We are offered abundant, fulfilling, and purposeful life. We are called by the Risen Lord to embrace this life. Through our faith in Him and the power of the Res-urrection, we are a new creation. Our lives are transformed, as the old passes away and all things are made new. (2 Corinthians 5:17) Today, we are called to put on the new nature, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness. (Ephesians 4:24) Our response to this gift of life is worship and praise. We have beheld the Res-urrection. We have witnessed the impossible. We have seen the power of God, We have come to worship Him who trampled death and gives us life. May this Feast of Holy Pascha be filled with joy and light. May your fel-lowship in Christ be blessed in your parishes and homes, and may the true and abundant life you have found in the Resurrection be visible to all the world! Christ is risen! He truly is risen! With paternal love in the Risen Lord, † DEMETRIOS Archbishop of America

MESSAGE FROM HIS EMINENCE METROPOLITAN ALEXIOS

My Beloved Ones, This past January, I was blessed to spend time with a group of pilgrims as we traveled to the Holy Land. Of the many sacred places we were able to visit, one of the most spiritually uplifting experiences was cele-brating the Divine Liturgy at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Tomb of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Several months before, in November of 2017, there was a momentous discovery during the site’s ongoing restoration, when the stone of the tomb was indeed confirmed to have originated in the 4th Century, when St. Constantine the Great built the shrine that now surrounds the burial bed of our Lord. While not all of us have yet had the opportunity to venerate the place in which our Lord rested after His Passion and Crucifixion, each and every one of us has experienced, and will soon, once again experience the great joy that is the Resurrection of Christ. Together, we will gath-er with our families and fellow parishioners, and we shall relive the experience of His disciples. As they dwelt in darkness on that great Sabbath, so will all the lights of our churches be extinguished. Like those faithful myrrh-bearing women, we too have come to venerate the body of our Lord. And yet, what do we find instead? As the women are greeted by the joyous proclamations of the Angel, so we who wait in darkness receive the Light which is eternal and can-not be dimmed even by death. As St. Paul writes to the Corinthians, “O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?” We know, as St. John Chrysostom writes in his Paschal Homily, that we should “let no one fear death, for the Saviour's death has set us free.” This is my most fervent wish for all of you, my dear children: that no matter where you are—whether in our God-Protected Metropolis of Atlanta or elsewhere—your hearts be opened to experiencing the mir-

acle of the Resurrection with the same joy and awe that the disciples felt, as if living it for the very first time. Only with this joy, this for-giveness, this love for all living things, shall we truly be able to appreci-ate the miraculous deed the Lord undertook to reconcile His creation to our Father. I therefore send you that most beautiful greeting of all:

Χριστὸς ἀνέστη! Christ is Risen! +ALEXIOS Metropolitan of Atlanta

Pascha, the Resurrection of Christ from the dead, is without a doubt, the greatest mystery that mankind has ever witnessed. Ponder the thought: Christ, Who is GOD, DIED; and came back to LIFE! Truly a mind-boggling thought! Nevertheless, this is precisely what we celebrate! The passage of LIFE from the state of PHYSICAL DEATH to the state of PHYSICAL LIFE. The word PASCHA, which is Jewish, means PASSAGE or CROSS-OVER. Hence, the more proper term for the Feast is PASCHA. Exactly at Midnight, our Priest exits from the Altar bearing a lighted Paschal Candle, chanting the hymn:

“Come, receive the Light from Christ our everlasting light, and glorify Him Who is risen from the dead. At this point the faithful receive Light from the unending Light of Christ. This signifies our own resurrection and restoration taking us from sin to life. Following the reading narrating the Empty Tomb, we all join in joyously sing-ing and praying the triumphal Hymn of the Resurrection:

“Christ is risen from the dead, by death, trampling down upon death, and to those in the tombs, He has granted life.” The Resurrection Divine Liturgy is offered and prayed and at the end we re-ceive our Red Paschal Egg as a symbol declaring the Resurrection of our Lord. Many Faithful take the lighted candle home with them along with a vigil light

to keep for seven days. Yet others will take it home and try to keep it lit for forty days, until the Ascension of our Lord into the heavens. And others will take it home, and re-light the pilot light of their stove knowing this flame which prepares meals for them is the Light of Christ and knowing this, they offer a prayer. Orthodox around the world cherish their beloved traditions at this Great Feast. What a joy it is to learn about them. Even better, may they inspire us to grow in our Risen Lord’s image and likeness, knowing that He has put death to death, for He is the Son of God Who saves the human race. +Fr. George Tsahakis Chancellor

STEWARDSHIP A COMMITMENT TO HIS CHURCH IN TIME, TALENT & TREASURE

Orthodox Christian Stewardship is a way of life, which acknowledges ac-countability, reverence, and responsibility before God. A primary goal of Stewardship is to promote spiritual growth and strengthen faith. Becoming a Steward begins when we believe in God, to whom we give our love, loyal-ty and trust and act on those beliefs. As Stewards, we affirm that every as-pect of our lives comes as a gift from Him. Stewardship calls on the faithful to cheerfully offer back to God a portion of the gifts with which they have been blessed. An Orthodox Christian Steward is an active participant in the life of the Church. The parish encourages all who accept the Orthodox Faith to be-come practicing Stewards. Each year the Steward is expected to carefully review his or her personal circumstances and make a commitment of time, talent, and treasure to support the Parish and her Ministries, which in turn support the National Ministries of our Archdiocese, Metropolises, and insti-tutions.

Stewardship is caring for the needs of others. Stewardship is offering one's self to God as He offered Himself to us.

Stewardship is what a person does after saying "I believe..." as proof of that belief.
