Holiday Leftover Edition
As I write this, snow
is falling and it’s a couple of
days before the new year.
Yeah, probably time to reflect
on the past twelve months and
the next twelve. CCR has con-
ducted a number of events this
past year – our Spring Dust
Off in April and our All-GM
Show in August are the two
major events, but our May
BBQ and Fall cruise to White
Post Restorations were also
fun for those who participated.
I’d first like to take this oppor-
tunity to thank those who
helped this past year. Club VP
Cory Correll did his usual ex-
cellent job of organizing the
All-GM Show, from producing
the hand-drawn show artwork
to arranging for the show
venue to coordinating with the
Buick club. Cory obviously
has help from many club mem-

EDITOR‘S NOTE: Just
prior to completing this
edition, we learned that
long time CCR member
Denney Keys, who held
board positions in CCR for
a long time, and most re-
cently always tallied the
votes at our All-GM
shows, had passed away
the morning of December
30th after a year long battle
with cancer. His wife
Mimi Keys wanted us to
pass along his service in-
formation. There will be a
celebration of Denney’s life
on Sunday, January 6th,
2013 at Walden Country
Club in Crofton, MD from
1-4 pm. CCR will be mak-
ing a donation to the fam-
ily and members plan to
attend.
Happy New Year from
the Capitol City Rockets.
Inside check out some
great fall events, as well as
some ―leftovers‖ from
2012. At right is Cory
Correll‘s design for the
2102 All-GM Show plaque.
It‘s been a while since the
last newsletter, so this one
will cover a lot of ground!
bers to run the show, and
they all deserve our thanks.
Others I’d like to mention
include Scott Phillips for
producing our award-winning
club newsletter and acting as
the glue to hold the club to-
gether through his emails and
announcements. Owen Grie-
semer again graciously hosted
the club BBQ at his home,
Ken Quincy maintains the
club finances and keeps us
legal, Jeff Neischel ensures
that our membership com-
plies with OCA requirements,
and Mike Stillwell serves as
our OCA representative.
These folks all volunteer their
time and deserve our thanks.
The club also needs
your help in the coming year.
We exist to serve you, the
membership. Please let us
know how we can better do
The Capitol City Rockets is the Suburban Maryland, DC,
Northern Virginia chapter of the Oldsmobile Club of America.
The Capitol City Rockets originated in 1989, and is currently
operating in its 24th year. We split monthly meetings (currently)
between Kilroy’s Bar and Grille off the Braddock Road exit of
495 in Northern VA and Branded 72 BBQ in Rockville, with
one peer judged show co-hosted each year with the Metro Buick
Club. The club currently consists of nearly 50 members, from Vir-
ginia, Maryland, Florida, and 1each from DC and West Vir-
ginia. A membership form is located in the back of this newsletter.
One need not own an Oldsmobile to join, and dues remain $15
dollars per year, payable by November the 1st, either by check or
using the PayPal button on our Hemmings.com website. Current
membership in the Oldsmobile Club of America is a requirement of
CCR membership, as we are required to submit club rosters to
OCA for yearly insurance coverage for our events.

Keeping the Legend Alive
President’s Message—Continued
The Capitol City Rockets—Who We Are
that. Attendance this year has
been sporadic, and the All-
GM Show actually lost a little
money for the first time. This
may be due to the economy or
it may be due to the changing
needs of the membership. Let
us know. Feel free to contact
any of the club officers, either
through email or by phone,
and tell us how we can make
the club better for you. Do
you have ideas or suggestions
for events? Would a different
time or location for meetings
be more convenient? Is there
some other club benefit that
you’d like to see? Our club is
geographically diverse, and we
try to accommodate that by
scheduling meetings and
events on both sides of the
beltway. Please let us know
how we can improve that.

Suggestions are certainly wel-come; volunteered labor is even better. The next meeting is January 13th at Kilroy’s in Springfield, VA. We’ll be re-viewing the proposed meeting schedule for 2013 and discuss-ing club events for the year. That would be a great time for you to drop by and offer your suggestions. You can access the club meeting schedule from the CCR webpage at http://clubs.hemmings.com/capitolcityrockets/?club=capitolcityrockets. If you don’t see the most current ver-sion of the website, refresh your browser. I look forward to see-ing you at the January meeting or at future CCR events. Happy New Year. Joe Padavano

Page 6 The Rocket Review Volume 23, Issue 3
Thanks for a Great 2012 All GM. If we missed your Olds in pictures, our apologies!
I own two restoration project cars, a 1969 Olds Cutlass S convertible and a 1974 Excalibur Phaeton. Both were in reasonable
condition when I purchased them several years ago. Trim pieces on the Excalibur required repair and rechroming. Instruments needed
repair. The Olds needed bumper rechroming and wheel well moldings and small parts that are not available aftermarket (or not easily
found in aftermarket). Here is my story about finding and using vendor services and salvage yards.
Instrument/gauge repair: 1. Reynolds Speedometer, Naples FL. 239-643-4103. [email protected]. He refaced the Ex-
calibur speedometer at a price way below other vendor’s estimates. He apparently uses a computer-based graphics method, because there
was no expensive set-up cost as is common with silk-screen methods. This a great place to use if you have a unique or uncommon instru-
ment for which the silk screen has not already been paid for by someone else. White Post Restoration recommended this place to me
when the club visited the shop in Nov 2011.
2. D & M Restoration, Greenville SC. 800-722-0854.www.dandmrestoration.com. They made mechanical repairs to the Excalibur
speedometer. They fixed damage caused by a local ―restoration‖ shop. They do good work, at reasonable prices.
Chrome Plating and Trim Repair: 1. N.E. L. Inc. Philadelphia, PA. They rechromed the luggage rack and hood ornament for
Excalibur, and straightened/rechromed the Olds front bumper. The hood ornament required metalwork to fill in (weld) some deep
gouges. They matched the alloy perfectly, then polished. The repair is absolutely invisible. The Olds bumper rechrome job was expensive,
compared to what other vendors offer; but I used them because they were in easy driving distance. Their plating work and polishing was
superb. Unfortunately, I think they sold the business to a new owner, since I can no longer find a phone/address for them.
2. Custom Plating Specialist, Brillion, WI. 920-756-3284. [email protected]. I used them to rechrome some small trim parts on the
Excalibur. Great work at very reasonable prices.
3. Vintage Vehicles, Inc. Wautoma, WI. 920-787-2656. www.vintagevehicles.net. I used them to repair gouges in aluminum bumper
overriders on the Excalibur. I used them since Custom Plating does not do weld repair work. Work was OK, but after a year I could see
some mismatch between aluminum repair and base metal (but you really have to look for it!). I would go back to them for any metal-
work/stainless straightening etc.
Carburetor Rebuild: Lars Grimsrud, Lafayette, CO. 303-604-6376. [email protected]. I learned about him after lots of internet
research to rebuild a Rochester Quadrajet 4-barrel for the 454 BB Chev in the Excalibur. I had just bought a ―numbers-matching‖ carb
for that engine that was claimed to have just been rebuilt. After reading much of Grimsrud’s internet commentary on generally poor qual-
ity of commercial rebuilds (e.g. all QJs rebuilt the same, despite different metering rods, etc, specific to each engine type) and poor quality
generic aftermarket ―rebuild kits‖ for DIY work, I sent carb to him. He found wrong parts in it and rebuilt to exact specs. He also test
runs carbs before shipping back to the owner. Absolutely the best place to get pre-1980 QJ carb work done. Very reasonable prices as he
does rebuilds primarily as a hobby. $180 per carb.
Salvage Yards: I roamed salvage yards to find the wheel well molding for the Olds Cutlass. For 1968-69 Cutlass models, the wheel trim
is not produced by aftermarket suppliers. They can only be found in salvage yards (or on eBay by those who already went to the yards). It
took me visits to four salvage yards in three states before I could find the four pieces in restorable condition (all had the minor dings from
door edge impacts): 1. Cars and Parts, Inc. Columbus IN. 800-225-9025. www.cars-and-parts.net. This is a large yard, but only a few
1960’s vintage Oldsmobiles. I was lucky to find one 1969 Cutlass that had not already been stripped. There is no organization to car loca-
tion. I found one wheel well molding there.
2. Temples Auto Parts. Batesburg, SC. 803-359-9063. This off I-20 west of Columbia, SC. Temples is huge yard, with lots of 50’s thru
70’s cars and trucks (also a companion late model yard). Many late 60’s and early 70’s Oldsmobiles of various styles. I found about eight
1968/69 Cutlass models. Since this is a ―southern locale‖ the cars only have ―some‖ rust. I found one wheel well molding here , along
with lighted rear view mirrors, and small trim bolts not available elsewhere. There is no organization to car location—you just have to
wander and look. It’s a wide open lot, flat with no trees and easy to search. It’s worth a visit just to wander through the yard and look at
all the vintage stuff- but not much pre-1950.
3. Leon‘s Parts. Near Culpeper, VA. Everyone knows about this place. They know the location for every car of a certain year. Easy to
find cars; difficult to find what you want in parts because most cars have been picked over. I found one wheel well molding there.
4. Philbates Auto Wrecking, Inc. New Kent, VA. 804-843-9787. (near Williamsburg). This a huge yard with lots of cars from 50’s up.
There is no organization to this yard; you just have to wander. This yard has many trees and rough terrain—difficult to see what you are
searching for. Plan to spend a whole day there. Prices seem a bit high compared to other salvage yards. I got one molding there.

Dec CCR Trip to White Post Restorations—Ronnie Smith
On Dec 2nd, CCR visited White Post Restorations in
White Post, VA as our holiday outing. Great day!
Several generations of GM history drove out from
Leesburg and other surrounding areas for a tour of
the White Post Restorations facility. It was both great
weather for the driving, and a lot of new work at WPR
to see on our tour.
Left: Big crowd for
our WPR visit!
Right: A little tough
to read, but this is a
list of the Past Hon-
ors of White Post
Restorations, among
them Pebble Beach,
AACA Grand Na-
tional, Meadow-
brook, you name it.
They do high quality
work!
On December 2nd our club was invited to tour White post Restoration once again. We met for lunch at Jammin' Joe Van Dyke's BBQ in White Post. Everyone enjoyed a great lunch. Joe was happy for the business and couldn't stop thanking me. The turnout of club members and their friends was one of the largest for a club event. At one O'clock we took the short drive to the shop, where over 25 car enthusiasts were treated to a guided tour by owner, Billy Thompson IV. Members that were on tour last year got to see some of the same cars closer to completion. We also got to see a few new arrivals including a Continental Mark II and a Willy's Wombat. Billy told us the story behind these cars, and an-swered the many questions that members and guests had. A new area that was part of the tour this year was the sheet metal fabrication shop. I heard a lot of comments about how beautiful the metal replacement, welding , and metal finishing areas were. Billy got married this past summer. His wife, Crystal, was taking pictures of the tour and members cars to post on their new Facebook page. The page is up and running and they would like everyone to check it out and tag their cars if they would like to. This event has been so successful we are planning to have our 3rd annual White Post Restoration Tour again next November/December. When I asked Billy about doing the tour annually he said "no problem". Billy is all for it.
Page 9 The Rocket Review Volume 23, Issue 3
More of the White Post Restorations Tour
Still being worked on this year were the 1956 Chrysler
Limos being shipped over to the Middle East. Billy
Thompson IV, our tour guide, related that each of
these triple figure restorations are a little different from
the other 4 as they get special requests from the buyer.
This 50‘s Jaguar was in the body shop, getting the full
once over prior to paint, interior, and mechanical
work. You can see the shiny new fabrication in this
piece. There are certainly artisans at WPR.
There are exotics being worked
on around the shop. If mem-
ory serves correctly, this one
was sent to WPR at the request
of a dying man‘s will, that his
funds be spent directly on its
restoration for his son or
grandson. We should all get
that kind of inheritance!
Scott Hoffman, Steve Meyer, and Jeff Nieschel
parked their early 70‘s Cutlasses out in the lot. The
garages behind them house several parts cars and
awaiting project cars, and a bit of White Post his-
tory...
At first glance, most of us thought this was a Model A
tucked back in a corner of the facility. In fact, it‘s a
rare complete, if rough, early 30‘s Willy‘sWombat . It
was all there, but it‘ll have a long road back!

SALE/WANTED :
1970 Delta 88 Custom 4-dr sedan, and will be parting it out. It is very original and complete, some rust and a few small dents, with much good trim. Also, 455 4-bbl, tilt, power trunk, light group and power seat. Anyone interested may contact me via email: Owen Griesemer at [email protected] phone: 240-357-5696
We were in Mount Airy Crazy Ray's Junkyard yesterday and ran across what we believe is a 1965 four door sedan F-85. It is very complete and straight with little rust. The bench seats still have their original upholstery and are in excellent condition. Was too good to end up in the junk-yard. Just wanted let your club know, there are a lot of good parts on this car (ie. fenders, bump-ers etc.). Contact Phil Camp @ [email protected]
For those who haven't heard, the annual AACA/Sugarloaf Mtn Region Antique Auto Swap Meet is moving to a new location this year: no longer held at the Frederick County Fairgrounds, it will be held this year at the Car-roll County Agriculture Center in Westminster, MD March 29 and 30.
Scott Hoffman has a repair facility to promote. Wayne Rogers at Roger‘s Automotive Inc 703-631-4242, 14067 Willard Rd Chantilly VA 20151 is a transmission repair shop. Wayne is a guy that undersells and overproduces. He expects his transmissions to hold up to the abuse. I have a 200r4 behind my 455 and the first rebuild was an utter failure, but of course with a week-end cruiser more time than mileage passed and was out of any possible warranty. So the 2nd re-build on the recommendation of a friend I took the trans to Wayne . When I picked up the trans, Wayne showed me the parts and why the trans failed. Wayne built in the parts I thought I was getting the first time. Bigger band, billet parts I do not remember the name of. Vastly superior to first build and cost about the same. (Heard same review from Jim Hunt recently)
1965 Olds Cutlass—330 CI, 300 HP, all new valve seats, plugs, and wires. Edelbrock 4 barrel carb. New radiator, Flow Master exhaust, all original paperwork, as well as one inch thick file of restoration receipts. Located in Poolesville, MD. Mouse Leibrand’s car. Best Offer!
