The Rocket Review Winter Edition To all CCR Rockets, I think spring is finally here, and it is time to really think about running out to Leesburg, VA to this new loca- tion for our Spring Dustoff. It is at Star Pontiac Buick GMC and exposes us to a new neighborhood in VA and maybe drawing out a new crowd. It is to be held from 12 -4 p.m. making for a great Saturday afternoon drive. The address is on the flyer in this newsletter and please think seriously about attending if only to see the cars and say "hello." Also, please spread the word. I am also inviting any local Buicks from the Metro club and the local Cadillac/LaSalle club that would like to join us. Work is slowing con- tinuing on our 100 birthday celebration of General Motors founding at our annual joint All-GM Show at Mont- gomery College in Rockville, MD on Saturday August 9th. We have a contract with the school as well as a verbal con- tract with a new concessions vendor, who will be there in the morning with breakfast and lunch. I refuse to worry what happened to O'Briens' any- more. I hate to see them not there, but the new guys will have coffee, breakfast and a host of items for sale for lunch. They have been on time every year for Vern Parker's "Out of the Past" show each Labor Day and I think their food is excellent. We also have a re- turn verbal commitment with our new D.J. who everyone loved last year. this year will feature a '68 Hurst/Olds to celebrate the 40th anniversary of that car. The only other car I know I want to draw is a 1958 Chevy Impala coupe, celebrating the first year of that model. The Buick, Cadillac and Pontiac models are up in the air. I would like to also propose a new color shirt this year--- a very pale light yellow. I have seen them at triathalon meets and they look new and differ-ent than our same old whites and light greys.

Please come have lunch

and help us plan the new year

this coming Sunday the 9th at

our new Rockville hangout,

lica Delco (don‟t do the

acid battery as I did a

few years back, it‟ll spit

all over your engine

bay). Once accom-

plished, I located a well-

used 1970 Toro manual

and spent a little time

with Vic Cruz of East

Coast Bolts (ad in rear

of The Rocket Review),

who was looking to put

together a bolt and

screw package for that

car. As usual, the boys

did some “car” shop-

ping and came away

with some pretty cool

jacked up school buses

(there‟s one in my son‟s

hand in that Jeep pic-

ture).

On to Hershey,

sans wagon and boys,

and Jeff and I worked a

great deal of it. I hit

every Olds-related

booth listed (and some

not so listed!) and found

some great stuff, includ-

ing a set of NOS trim

rings that just might dress

up my stock rims I fin-

ished last year, and a su-

perb (red with a white

rocket) 60‟s replica Olds

sign that Fusick just put

out.

There is nothing

like Hershey for the

“stumble upons” - like

the sweet „36 on the next

page, and the stunning

obsession of Joseph

Merli, whose adult dream

is lived out by recon-

structing Pre and Curved

Dash Oldsmobiles as they

were done by Ransom E.

Olds. Some of what Jo-

seph shared with me is on

the next page, and I hope

to do a follow up article

when time permits as

there‟s just way too much

information to put here.

I hoped that a few pic-

tures would do our fall

pilgrimages justice, so I‟ll

let them finish the

story… Rocket on, Scott

Fall Carlisle and Hershey were Big Fun

I don‟t know about

you, but I really look for-

ward every fall to my two

trips to Pennsylvania for

Fall Carlisle and Hershey.

My friend Jeff, retired

teacher and Cadillac afi-

cionado, accompanies me

on these trips we have

made a regular habit since

2001.

Jeff is a toy buff

who can name any car by

sight, and I am always

looking for parts and any-

thing Oldsmobile. This

past fall I took my boys

to Carlisle, while Jeff and

I made Hershey together.

I had a specific list of

parts I wanted, starting

with a new battery and

cables from Antique Auto

Battery.

You probably

have seen their products,

and I think they do the

best job in that market. I

was buying a new offering

from them, a sealed rep-

Paul Seleckmann and his

wife drove this maroon 1962

Cutlass convertible down

from PA to show off its new

interior and rebuilt engine.

Yep. This is the new ‟55 shell

you can order from Cars, Inc.

This fine black „67 was parked

out in the show field, and

I keep trying to talk him into

an Olds, but Young Phillips

only has eyes for the 4WD‟s.

Fall Hershey—Olds Galore to be Found

Perhaps the most fascinating

find of my day—Joseph Merli

Manufacturing of NY. This is

a handcrafted (an understate-

ment) replica of the 1899 Olds

Electric Stanhope prototype.

4 were ever made, and all were

lost in March 9, 1901 fire at

Olds Motor Works. I spent

about 45 minutes with Joseph,

who has hours of information

and years of research behind

this latest effort, a follow up to

the Curved Dash below.

The car corral at Hershey. So many cars, so little cash. Gorgeous 1936 Olds was just tucked behind a trailer!

Merli‟s 1904 Curved Dash San Francisco to New York

reproduction sporting a 7 hp, 1 cyl, water cooled engine.

This one‟s for you, Denney. Part of the half mile

long car corral, a shiny green „73 442.
