In its glory years from the 1920s through the 1940s, the Gruen Watch Company of USA & Switzerland was one of the leaders in wristwatch design and quality, even collaborating with Rolex (i.e., the Aegler movement duo-dial doctor’s watch) from its factories in Switzerland. Prior to WWII, Gruen was better known in the USA than Rolex, which at that time was concentrating on the British and Commonwealth countries (hence lots of early Rolexes coming out of Australia and the UK). Hans Wilsdorf and Gruen were friends and neighbors in Switzerland (their factories were just yards away), and even agreed to market their watches as "Rolex-Gruen" in Europe, but the Great Depression (and more urgent matters) prevented this.
If you were to look up “good looking” in the watch dictionary you might come across this late 1920s timepiece, a 14kt Solid White Gold Gruen in excellent shape. It is a men's 117 Caliber Quadron model and that means the mechanism is topnotch, originally meeting chronometer status when the caliber was first introduced and tested.
Don’t just think Curvex when you think of Gruen; many long-time Gruen collectors would argue that the “Quadron” models were the best of their day and even the Gruen Prince Duo Dial model had a Quadron movement inside.
Triple-signed for Gruen, its 14k solid white gold case measures 37mm end to end and 23mm in width (24.5mm with crown). This works out to be just shy of 1-1/2 inches long by 1 inch in width, including the winding crown. It has been fully serviced prior to auction, ensuring it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The silver matte enamel finished luminous dial is in excellent overall condition – professionally restored in the recent past. Features include maze-like design work bordering the oval dial, a 60 minute checkered outer chapter, luminous green numerals, original blue steel skeleton hands with luminous fill (that glows) and an oval-shaped sub-seconds dial with detailed 60 second outer track and ‘sweep’ original seconds hand. Signed GRUEN PRECISION below the 12 and embossed “Switzerland” at the base, below the bezel.
The solid glass crystal is new old stock Gruen, made specifically for this model and in excellent condition (removed in photos to avoid glare). The two-piece case is 14 Karat Solid White Gold

The white gold finished winding crown is excellent as well, operating smoothly.
Turning the watch over I see that the back lid is pure 14kt solid gold and in excellent order, tastefully monogrammed in the center. Inside is where a real "treat" can be found, a beautiful Quadron 117 Caliber mechanism that's a top of the line 17 jewel, adjusted example. It is signed GRUEN WATCH CO., PRECISION [CAL.] 117 - 17 JEWELS SEVENTEEN, SWITZERLAND - ADJUSTED TEMP.. If this isn’t one of the nicest Art Deco timepieces you’ve ever seen I’ll put my dog Carl in a pink tutu and have him dance the “Hokey Pokey” – a truly RARE and beautiful Elgin model.
My favorite among favorite U.S. watch firms is the Elgin National Watch Company, a prolific American firm established in 1864 on 35 acres of land donated by the City of Chicago in Elgin, Illinois. It was a strategic location, right next to the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad, one of the busiest railways into Chicago. By 1867 the first watch was marketed for sale, retailing for $115 (think of that in today’s prices!) and Elgin was soon competing head-on with its chief competitor, Waltham, which (ironically) was instrumental in forming Elgin, as two of the original organizers were P.S. Bartlett and D.G. Currier of Waltham fame.
I am pleased to offer for sale what I think is one of the nicest ladies Art Deco Elgin watch I have ever seen before –a finely engraved 14kt white gold filled model set with four blue sapphires and two genuine diamonds. This is just the third time I’ve had this model in 25 years of collecting and it originally retailed for $70 in 1933 – about $850 in today’s dollars.
This triple-signed timepiece measures 30mm end to end and 17mm in width (19mm with winding crown). This works out to be 1-3/16 inches long by 5/8 of an inch wide, not including the crown. It is powered by its original triplex-style, manual wind Elgin mechanism that has been fully serviced by my watchmaker David to ensure it is running well and keeping accurate time.
The unique diamond-shaped dial is matte enamel finished and in flawless condition, restored to its original status and looking very sharp. It features a 60 minute checkered outer track border, original blue steel hands and black Art Deco numbers. Signed ELGIN below the 12.
The solid glass crystal is in

excellent condition. The 14 Karat White Gold filled case is a tour-de-force of engraved detailing, both on the bezel and wrapping around the sides. The highlight are its four faceted sapphires and two genuine diamonds – all nice and secure with NO flaws. The matching white gold finished winding crown is excellent as well, signed “Elgin” and winding and setting smoothly.
Turning the watch over I note that the back lid is in excellent shape with no wear or personal engravings, very nice. Peeking inside I find a Grade 484, 18/0 size Triplex design movement, signed Elgin, U.S.A with serial number #34,251,532. The inside of the case lid is stamped Cased and Timed by Elgin National Watch Co., 14k Gold Filled - Illinois Watch Case Co., Elgin with case reference number below.
This timepiece has been disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It comes fitted on a new 12mm black leather strap with matching color buckle (designed for wire lug watches such as this), ready to worn and enjoyed. Elgin was arguably the best of the American watch makers when it came to Art Deco designs and I would have to say this honestly ranks in the TOP 5 that they ever did – if you agree perhaps you will consider placing a bid!

Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. Co. of Switzerland was established in the “Long Meadows” (translated: Longines) near the town of St. Imier. Winner of countless horology awards, their wristwatches are among the best in the world, on par with the “big boys” of the Swiss watch making profession including its chief rival Omega.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage Longines timepiece, a men’s Bullet Lug, Tank-form model that dates to ca 1944. This 10kt Yellow Gold filled watch is in triple-signed for Longines and in pristine shape inside and out. Of interest is the base metal of the case – not metal at all, in fact, but sterling silver. This was done with many American-made cases during WWII (especially those made for Gruen) as certain alloys were rationed for the war effort.
The case measures 36mm lug tip to lug tip and 20.5mm in width (22.5mm with winding crown). This works out to be a bit over 1-3/8 inches long by 13/16 of an inch wide, not including the crown. It is powered by its original 17 jewel, 9L caliber manual wind Longines mechanism that has been fully serviced by my trusted watchmaker David to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The antique white, matte enamel finished dial is in mint condition - professionally restored to its original status. It features a 60 minute outer chapter, raised gold “exploding” numerals and hour markers, original gold metal Baton-style hands and a recessed, square, sub-seconds dial with 60 second outer track and ‘sweep’ gold seconds hand. Signed LONGINES below the 12.
The solid glass crystal is in mint condition. The case is a two-piece design that is 10 Karat Yellow Gold filled over Sterling Silver (note the “S” stamped on the inside case lid) and in excellent PLUS condition. What really makes this model is its lugs – more like “Bullets” and very Art Moderne in design. The unmarked, gold finished winding crown is in excellent order as well, operating smoothly.
Turning the watch over I find that the back lid is free of any engravings or wear (past or present) and is in excellent PLUS shape, stamped “10k Gold Filled.” Inside is a clean, fully serviced manual wind mechanism, signed Longines Watch Co., Swiss – Seventeen 17 Jewels [Grade] 9L, LXW with serial number 6706760, dating the watch to ca 1944 as per available production records. The inside case is stamped Cased & Timed in the USA by Longines – Wadsworth, 10K Gold Filled with case number and the letter “S” for Sterling below.
This fine watch has been cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. Comes fitted with a new 14mm men’s length black alligator calf Swiss strap with matching color buckle. All in all a pristine condition vintage Tank form watch from one of Switzerland’s very best – you won’t be disappointed.

Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. Founded in 1926 by Jacob Schneider as Wullimann, Schneider, Nivada, the Nivada Watch Company of Gretchen, Switzerland was a prominent force within the watch industry for most of the 20th century. They produced a number of models over the years, including the Aquamatic, Antarctic, Depthomatic and (in 1940) a new watch line called “Croton.”
In my experience as a collector, Nivada Grenchen watches are of very high quality but still a “sleeper” brand when it comes to the general collecting public, much like Mido, Lucien Piccard or Wyler. As such, you can find some very high quality, unique models for less than your comparable Longines, Bulova or Omega.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following men’s Nivada “Waterproof” model – a larger size, solid stainless steel timepiece from the 1940s. This non-ordnance, WWII era military watch features a Swiss patented (Brevet +) hermetic design stainless steel case and is in excellent original condition inside and out.
Triple-signed, it measures a larger 42.5mm lug tip to lug tip and 35.5mm in width (38.5mm with original crown). In inches this works out to be just under 1-3/4” long by 1-3/8” wide, not

including the steel winding crown. My trusted watchmaker David has fully serviced its original 15 jewel, manual wind Swiss (AS 1130 caliber) mechanism and it runs smoothly and keeps accurate time.
The 100% original enamel finished Salmon (pink) color dial is in excellent condition – what a beauty and completely untouched since it left the factory almost 70 years ago. It features a 60 minute checkered outer track border, luminous finish Arabic numerals, original blue steel Diamond shaped hands with luminous fill and a recessed sub-seconds dial with engine-turned background, 60 second outer chapter and ‘sweep’ blue steel seconds hand. Signed NIVADA WATERPROOF below the 12. It is further signed SWISS MADE at the base of the dial.
The hardened acrylic crystal is in excellent condition. The two-piece Nivada engraved case is a hermetic design (Swiss patented) that requires removing the crown/stem to access the mechanism. It is stainless steel and in excellent overall condition. The original winding crown is stainless steel as well, in excellent shape and operating as it should.
Turning the watch over, I note that the back lid is free of any personal engravings or wear (a few light scratches perhaps) and is stamped with serial number 429,999. It is in excellent overall shape. As I can’t open this watch without taking it apart I had my watchmaker David take the photos of the mechanism and inside back lid. You will see that both the mechanism and inside case lid are hand engraved with the company name, number of jewels, etc. This was done by the American importer as such information was required to be put on mechanisms and cases imported from Switzerland whereas it was not required if the watch remained in Switzerland or Europe. The AS 1130 caliber mechanism is stamped 15 Jewels – Swiss Made and it is further hand signed “Nivada Watch Co., Unadjusted, NXG.” The inside case lid is finely engine turned and stamped BREVET + ACIER INOXYDABLE and is hand inscribed “Nivada Watch Co.” The stamping is French and translates as “Patented + Stainless Steel.”
This timepiece has been fully serviced (disassembled, cleaned, oiled & regulated) to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. Comes complete with a new 18mm black deBeer hand crafted lizard grain strap with steel buckle for a high quality combination. If you prefer a dark brown strap that’s fine too, just let me know. All in all a great vintage “Hermetic” military style timepiece from one of Switzerland’s better quality firms.

Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. There are nice old watches and then there are extraordinary old watches. I would argue that the following timepiece falls into the latter category, made by one of Switzerland’s best, the Longines Watch Co. of Switzerland for Tiffany & Co. of New York. This finely engraved watch is in excellent condition, dating to 1920 and crafted of 18kt Solid White Gold.
Founded by Ernest Francillon and Auguste Agassiz in the year 1832, the Longines was established in the “Long Meadows” (hence, Longines) near the town of St. Imier. Winner of countless horology awards, its wristwatches are truly among the best made in the world. Tiffany & Company is equally famous, founded by Charles Lewis Tiffany in New York City in 1837 (at 259 Broadway) and arguably the finest jeweler in the United States.
This cushion-form, wire lug watch measures 28mm lug tip to lug tip and 24mm in width (26.5mm with winding crown). This works out to be 1-1/8 inches long by 1 inch in width, not counting the winding crown. It is powered by its original 15 jewel, 3 adjustment Lognines mechanism that winds and sets smoothly while keeping very good, accurate time.
The enamel finished (over sterling silver) dial is in excellent condition, just as I obtained the watch and appearing to have been restored in the recent past. It features a 60 minute checkered outer track border, original blue steel hands and crisp Breguet-style black enamel numerals. Signed TIFFANY & CO below the 12 and further signed SWISS below the 6.
The new old stock, solid glass crystal is in excellent order. The three-piece 18 KARAT SOLID GOLD case is in excellent PLUS condition – a tour de force of beaded and floral engraved detailing – note the FLOWERS at each corner of the bezel, very nice! The domed white gold winding crown appears to be original and is in excellent shape, winding and setting as it should.
Turning the watch over I note that the 18k solid gold back lid is in excellent shape with absolutely no wear – it is tastefully monogrammed “E.M.F.” Inside I find a

Fifteen Jewel, manual wind movement (a 10.39 Grade, as stamped below the mechanism) that is signed 3 ADJS. – 15 JEWELS – LONGINES W. CO., SWISS The serial number is located below and reads #3,867,439 dating the watch to 1920 based on production records. The inside of the case lid is correctly stamped A.W. for A. Wittnauer (Longines parent company in the USA) and further stamped 18 K.W.G. – 10/39 with case reference number below. Please note that the “10/39” stamp is in reference to the caliber/grade of the mechanism.
This watch winds and sets smoothly and keeps very good, accurate time. Comes fitted on a new 14mm Suisse matte black leather strap especially designed for solid wire lug watches such as this and able to accommodate a wrist 5-3/4 inches to 7-1/2 inches in size. All in all a beautiful, early Art Deco timepiece whose vintage character should get noticed on your wrist.

They produced a number of models over the years, including the Aquamatic, Antarctic, Depthomatic and (in 1940) a new watch line called

“Croton.”
I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage timepiece from Nivada Grenchen, a men’s 14kt Solid White Gold model with a 12 Genuine Diamonds on the dial. This triple-signed “Croton” model dates to the early 1950s and is in pristine condition, complete with a higher-grade, rose gold finished mechanism.
The case measures 41.3mm lug tip to lug tip and 33.5mm in width (35mm with winding crown). This works out to be 1-5/8 inches long by 1-3/8 inches wide, including the crown. It is powered by its original 17 jewel, manual wind Nivada Grenchen mechanism that has been fully serviced by my trusted watchmaker David to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The silver enamel finished dial is in excellent condition – professionally restored to its original status and absolutely spotless. It features applied white gold hour markers, each set with genuine diamonds, original silver steel Baton-style hands and a recessed sub-seconds dial with engine-turned background and ‘sweep’ seconds hand. Signed CROTON NIVADA GRENCHEN below the 12 marker (with applied Coat of Arms insignia for Croton) and SWISS MADE at the base of the dial.
The hardened acrylic crystal is in excellent shape with no flaws. The case is a two-piece design that is 14 Karat Solid White Gold and it is in excellent condition with no flaws. The unmarked white gold finished winding crown is in excellent shape operates smoothly.
Turning the watch over I find that the 14k solid white gold back lid is in excellent PLUS condition with no wear or engravings. Inside I find a clean and fully serviced manual wind mechanism, signed Croton – Nivada S.A., Grenchen, P3A – [caliber] C2426 – Swiss Seventeen 17 Jewels . The inside case is finely engine turned (a mark of a Swiss made case) and stamped 14K GOLD, guaranteed to be 14kt solid white gold.
This fine watch has been cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. Comes fitted with a new 16mm black deBeer hand finished lizard (grain) calf leather strap with matching color buckle. All in all a fantastic and FLAWLESS diamond dial dress watch from a respected Swiss watch maker.

Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. Not until the First World War would the wrist watch be considered an everyday necessity for the gentleman, although their use by troops is noted during the Boer War, albeit limited. Prior to the Great War, watches were considered “women’s jewelry” and too effeminate for the discerning man. WWI would change this, putting the watch on the wrists of soldiers fighting in the trenches of Europe, this event having repercussions once the soldier returned home.
As one 1919 advertisement promoting wristwatches for gentlemen states, such devices were “manly watches for manly men – any man so out of date as to consider the wristwatch effeminate need only learn the kind of men who use them…the fighting men, the soldiers in the World War, the military and naval men the world over, the big game hunters, the aviators, motorists, yachtsmen.” By the end of the 1920s, wristwatch production would surpass pocket watch output at most U.S. factories and Swiss factories, a trend that became more pronounced over time.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following military officers timepiece, a hinged back, wire lug example that is 9ct Solid Rose Gold. This is a British market watch, made in Switzerland but cased and retailed in the UK. While essentially identical in design to the watches used during WWI, it dates to a few years later – 1924 to be exact.
The case measures 36.5mm lug tip to lug tip and 32mm in width (34mm including the rose gold crown). In inches this is 1-7/16” in total length by 1-1/4” in width, not including the winding crown. It is powered by its original 15 jewel, manual wind mechanism that has been fully serviced prior to auction, ensuring it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The original white porcelain enamel dial is in excellent overall condition, a desirable “Officers” dial with handsome Red 12, 60 minute checkered outer track, black enameled Breguet-style numerals, original Spade-style blue steel hands and a recessed sub-seconds dial with 60 second outer chapter and ‘sweep’ blue steel seconds hand. As with many British market military watches of this era it is not signed on the dial. There are two tiny fleabites (about 1mm each) at the edge of the dial but overall I would rank this dial as excellent, especially considering its original use and age.
The more recent gently domed crystal is in excellent, clear condition. The three-piece, hinged-back case is 9 Karat Solid Rose Gold and in great to excellent condition, there is one ding on the left case side (as shown) but otherwise very clean with solid, secure lugs. The rose gold finished winding crown, in excellent condition, appears to be a later replacement that works well with the watch, winding and setting smoothly.
Turning the watch over I see that the back lid is 9kt Solid Rose Gold and in great condition, complete with a nicely designed monogram that was probably added for the original owner. Taking a look inside (case back clicks shut nicely, hinge is secure) I find a clean and fully serviced mechanism that is signed SWISS MADE – 15 JEWELS. The inside of the case back is signed with a series of gold hallmarks and they include 9 – i – Leopard Hallmark - .375 – LA - 372,455. To translate, the 9 is for 9ct gold, the “i” is the London date code for 1924, the Leopard or Cat hallmark lets me know it is a London date code (the “i”) and .375 is for the gold content of 9k gold. The “LA” is the case maker initials.
This watch has been fully serviced prior to auction, ensuring it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It comes fitted on a new 12mm black pigskin wire lug strap with fold-over ends, especially designed for wire lug watches such as this. All in all beautiful timepiece that I could never seen going out of style – just the type of watch I personally love collect.

Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. The Jaeger-LeCoultre Watch Co. of Switzerland was established in Le Sentier, Valee de Joux in 1833 by Antoine LeCoultre. After 170 years it is still one of the most important manufacturers of ebauches (raw movements), and has supplied mechanisms to almost all the notable producers of luxury watches, including Vacheron & Constantin and Patek Philippe. Merging with the Alsatian watch factory of Edmond Jaeger in 1925, the name “Jaeger LeCoultre” soon appeared on wrist watch dials. They are a “watch collectors” watch and rank as investment-grade timepieces.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage timepiece from the LeCoultre firm, a ladies asymmetrical dress model in 14kt Solid White Gold that dates to the late 1950s. When it comes to Retro Modern, Eames-inspired designs LeCoultre had it figured, producing a series of uniquely shaped ladies watches during the 1950s and early 1960s.
Triple-signed, it measures 28mm end to end and 14.5mm in width (16mm with winding crown). This works out to be 1-1/8 inches long by 5/8 of an inch wide, including the crown and with the cord bracelet the overall length is just shy of 7 inches (6-7/8”), something I can make longer or shorter for the winner. My watchmaker David has fully serviced its original 17 jewel LeCoultre mechanism, insuring it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The ivory color, matte enamel finished dial is in flawless condition,

professionally restored to its original status. It features applied white gold hour markers and original silver steel hands. Signed LeCoultre below the 12 marker and Swiss at the base of the dial, hidden by the bezel.
The uniquely shaped crystal is in excellent condition and with no flaws. The original LeCoultre-signed case is 14 Karat Solid White Gold and in excellent condition as well, a wonderful “asymmetrical” design with pierced lugs. The winding crown is a matching white gold-finish and unmarked. It too is in excellent shape and operates smoothly.
Turning the watch over I see that the back lid is in excellent PLUS shape and stamped 14KT. as shown. Inside I find a high-grade Seventeen Jewel mechanism that is signed LeCoultre Co. – Seventeen 17 Jewels, [Caliber] 490/BW – Swiss – VXN . The serial number is 1,132,787. The inside case lid is stamped Cased and Timed in USA by LeCoultre - 314.
This watch has been disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It is fitted on a new old stock vintage 1950s black cord band with matching color fittings that measures 6-7/8” in wearable length – I can also make it longer or shorter for the winner at no charge, just tell me the size you need. Ladies and gentlemen, this is an excellent example of a mid-century “Retro Modern” Swiss timepiece. Being a LeCoultre also means it should prove to be a great investment over time.

Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers.
One of the best-known watch firms in the world today, the Movado Watch Co. of Switzerland took its name from the Esperanto word that translates as “Always in Motion.” Founded by Achille Ditesheim in 1881, he soon set up the first factory in La Chaux-de-Fonds, and the “Movado” name first appeared in 1906.
One of the first (if not ‘the’ first) watch companies to produce a wristwatch for men, its most famous early design was the Polyplan, followed by military timepieces and triple date watches.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage men’s timepiece from the Movado factory, a ridged case, fancy sculpted lug example that dates to the late 1940s. I don’t come across many dress model, military style Movado watches and this is a beauty, crafted of 14kt Solid Yellow Gold and in excellent condition.
Triple-signed, it measures 40mm lug tip to lug tip and 34mm in width (36mm with gold winding crown). This is a nice size for the period and it works out to be 1-5/8 inches long by just under 1-3/8 inches wide, not including the crown. It is powered by its original and higher-grade 15 jewel, manual wind Movado mechanism that has been fully serviced by my trusted watchmaker David to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The black enamel finished dial is in excellent condition – the original that has been professionally restored to its original status. Designed in the military tradition, it features a gold 60 second outer track border (calibrated to 1/5 of a second for precision), raised gold Breguet-style numerals, original gold metal Baton-style hands and a ‘sweep’ seconds hand with RED arrow tip. Signed MOVADO below the 12 and SWISS at the base of the dial.
The hardened acrylic crystal is new old stock and in mint condition, removed in photos as black dial watches are a bear to photograph. The Movado-signed case is 14 Karat Solid Yellow Gold and a true mid-century beauty with its ridged body and sculpted “claw” lugs. It is in excellent to mint condition – truly pristine. The gold-finished winding crown is unmarked (normal for Movado during the 40s) and in excellent order, winding and setting smoothly.
Turning the watch over I see that back lid is free of any wear or engravings (past or present) and in excellent to mint condition. Taking a look inside (by removing the bezel, then lifting the dial/movement out) I find an original Movado mechanism that is stamped Movado Factories, Swiss Made – 15 Jewels - 3961. The inside case back is signed MOVADO – WADSWORTH, 14K GOLD - T761,372, 44814.
This timepiece has been completely disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It is fitted on a new 17mm black deBeer hand crafted lizard (grain) calf leather strap with gold finished buckle, ready to be worn and enjoyed. Trust me when I say this is a truly a knockout of a watch – whoever gets this in the mail is going to be a very

The history of the Girard-Perregaux Watch Company begins in 1791, when the watchmakers Bautte and Mouline founded a factory in Geneva to manufacture watches. In 1856 the watchmaker constant Girard married Marie Perregaux and the unified firm of “Girard – Perregaux” came into being. In 1906 G. Perregaux acquired the earlier firm of Bautte and Mouline, and today the firm is located in La Chaux-de-Fonds. They have always made a name for themselves in the realm of wristwatches through their unique creativity and high quality mechanisms, one of a select few who produce many of its movements entirely in-house. Today, Girard Perregaux watches are among the most expensive timepieces money can buy.
Well you smart collectors, this is one watch that has lots of good old “Wrist” appeal – a men’s Girard-Perregaux “Gyromatic” (self-winding) model in excellent condition. This triple-signed timepiece dates to early 1950s and is quite striking with its flawless dial and “flying saucer” inspired stainless steel case, my photos do not do it justice.
It measures 40mm lug tip to lug tip and 34.5mm in width (35mm with recessed crown) or just under 1-5/8” long by 1-3/8” wide. It is powered by its original and higher grade, 17 jewel rotor automatic Girard-Perregaux mechanism that has been fully serviced by my talented watchmaker David to ensure it is running well and keeping accurate time.
The antique white, enamel finished dial is in mint condition – the original

metal dial that has been professionally restored and boy does it look nice. It features a 60 second outer chapter, raised silver numerals and dot-shaped hour markers, original Lance-style silver metal hands and a center ‘sweep’ original seconds hand. Signed Girard-Perregaux Gyromatic below the 12 and SWITZERLAND at the base of the dial.
The gently domed acrylic crystal is in excellent, clear condition with no flaws. The GP-signed case is solid stainless steel and in excellent PLUS shape – my photographs don’t really do it justice as it was hard to avoid reflections and glare on the bezel and lugs. Trust me when I saw it is SPOTLESS. The matching steel winding crown (unmarked) is recessed and in excellent condition, operating smoothly.
Turning the watch over I see that the screw-down, stainless back lid is in excellent shape, free of any wear or engravings past or present. Inside I find a high quality rotor automatic mechanism that is signed Girard-Perregaux & Co., Seventeen 17 Jewels – 47GU – 760, Swiss – GXM. The inside case lid is stampedGIRARD PERREGAUX 1791 – SWISS – STAINLESS STEEL – 69170221 R. Unlike many vintage Girard Perregaux watches you see today that were cased and timed in the USA, this example was made entirely in Switzerland, as noted by the inside lid markings.
This fine men’s watch has been cleaned, oiled & regulated to ensure it winds and sets effortlessly, keeping accurate time. It is fitted on a new 17mm black hand crafted deBeer Europa lizard grain strap with matching chromed steel buckle, a high quality band for a high quality watch. Hans Wilsdorf and Gruen were friends and neighbors in Switzerland (their factories were just yards away), and even agreed to market their watches as Rolex Gruen in Europe, but the Great Depression (and more urgent matters) prevented this.
I am pleased to offer for sale one of two truly beautiful ladies Gruen watches for sale this week, this being a “Cartouche Enameled Wristlet” from ca 1927. This 14kt White Gold (reinforced with metal) watch is in excellent condition inside and out, complete with its original finely engraved link bracelet and cabochon sapphire crown.
Triple-signed for Gruen (dial, case and mechanism), it measures 30mm end to end and 17mm in width (20mm with original beaded-edge Gruen crown). In inches this works out to be 1-3/16” by 5/8” wide, not counting the crown. It has been fully serviced prior to auction, ensuring its original 15 jewel, manual wind movement winding and setting smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The two-tone silver, enamel finished (over sterling base) dial is in mint condition – professionally restored to its exact original status. Features include black enameled “exaggerated” numerals, a 60 minute checkered inner track border and original blue steel, Spade-style hands. Signed GRUEN below the 12 and “SWITZERLAND” at the base of the dial, under the bezel.
The solid glass crystal is in mint condition. The case is marked “14K Gold Reinforced by Metal” which is another way of saying a very high quality 14 Karat White Gold Filled case, with about 80 to 100 microns of gold thickness – ten times what a gold electroplated Swiss watch has today. This case is in excellent, original condition and features finely engraved detailing and inlaid black enameling on all sides of the cut corner bezel, just beautiful. The original beaded edge, button-style white gold finished crown is a design unique to Gruen and in excellent order, winding and setting smoothly.
Turning the watch over I see that the back lid is complete with an intricate ivy leaf border and in excellent condition – no wear or engravings past or present. Inside I find a clean and higher-grade Fifteen Jewel Gruen movement that is signed FIFTEEN 15 JEWELS, FOUR 4 ADJ. - GRUEN GUILD – SWISS. The inside of the case lid is stamped GRUEN

It is fitted on what I believe to be its original 12kt White Gold Filled (as stamped) engraved link Art Deco bracelet. It is a good size to fit most wrists up to 6-1/2 inches or so. Hans Wilsdorf and Gruen were friends and neighbors in Switzerland (their factories were just yards away), and even agreed to market their watches as Rolex Gruen in Europe, but the Great Depression and more urgent matters prevented this.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage timepiece from the Gruen firm, a ladies Cartouche Model 80 from ca 1928. This 14kt White Gold Filled model is notable for its finely engraved panels above and below the dial, filled in with black enameling for a very Art Deco look.
Triple-signed, it measures 28mm end to end and 15.5mm in width (19mm with original sapphire tip winding crown). In inches this works out to be 1-1/8” long by 5/8” wide, not including the cabochon sapphire crown. It is powered by its original and high grade (Aegler factories) 833

caliber Gruen mechanism (identical to the Rolex 250 caliber) that has been fully serviced to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The silver, enamel finished dial is in mint condition, professionally restored to its original status and without flaw. It features a 60 minute checkered outer track border, black enamel numerals andblue steel Spade-style hands. Note the design work bordering the dial – what detail! Signed GRUEN below the 12 and SWITZERLAND at the base of the dial, below the bezel.
The solid glass crystal is in flawless condition. The case is stamped “14k Gold Reinforced by Metal” and this translates as a superior 14kt White Gold filled case with about 80 to 100 microns (thickness) of gold. In comparison, a new Swiss gold electroplated watch has about 8 to 10 microns of gold thickness. The case is in excellent overall condition and features the cutaway, decorative design work that makes the Cartouche 80 distinctive. The inlaid enameling is in excellent shape as well. The original cabochon sapphire winding crown is of a style unique to Gruen (due to its beaded edging) and in excellent shape as well, operating smoothly.
Turning the watch over I see that the back lid features a floral engraved border with flowers at each corner, in excellent condition. In the center it is tastefully engraved with a monogram in the Art Deco style. Peeking inside I find a clean and high-grade Fifteen Jewel Gruen Guild Series movement, a caliber 833 that is identical to the Rolex caliber 250 as Aegler made this movement for both companies. It is signed GRUEN GUILD – FIFTEEN 15 JEWELS, FOUR 4 ADJ. with the caliber number 833 and “SUISSE” stamped below the balance wheel.. The inside of the case lid is stamped GRUEN – 14K GOLD REINFORCED WITH METAL, WADSWORTH – 833 - 59.
This fully serviced Gruen Guild Cartouche watch winds and sets very smoothly while keeping accurate time. It is fitted on a new Swiss made 12mm matte black leather strap especially designed for solid wire lug watches such as this. It will fit a wrist anywhere from 5-1/5 inches to 7 inches and if you have a larger wrist let me know as I should be able to do something else that is longer. All in all a harder to find, beautiful example of a Cartouche Model 80 – if you think the photos look nice I bet you’ll be even more pleased when you see it on your wrist.

Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers.
