Welcome to the autumn edition of the Chwarae Teg Hive newsletter.

Every quarter our newsletter will deliver updates on today‘s modern working practices, forthcoming events and news.

Professional services firm PwC is the latest in a line of employers to launch a returnship programme to help people back into work after an extended break. The 12-week scheme „Back to Business‟ is open to all applicants,

however, it is predominately aimed at women wishing to return to work. Under the PwC scheme, participants will receive a week-long induction with training, which will cover both the firm‘s processes and procedures, including IT and softer skills such as personal brand, resilience, and networking. People on the programme will also have the opportunity to work on client-facing projects that draw on their experience and existing knowledge. PwC said it hopes the scheme will improve diversity at the firm and strengthen their pipeline of female future leaders. Read the full article here.

Netflix offer their employees 'unlimited' maternity and paternity leave, enabling employees to decide what is best for them and their family.

Introducing an unlimited maternity and paternity leave for its staff based in America, the firm said that employees would be allowed to take off as much time as they need during the first year after a child is born or an adoption. In the US women are only entitled to 12 weeks of statutory maternity leave and it is unpaid. “We want employees to have the flexibility and confidence to balance the needs of their growing families without worrying about work or finances. “Parents can return part-time, full-time, or return and then go back out as needed. We’ll just keep paying them normally, eliminating the headache of switching to state or disability pay. Each employee gets to figure out what’s best for them and their family, and then works with their managers for coverage during their absences." - Tawni Cranz, Chief Talent Officer, Netflix. The businesses on-going success depends on attracting and retaining the most talented people in their field and experience shows people perform better at work when they‘re not worrying about home. This new policy, combined with their unlimited time off, allows employees to be supported during the changes in their lives and return to work more focused and dedicated. UK employees are stifled by over-stuffy, rule-heavy workplaces, according to research by the CIPD. Data from the institute‘s latest Employee Outlook Survey, revealed that staff face significant hurdles at work, with ―unnecessary rules and procedures‖ coming joint top. The third-most irritating aspect for workers was office politics, identified as a constrictor of creativity by 24%. ―While improving productivity is a long-term project for the UK, in the shorter term, employers can help employees use their skills and ideas by focusing on developing leaders and line managers who empower rather than control staff and by designing jobs which provide sufficient autonomy,‖ Claire McCartney, research adviser, CIPD. Female representation on boards leads to better decision making

through diversity and UK top companies have reached a "major

milestone" in increasing the number of women in their boardrooms, but

more needs to be done.

At least a third of boardroom positions at Britain‘s biggest companies should be held by women by the end of the decade, according to a report, although it does not recommend that quotas are imposed. The government-backed report from Lord Mervyn Davies, who has been championing gender equality in the boardroom, shows that FTSE 100 companies have exceeded the target of having 25% women on their boards – more than doubling the number in 2011 when the target

was set. Lord Davies now says this should now be replaced by a new target of 33% of women board members at FTSE 350 firms by 2020. “Targets are good because they put data on the table that has to be measured, this just makes the conversation happen at the senior table and if the conversation happens, actions follow.” View full Guardian article here and access Women on Boards: Davies Review 5 Year Summary October 2015 here.

In partnership with CMI Cymru, Hive returned in October

bringing together employers from across the sectors in Wales, to explore modern working practices that are more appropriate for 21st Century working and help remove the barriers that hold women back from reaching their full potential and build rewarding careers. Across the 3 events 106 people attended from 61 different

organisations in Wales.

Sessions took place in Newport, Swansea and Wrexham and we were delighted to be joined by Mark Hodder. Mark works with the sciences of applied positive psychology and neuroscience to create happier and more successful workplaces. . Exploring Positivity, Motivation and Trust through an interactive workshop, we identified how increased positivity at work can create greater productivity, wellbeing and engagement at work. Positivity leads in turn to higher levels of motivation. Although science has discovered the main factors in motivation, many organisations are still not making the most of these techniques. Mark provided extensive research backed up with practical examples and we see that there are 3 key factors in creating enduring motivation: - Clarity of purpose that every decision is aligned with.

- Mastery, working to become ever more skilled at what we do.

- Control, giving back control over meaningful decisions at work.

For these 3 factors to create a truly flourishing workplace they must be underpinned by one

final factor, trust. The workshop provided many proven practical ideas for our Hive followers to

take away and use immediately in their workplaces.

“Be the change you want to see in your workplace!”

Thank you to everyone that joined us and made all of the sessions fun and interactive.

A special thank you to; our guest speaker Mark Hodder, our sponsor CMI Cymru and our

hosts; Lendlease, DVLA and Airbus Defence and Space.

The Management Shift Vlatka Hlupic “Humans aren‟t resources, so let‟s stop treating them that way.”

While people are often stated as a company's greatest asset, few

businesses have a clear model of leadership that improves engagement, removes barriers to innovation, and uncovers hidden

strengths in people and the organisation. Professor Hlupic identifies that organisations need to adopt a leadership style that

focuses on people, purpose and knowledge sharing, creating new

types of value.

Turn the Ship Around! A true Story of turning followers into leaders L. David Marquet

"Leadership should mean giving control rather than taking control and creating leaders rather than forging followers."

Imagine a work place where everyone engages and contributes their full intellectual capacity. A place where people are healthier and happier because they have more control over their work - a place where everyone is a leader.

Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action Simon Sinek

"It doesn't matter what you do, it matters Why you do it." With a little discipline, anyone can learn to inspire. ―Start With Why‖ offers an unconventional perspective that explains the reasons some leaders and organizations are more innovative, more profitable, command greater loyalties from customers and employees alike and, most importantly, are able to repeat their success over and over.

Trust Works! Ken Blanchard, Cynthia Olmstead and Martha Lawrence “Shows you how to identify your trust busters and strengthen your trust boosters"

In today‘s polarised society, building trust and sustaining it has never been more important or seemingly elusive. ―Trust Works!” provides a common language and essential skills that can replace dissension with peace and cooperation and help us all work together productively and in harmony.

South Wales Police will be

working with Chwarae Teg to deliver gender equality, starting with its own workforce, helping to build a Wales where women achieve and prosper, by championing gender equality in the workplace and becoming the latest Supporter of Chwarae Teg. Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner Sophie Howe welcomed the news saying: I am delighted that we have become Chwarae Teg’s latest Supporter and I look forward to working closely with them. ―We want to be the best at understanding the people and communities we serve and so it‘s important that our workforce is reflective of the communities of South Wales both in terms of the number of women police officers and staff, particularly at a senior level and in terms of the proportion of BME officers. We have made great progress towards gender

equality at the most senior level which is encouraging but overall we remain under-represented by female officers and we are working to increase representation above Inspector level, where women are particularly under-represented. As a new Chwarae Teg Supporter, we hope our thematic review will be able to uncover some of the barriers to recruitment and progression and inform an action plan to improve our female representation. This is an important part of our wider strategy to make our workforce more gender reflective and our involvement at the — International Association of Women Police conference — also provides us with an excellent opportunity to widen our research to female officers from other forces and countries. We will be conducting a survey there to ask about existing barriers, including – for example, their promotion experiences, flexible working opportunities and organisational culture.‖

If you believe the world will be a better place when men and women are more equally represented across different sectors and at different tiers within organisations, join the charge by becoming a Supporter.
