Motorola Solutions’ initiatives intend to meet the most urgent needs of a region in which some of the most relevant areas are still deficitary in reaching final social development.

2013 has been a year of great efforts on Social Responsibility matters, but it has been a year of great satisfactions as well. Focused on doing our part to make Latin America grow, we conducted 14 programs in 13 countries in the region, which met the goal of enhancing the Public Safety and Education of their inhabitants. “Stories of Change” is a report which shows, by means of a series of testimonies, how more than 8,000 people could drive a positive change in their lives through different programs. We have learned from our experience working with communities that in order for initiatives to really make a difference, they must get us close to each individual to help him or her satisfy any real unmet needs. And that is what we did. This material compiles stories from different persons and communities who were given a chance to improve their conditions.

We are aware of the fact that enhancing security derives in better quality of life. Therefore, we launched education programs addressed to the community and to the security forces in order to provide them all with the necessary tools in emergency situations. In 2013, we also formed part of the team that served the communities most affected by the storms that hit most of the territory of Mexico.

We further understood that it is of the essence that we offer people the chance to be self-sufficient in the future and generate more value in our society. This way, we intend that study opportunities reach those persons in need but those who are highly willing to improve their lives. Our programs made available to hundreds of people a tool that will provide them with a change to improve their lives.

We believe that we have a role to play in our environment. Many of the programs we started up this year provide strong, ongoing answers over time, increasingly expanding their scope to more beneficiaries. This year we have attained significant Social Responsibility goals. But our duty does not end here. We still have many challenges ahead to overcome and we will undertake such mission with the dedication and commitment we always do. We will keep on working so that the communities of our region can get a better life quality.

A SECOND CHANCE FOR THE HEROES

IN COLOMBIA

In Colombia, there are flesh and bone heroes who risk their integrity every day to defend their country and to protect each of the 47 million Colombians. More than 9,000 of these heroes, including police officers, land, sea, and air soldiers, have been hurt and need to recover their life projects.

Thus, a program was designed to reward those soldiers wounded in combat and disabled for what they sacrificed to defend their country.

Together with the Government of Colombia and with the organization Give to Colombia, 65 hero victims of antipersonnel mines were given a chance to gain access to basic and higher studies, enabling them to continue being productive, develop professionally, and reenter the labor market to give a new heading to their lives.

at Arauca department told what this new opportunity means in his life: “Going back to school has not been easy for me. I was used to living in the jungle and I had not caught a pencil in eight years. But I have learned to adapt to studying, and somehow the accident ended up being a disguised blessing. The opportunity we have been given (…) to complete our studies has opened new doors for us. Next year, I will be able to make my dream of graduating from high school true, and after that I would like to study accounting, and maybe start my own business”.

Education is just the beginning of their overall rehabilitation. These Colombian heroes found a new opportunity, another way of rebuilding the dreams they once had, with persistence and thrust. This program gave them hope back.

CRITICAL COMMUNICATION

WORKING FOR A MORE EFFECTIVE

IN MEXICO

How can an institution contribute to improve the life of communities and of the environment where they live? Undoubtedly, making any changes that may offer better security may significantly improve their quality of life.

Internet and connectivity have opened endless possibilities to fulfill this goal. Therefore, the purpose of the initiative was to identify how new technologies may leverage the growth of public safety in Mexico and analyze which are the opportunity areas in the sector.

The Latin American Citizenship Institute started a project to assess the impact of the use of IT on

governmental agencies responsible for the safety of citizens in 31 states and in the Federal District. By means of a series of interviews to focal groups at different institutions, for the purpose of gathering their opinions about the way in which the use of different technologies impacts on their everyday activities.

The data compiled will be analyzed and any findings will be submitted to the authorities and to the public opinion to raise awareness of the benefits derived from the use of IT in the actions offering security to citizens.

With this collaboration, the insecurity issue in Mexico may be

CRIME ANALYSIS TO IMPROVE

IN ARGENTINA, CHILE AND PERU

“Understanding the crime mechanics is a key factor and the starting point to reduce crime and improve security”, stated Patricio Tudela, a representative of Paz Ciudadana Foundation. To that effect, a program was held for the second time in a row fostering Crime Analysis in Latin America. Crime Analysis is a technique which makes it possible to understand which are the criminal behavior patterns and which is the best way of getting ready to prevent them or

to respond to them, by means of statistical programs.

This year, the second edition of the program “Fostering crime analysis skills and technologies to reduce crime in the main cities of Latin America’s Southern Cone” was expanded to 9 Latin American countries. The action, carried out by Paz Ciudadana, trained more than 220 police officers and institutions on criminal prosecution and analysis techniques to contribute to crime prevention and to offer

The program has directly benefited more than 1,400 people so far, providing the institutions responsible for security with an important tool that will enable them increase efficacy in controlling and prosecuting crime. However, the benefit will reach much more people. A better public safety will enhance the quality of life of thousands of inhabitants.

AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE CHILDREN

IN THE CARIBBEAN

There are men whose days last more than 24 hours. Men who risk their lives to protect each citizen of the Caribbean islands. They may look like ordinary men wearing uniforms, but actually, they are extraordinary men. Under their uniforms, right on their hearts, they wear hero plates.

Each day, Officer Brown says goodbye to his wife and daughter, before leaving on his patrol to watch his city streets. Although he knows that his own life is in danger to protect the community, he starts every day with courage, determination, and trust. Every night, Officer Brown gets back home tired, but happy. He knows that his work has made a difference. He thinks of his daughter and he feels peace of

mind. She managed to make her dream of becoming a professional come true. The officer feels that he honored his commitment to his community, his institution, and his country. Also to his own family.

This is the purpose of this initiative. The Scholarship Fund of the Association of Caribbean Commissioners of Police (ACCP) has been contributing to the education of the Caribbean police officers’ children since 2007. This year, just like Officer Brown was able to provide his daughter with the possibility of receiving professional education, other nine children of police officers were granted scholarships to continue with their tertiary or university studies. Students who lacked the resources necessary to continue with their

education are now provided with a chance to do it. Officer Brown and his colleagues will remain an essential element for Public Safety in the Caribbean but, at the same time, these heroes do make a difference in their children’s lives.

““When I grow up, I want to become a police officer”, “I would like to work in an ambulance”. In our childhood, we always dream of being heroes. So, what could be better for any child than learning to manage risk situations with his or her own people?

In Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, and Peru, 4,462 9-to-10 year old children from private schools and state schools learned how to act under emergency situations. At the workshops, the children had a chance to ask questions to a firefighter, a police officer or some

other agent about their daily jobs. By means of different game tools and following their teachers’ guidelines, the children understood that whenever any risk situation arises, they may give an alert in time by calling the pertaining public forces.

“Thanks, Mariana and the DHN (Hydrography and Navigation Office). Let me tell you that your visit was really nice. I also want to thank Pablo and Yesi for teaching us more, and for helping us understand about earthquakes and tsunamis, and how to act in

any of these situations”, thanked Camila Vargas, a 5th form girl who understood that sometimes, emergencies cannot be prevented, but they may be properly handled with the necessary tools. The “Connected for Security” program was carried out by Foro 21 and by the Ibero-American States Organization. The program was focused on taking care of the community by preparing the youngest community members to face critical situations. A phone call made in time, to the proper public agency, may save the lives of thousands of families in danger.

FIRST, A TECHNOLOGICAL COMPETITION

IN MEXICO

First Robotics Competition was the focal point for a moment. Hundreds of young persons from different parts of the world joined their efforts, their motivation, and their knowledge on science to create, on a teamwork basis, a robot able to launch flying discs and to build 90-inch high pyramids that let them win the contest.

More than 40 students from Monterrey Technological Team, Mexico City Campus, took part in the event. Nautilus4010, as they called themselves, was the access

door to a fascinating world which encouraged them to make science a way of life.

Martín Mauro Cervantes, a member of the team said: “Nautilus 4010, which is associated to FIRST Robotics Competition, was one of the best experiences of my life, because working with this team helped me make some final decisions about what I am going to study. Carrying out this project taught me that team working is essential in business life and it applies to business every day.

More than 40 students participated in the First Robotics Competition, building a robot.

At the beginning, it was very hard for me to work in teams, but now, I can work better with other people and I understood that it is not necessary to do all by myself.” Nautilus4010 convened young

persons with multidisciplinary knowledge, since in addition to engineering other areas such as administration and logistics were put into practice to create a company with competitive goals. Not only did this initiative

encouraged them and taught them about science, but it also gave them the experience necessary to work in teams.

Two of the most important sports events in the whole world are coming soon, and they will both be held at Brazil. The Soccer World Cup in 2014 and the Olympic Games in 2016 will revolutionize the country, convening millions of fans eager to live the sports events with the highest number of supporters in history.

Young Brazilians are ready. One thousand young Brazilians have been trained with the +

Opportunities + United Program, organized by the SITAWI Brazilian organization. Thanks to the English lessons they received, they may be more easily hired to better serve the thousands of tourists that will visit the country. The USD 50,000 grant will help the youngest community members maximize job opportunities.

This initiative fosters the social and economic development of the country by investing in what is

the most important matter for any nation: form young people to learn the value of work so that they may drive the country’s growth in the future.

1,000 young Brazilians were given English lessons to increase their job opportunities.

DIGITAL TALENTIN COSTA RICA

In the neediest areas of Costa Rica, thousands of teenagers drop the formal education system, leaving the possibility of living a better life behind. They are discouraged teenagers who do not believe in the possibility of changing their future on their own. The truth is that their only chance to give their lives a new heading is based on education. How can they be encouraged to see studying as an opportunity?

The Digital Talent program has been working for 3 years in the personal development of each of these young persons. An IT programming educational model was created together with the Omar Dengo Foundation. By means of this program, 66 teenagers were reconnected to formal education and found a new path toward a professional development. Jose Daniel, from the 25 de Julio

community, San José, was part of the program: “Digital Talent is a very interesting program. This project helped me improve myself and overcome any challenges posed. What I enjoyed most of the workshop was that I could learn new stuff and improve myself.”

Digital Talent managed to attract the attention of students, to cause them to get committed and make them understand that their chances of self-improvement will always be higher if they study. The program developed each teenager’s potential capacity, encouraging him or her to think in technology and consider it a tool to make his or her dreams come true.

STRENGTHENING OUR

IN GUATEMALA, PANAMA AND EL SALVADOR

Suelen is the name of a twelve-year old girl who suffered a wasp bite. She was allergic to the poison, so she could die because her airways could close. All other students were astonished and her teacher was despair. Fortunately, Arsenio Pérez, another teacher who had attended a first aid course of the “Strengthening Our Hero Responders” program less than a month before, knew that it was crucial that they took the girl to a medical center right away, because

she was at risk. His quick action saved the girl’s life.

The story, told by La Estrella de Panamá newspaper, is a clear example of the importance of training citizens on first aid, so that they may handle emergency situations and save lives.Central America is one of the regions with the highest probabilities of suffering natural disasters and high violence rates. Communities are

police officers, firefighters, and members of the civil society on first aid. The program conducted in El Salvador and Guatemala for the second year in a row, provided for the organization of municipal brigades and the integration of government institutions, so that the answer in emergency situations may be effective and immediate.

The program prepared citizens to be the best possible heroes they may be. It did not matter how far communities were; what did matter was to get to them, because in emergency situations, those are the places where the fewest people may help. Now, every citizen has the possibility of saving lives in his or her own hands every day.

HELPING MEXICO AFTER

IN MEXICO

In 2013, Mexico was hit by “Manuel” and “Ingrid” storms. The outcome was dramatic: 40 deceased, more than 58,000

people deprived of their homes and 24 states seriously affected. In solidarity with the people who lost everything in these natural disasters, a 25 thousand dollar grant was conferred to the Mexican Red Cross to support the victims.

More than 1,500 Motorola employees in the City of Mexico and of Reynosa plant, in Tamaulipas, showed their

INCLUSION AND EQUAL OPPORTUNITY

FOSTERING THE INCLUSION OF

IN BRAZIL

CHILDREN WITH DIFFERENT ABILITIES

The world needs actions aimed at fostering the educational inclusion of disabled people. It is necessary to break barriers and open doors for them to fulfill their goals and enjoy a productive life.

Escola Classe 113 Norte has been working hard so that their more than 300 children from 6 to 12 years old with physical and mental disabilities, such as hearing impairment, intellectual disability, Down syndrome and

global developmental disorder, may receive first-class education.

Thus, for the second year in a row, in hand with the Brazilian Army, the school could make some reforms in its facilities to enable children to move more easily. “The mere fact that he has a playground to share with friends, without having to worry about the possibility that he may fall down, because there is a ramp, is very important. That means everything to him! It helped a lot!

The facilities were improved to enable 300 disabled children to receive better education.

I do not have the words to say thanks”, stated Esther de Sousa, mother of Daniel, a pupil at Escola Classe 113.

Now, the school is ready to include children born with physical disabilities, but who developed awesome abilities. The challenge will be to boost such abilities so that they may have a chance to progress in their lives and make their dreams come true.

FOSTERING THE INCLUSION OF CHILDREN WITH DIFFERENT ABILITIES

ITINERANT PREVENTION SIMULATOR

IN MEXICO

Years ago, Virginia Sendel de Lemaitre lived one of the most shocking tragedies any woman may suffer: she lost her daughter Michelle and her grandson, Mauricio, who was only five years old in a home fire. It was then that the initiative of creating an organization to help fire victims arose. This is how she became the founder and president of Michou y Mau Foundation.

According to the Mexico State’s Health Institute (Instituto de Salud del Estado de México), there has been a yearly average of 113,531 burnt patients in Mexico over the last 5 years. The initiative that taught children how to recognize dangerous situations and avoid being burnt in a didactic way was initiated under the theme “If we

don’t want children to get burn, we should teach them on how to prevent burns”.

Education is the key to avoid all those accidents. Therefore, a bus was remodeled to become a mobile interactive prevention module, with 3D plasma display screens simulating the family habitat and the construction of a model home. The module informed of the dangers to which children may be exposed and educated 200 families on how to prevent those risks by means of simple easy-to-do actions.

The campaign aimed at getting the victims of large burns to survive with a good quality of life, but what’s even more important, the it aimed at preventing accidents
