    Pop Up City

    Overview

    Cleveland Stories

Pop Up City is a tool or activating vacant properties, testing ideas or uture urban development, andcreating short-term, portable places o urban activity. Te program was established by the Cleveland

Urban Design Collaborative (CUDC) at Kent State University as a way to shine a spotlight on someo the more interesting underused buildings and sites in a depopulating city.

Instead o ocusing on permanent development, Pop Up City enables residents to re-make the city everyday just the way we want it through short-term events and temporary interventions. Ten itdisappears and we start all over again tomorrow.

Pop Up City has been involved in over 10 temporary use projects, including:

Leap Night (Feb. 2008) - A trans ormation o the Flats East Bank into an entertainment venuecomplete with ood vendors, snowboard rail competition, skating rink and bon res. Projectsupporters included Boston Mills-Brandywine, Civic Innovation Lab and Te Wolstein Group.

Electric Roller Disco ech (Aug. 2009) - For one night, the vacant third oor o the Lef ElectricBuilding was reprogrammed as a wildly popular indoor roller skating rink. Partners included theCleveland Executive Fellowship and St. Clair Superior Development Corporation.

Te Bridge Project (Sept. 2009) - Te lower level o the Detroit-Superior Bridge was re-opened tothe public or a two day event including installations and per ormances by local artists, drawingover 8,000 attendees. Partners included Ingenuity Festival and All Go Signs.

Cleveland Stories: true until proven otherwise is an investigation into the real and imagined history o the city o Cleveland. Tis project was intitiated by Kent State Universitys Cleveland Urban DesignCollaborative (CUDC) in collaboration with the Cleveland Institute o Art. It will take place in 2011 with support rom the George Gund Foundation and Cuyahoga Arts and Culture.

Cleveland Stories has three components: a journal publication, gallery exhibition and neighborhoodinterventions.

Te 2011 issue o the CUDCs annual journal, Urban In ll, will be devoted to historical and ctionalaccounts o Clevelands paststories that are grounded in the physical environment and speci cgeographies o the city. Te journal will have two sections:

Part 1 | Strategies and methods will look at narrative-based approaches to urban design anthat the physical orm o a city can be manipulated to reveal hidden stories.

Part 2 | Short Stories for a Shrinking City will focus on Clevelands stories and the waynarratives can be translated into public space design. In efect, we would like to re-write Clevelandshistory and use the citys narratives as a creative springboard or temporary, place-based designinterventions.

    Proposal

    the Hipp Deck

Combining the event planning experience o Pop Up City with the much anticipated book releaseorCleveland Stories: True Until Proven Otherwise , the Hipp Deck will trans orm the upper level o

the 780 Euclid Ave. parking garage into a unique urban public space and live per ormance venue orone spectacular evening.

Te event will recall the sites past as the location o the Hippodrome Teater, a nationally renown4,000 seat per ormance venue, which hosted legendary acts such as Sarah Bernhardt, Al Jolson, W.C.Fields and Will Rogers. A well-known theater company or musical act will be secured to per ormon the top oor o the garage, enhanced with velvet ropes, dramatic lighting and riendly ushers.Te lower levels o the garage will retain their current use as parking and event attendees will beencouraged to park their cars in the acility. Te upper level will also envision a more verdant uturecity by staging small, temporary green spaces along the deck or guests to enjoy. Te Hipp Deck willembody a new narrative, weaving the past, present and uture into a one-o -a-kind hybrid landscape, hal way above and below the city.

Based on previous events, approximately 300 attendees are expected.Te pre erred date or the Hipp Deck would be be ore the colder weather begins in mid-October and on a night without an eventscheduled at nearby venues. Te pre erence is or an evening that would otherwise have low parking garage usage, in order to maximizepotential pro tability or the garage operator. Our initial researchshows that October 8, 2011 could be a avorable evening with noIndians game or event scheduled at Quicken Loans Arena.

    enative date: Saturday, October 8, 2011 6 - 9pm (sunset at 7pm)
