Dear Volunteers,

Congratulations to the board members installed at the luncheon on April 9 for the 2018-2019 fiscal year. We look forward to working with you.

It has been an exciting few months for Martin Health System. In January, an affiliation between Martin Health Frances Langford Heart Center and Cleveland Clinic Heart & Vascular Institute was announced. In March, we sent an email from Rob Lord, in which he said: “Martin Health and Cleveland Clinic share a philosophy of providing exceptional patient care, which is why the cardiovascular affiliation has brought tremendous excitement to our community. We have enjoyed our partnership with Cleveland Clinic as we work through the details of the cardiovascular affiliation. That experience has reinforced the value of developing a stronger relationship with one of the premier health care providers in the world and we look forward to what opportunities may be ahead.” We know that both organizations bring so much to the table and share similar ideas on providing exceptional patient care to the communities they serve.

Peace of MindThrough feedback from patients and each other, we realize we can be more mindful of our conversations with everyone. While we know that no one would intentionally upset folks in any of our facilities, it still happens. We want to create peace and minimize stress at Martin Health. To do that, we must avoid discussing sensitive topics such as politics, elected officials and gun control. We are a melting pot of opinions and differing views. Any discussion of these sensitive topics adds stress and tension to the environment and has other negative outcomes as well.

There may be times when a patient or visitor brings up a hot topic and that can make it difficult. Should that happen, it is fine to redirect the conversation and even to say, with a smile, that while here at Martin Health; we keep our political opinions to ourselves to avoid upsetting people. You may then ask them a question to change the subject. Other times, you may be chatting with a like-minded fellow volunteer or associate and someone brings up a hot topic. Please gently remind them to avoid the subject(s). What people don’t realize, is that those conversations are sometimes overheard and can be offensive, to someone else, leaving them with negative feelings.

Our priority is to provide peace of mind, so steering clear of these highly charged topics is critical. We want people to be calm and relaxed and our role is critical in providing an atmosphere that does not encourage topics that may create a conflict.

Most of our seasonal volunteers have gone North and we are anxiously awaiting the start of the teen volunteers in June, to help fill in some of the staffing gaps.

To those of you that are moms, we wish you a Happy Mother’s Day!

Thank you for continued commitment and dedication to Martin Health System.

Hugs,

The beautiful new pediatric unit at Tradition Medical Center features eight private patient rooms with bathrooms and showers in each room. The unit will have many family-friendly features including:

• Sleeping accommodations in each room for a parent/caregiver to comfortably stay with their child.• A playroom with age-appropriate toys and a PlayStation® video game system.• A PlayStation® video game console in each patient room.• A family room with computer work station and mini-kitchenette.• Washer/dryer access for families.

The pediatric unit will serve children from infancy to age 17. It will be staffed by pediatric hospitalists, who treat a wide range of childhood illnesses and injuries, as well as patient-centered care from nurses and staff specifically trained in pediatric care.

We believe the new pediatric unit at Tradition Medical Center will be an exceptional benefit for our growing community of young families.

Tradition Medical Center NEWSSmiles, laughs and giggles were prevalent on the floors at TMC. Why? Our therapy dogs, Cooper and Sebastian, are here. Their visits are a joy to our patients and the staff. Look for them on Wednesdays.

Many thanks to the gift gallery for having a wonderful selection of Easter gifts and candy.

We had a lovely time at the installation luncheon. It was a beautiful location and a chance to chat with other Auxiliary members. I am so pleased to have the honor of being your vice president. Thank you all for attending and if you have never been to one of our special luncheons, please join us next year.

Myra Bags - Fashion that is environmentally friendly.Come in and see our new and exciting line of handbags and totes. As the saying goes…”one person’s trash is another person’s treasure”.Each item is unique and they are partially made from recycled army surplus canvas. The markings, stitches and other little blemishes found in the material adds to the vintage/rustic inspired look of this product. There is a style to suit many needs for all ages.

They would make a great Mother’s Day gift!

Volunteers Continue to Care on the Spot - Balla-Rena Jones

This month, Balla-Rena Jones was selected from the Caring on the Spot Cards that were submitted. Balla-Rena volunteers for Spiritual Care at Tradition Medical Center. She was recognized by a security officer for “observing a very distraught, upset visitor crying in the lobby”.

She was able to calm and soothe the visitor and stayed with the visitor while she visited her terminally ill husband. She offered assistance to the entire family. Thank you, Balla-Rena, for providing people with peace of mind!

We know that each and every day you all make a difference in the life of our patients and visitors.

Remember to recognize your fellow volunteers and associates with Caring on the Spot cards when you see them demonstrating the Martin Health Way and our iCare values. You can find the Caring on the Spot cards in the volunteer office or ask an associate for one.

If you do fill one out, please give it to the person whom you are recognizing and compliment them on what you observed on the spot.

The start of summer is here!Another “season” is behind us and we will miss all of our fellow volunteers that return to their summer homes. As we wish them a wonderful summer, we welcome our new group of teen volunteers. They fill a very important role during the summer months when we are short-staffed. We are grateful to have them here and appreciate the time that they give to Martin Health. As an added bonus, they are fun to be around!

We will be combining issues of Highlights during the summer. You will be receiving a June/July issue around the beginning of July and an August/September issue around the beginning of September. We will resume our monthly schedule starting with the October 2018 issue.

During the summer months, please make sure you read any messages that are on the kiosk when you sign in, along with any emails that are sent. There will be reminders of events that may be taking place along with other important issues that arise.

As a reminder, there are no monthly meetings during the summer months. The next General Meeting will be Monday, October 1 at St. Mary’s Great Hall. Details will be in the August/September issue of Highlights.
