We shower them with flowers, candy, cards, beautiful jewelry, fine dining and lots of hugs and kisses. Love is such a beautiful emotion. We need more of it in the world. Fortunately, we see Auxilians doing this every day (minus the fine dining and jewelry). For many years, it was celebrated on Washington’s actual birthday, February 22. However, in 1968 Congress changed the holiday to the third Monday in February. While it is now called “Presidents’ Day” by many (in honor of all the United States Presidents), it is still officially called Washington’s Birthday by the federal government. Government workers, schools and the post office close that day, but the hospital never closes, and our volunteers still come to work! YOU ARE THE BEST! Dear Volunteers,

These are exciting times at Martin Health. We know becoming part of Cleveland Clinic will enhance our opportunities as a provider of excellent health care.

Navigating through change can be exciting and challenging all at the same time. New things will be introduced, and some things may go by the wayside, but our focus will always be on the patient. We are all on tiptoe anticipating what will happen. On a personal note, we may wonder things like “will our uniforms change” and “will volunteers operate in the same ways as before”. For now, we don’t know the answers to those types of questions, but rest assured, as we learn more information, we will share it with you.

When we have news, we will send out emails and post it on the kiosks. If you ever have questions or hear rumors, feel free to ask Volunteer Services. We are happy to give answers, if we have them. Our mantra is, “Let’s wait for things to roll out, then roll with it!” Change doesn’t happen overnight. We’ll keep you informed but ask that you give things time to evolve. Sit back and observe, and allow time for the new processes to unfold.

One thing we have already discovered is that there will be many meetings. What this means to Volunteer Services, is that some of our previously scheduled meetings may have to be rescheduled or cancelled. We will inform you when these changes occur and ask for your understanding when it does happen.

We would like to thank all volunteers for their commitment and service. A huge shout out to the Auxiliary board members and the chairpersons of each line of service. We couldn’t do it without you! Remember, communication is a two-way street. If your chairperson or another volunteer reaches

out to you to substitute or with a question, please give them the courtesy of a return email, phone call or text. If you can help a fellow volunteer by filling in when asked, it is most appreciated by the volunteer and the chairperson. If you are looking for a substitute, offer to switch days, whenever possible. Scheduling is challenging, but if we work together, it will work out better for everyone!

We are preparing the Auxiliary annual directory for distribution at the April installation luncheon. It is a listing of all Auxiliary members which provides names, addresses, home and cell phone numbers, as well as email addresses. If you have had any changes to your contact information since last year, please contact Kelly or Suzanne, preferably by email.

If you wish to restrict some or all your contact information from the directory, please complete a declination form. You may contact Volunteer Services if you would like a waiver form to complete. We must receive all signed waivers by February 15, 2019, or your contact information will be included in the directory.

Thank you for being a part of our organization and sharing your time with us!

Hugs,

From Patient Experience Dear Volunteers,

As we enter this “new day” for our health system, we all feel a bit of excitement and anticipation for what’s to come in the year ahead. To see these two great organizations come together—and be a part of it—is a historical moment and truly a privilege for each of us.

Still, we must remain focused on our patients. Our busy season is upon us and many of us may be challenged in our role to consistently provide peace of mind for our patients and each other through exceptional, personalized, compassionate care. Remember that intentional words and acts can make a real and lasting impact and help provide peace of mind. Intentional words and acts include:

• Refreshing and encouraging one another. If you see a colleague looking rushed or a little gloomy, check in and lift his/her spirits. If you are personally feeling rushed and a bit overwhelmed, take a moment, breathe and re-set. When we take care of ourselves and each other, we are better able to care for our patients and their families with kindness and compassion.

• Delight everyone with kindness. Have you heard of random acts of kindness? Consider consistent acts of kindness. Imagine if we hard-wired acts of kindness into our everyday work flow with every patient, every time (making eye contact and calling patients by their name in appreciation, walking people to their desired destination, standing up to greet people, always providing a warm welcome and a fond farewell).

Season Challenge (January - March 31, 2019) The Office of Patient Experience conducts a Season Challenge during our busy season. The Season Challenge supports our associates in maintaining exceptional patient-centered care at a time when the demand is high and is designed to:

• Engage all patient-facing departments in supporting one another as they strive to consistently improve their patients’ experience.

• Recognize non-clinical support areas that receive the most Caring on the Spot cards.

• Recognize winning teams and highest-ranking departments with special celebrations and signage during Patient Experience Week (end of April).

Please remember to encourage and recognize your colleagues, support staff, physicians and front-line staff by giving them a Caring on the Spot card when you witness them going above and beyond to provide peace of mind for our patients and each other. You will make their day and may help their team (or yours) win the Season Challenge!

We are so grateful for each of you! From greeting and transporting patients, to running our gift shops and participating in special projects, you are invaluable to our ability to serve the Treasure Coast community. Thank you!

With appreciation, Your Patient Experience Team

The following outlines how and when you should cast your vote.

Timeline For Annual Election

Thrift Shop ResultsOur fiscal year is now nine months old (beginning April 2018 to present) and we finished with $161,538 in sales for that time period. Compared to prior year sales of $102,733, we realized a 57% increase ($58,765.) We have now adjusted our estimate for the 2018-2019 fiscal year annual sales to be in excess of $200,000. We have three months left to accomplish this and I’m sure Team Thrift is up to the challenge!

Our volunteers are to be commended for performance resulting in these truly dramatic sales results. They did an outstanding job manning, stocking and selling our donated inventory. Our Christmas and New Year’s inventory is either gone or what’s left is stored for next year’s holiday season. Which leaves us in need of donations after smashing fourth quarter sales! If you are starting your year by re-organizing or re-decorating, please keep us in mind. Your donations are greatly appreciated!

Social media continues to be a successful advertising tool for the Thrift Shop. Our yearlong social media exposure, under

Thrift Shop Volunteers, Theresa Goodman, Hilary Heaney and Marietta Gough

the direction of Chris Arnold (MHS Marketing) has allowed us to reach new customers as well as donors. Accolades to our President, Nancyann Taylor and Volunteer Services Program Coordinator, Kelly McIntyre, for their support and guidance as we strive to reach rather lofty levels of sales and customer satisfaction. We also appreciate the maintenance staff of Martin Health who keep us clean and debris free, ready to do business daily.

Thanks to all of you for your efforts!Submitted by Carolyn Michaud, Thrift Shop Coordinator

Martin MedicalGIFT GALLERYAn autistic little boy recently walked into the Martin Medical Gift Gallery and spotted a dinosaur in the stuffed toy section.

He immediately ran to it and hugged it tightly. His mother explained he is obsessed with dinosaurs. She saw the gleam in his eye and purchased the stuffed animal for him.

A few days later, she returned to the gift gallery to explain excitedly to our volunteers how he constantly hugs that dinosaur and it has changed her little boy’s life. Sometimes a little spark can ignite a remarkable fire!

Quote of the MonthFrom Nancyann

In Memoriam

HELPING PEOPLE IS GOOD FOR YOU!It makes your heart healthy!Studies show that adults over 50 who volunteer four hours a week reduce their risk of developing hypertension by 40%. Doing good lowers stress hormones and blood pressure.

It improves your self-esteem!In a recent survey of more than 2,500 volunteers, 93% reported better moods and 88% felt more confident after donating their time to help others.

It lengthens your life!Regularly helping others releases chemicals in the body that boost your immunity and lower risk of depression, factors that can increase your life span 22 percent!

February is American Heart Month. Did you know that heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States? And it doesn’t just happen to older adults. It is happening more and more often to younger adults. This is partly because conditions leading to heart disease are happening at younger ages.

Half of all Americans have at least one of the top three risk factors for heart disease (high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and smoking). Fortunately, you can make healthy changes to lower your risk of developing heart disease. Controlling and preventing risk factors is also important for people who already have heart disease. To lower your risk, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends:

• Watch your weight.• Quit smoking and stay away from secondhand smoke.• Control your cholesterol and blood pressure.• If you drink alcohol, drink only in moderation.• Get active and eat healthy.

Make 2019 the year that you focus on your heart health. And what better month to start than February. The word February comes from the Latin word “februum”, which means purification. Pair up with your loved ones to take a walk, adjust your diet, get fit. Your heart will thank you and you could be helping a loved one reduce their risk for heart disease too!

Last month, a number of associates and volunteers were witness to a remarkable series of events in our organization’s history as we officially became part of Cleveland Clinic. These events took place on January 9 at Tradition Medical Center. It was truly a day of celebration that included a breakfast for executives of the Martin Health Board of Directors and leaders of Cleveland Clinic, a caregiver forum, a media briefing, and a luncheon for our three boards of directors and Barstow Reed Society donors.

At the media briefing, our new branding and hospital names were unveiled. Our organization is now officially known as Cleveland Clinic Martin Health and the individual hospital names are as follows:

We could not have pulled off this series of events in one day without the help of those volunteers who donated their time. Thank you!

We are now Cleveland Clinic Martin Health
