Now in its 19th year, Bundanoon opens its gardens for ramblers to admire and to be inspired. Ten beautiful

private gardens to be showcased along with a plant and gift market in the hall. Celebrate Bundanoon’s 150th anniversary with a visit to some of the older properties in town.

Gardens and Music...a lovely combination. At 4pm on Saturday afternoon in a separate and equally beautiful garden our visitors are invited to attend a superb concert

featuring the renowned Hillel quartet, formed at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in 2012 and named the Australian Youth Orchestra String Quartet for 2014. This quartet have toured extensively around the country. Bring a rug, a picnic tea, and a bottle of wine, sit back and enjoy the music in the peaceful countryside. There will be a second concert featuring a local ensemble on the Sunday afternoon at the conclusion of the ramble.

This garden is a plant lover’s paradise... full of Laurel’s passion and enthusiasm for both old cottage garden favourites and new discoveries. Each plant has a story of where and how it was acquired. Come along and ask lots of questions and you are guaranteed to leave a better gardener.

Bowral is famous for its country gardens and fields of tulips in spring. Just 115 km south-west of Sydney, Bowral has always been a fashionable destination for Sydneysiders and day trippers.

A highlight for cricket fans is the International Cricket Hall of Fame. Outdoor sports include fly-fishing on the lake or golf at one of the town’s excellent courses. Bowral Lookout is well worth a visit.

2015 Tulip Time Bowral, Southern Highlands ‘Mother Nature’

Corbett Gardens 15 - 27 September As one of Australia’s oldest flower festivals, Tulip Time brings tens of thousands of visitors from across the country to our region.

Bowral’s Corbett Gardens will again be mass-planted with over 75,000 tulips and 16,500 annuals with an additional 35,000 tulips planted in parks in Mittagong and Moss Vale. Follow the interactive signage through the garden beds understanding how the festival theme of 'Mother Nature' has been brought to life through the designs.

This year Garvan Research Foundation, will be Tulip Time’s charity partner. The Foundation is the marketing and fundraising arm of the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, a world-leading institute, pioneering study into some of the most widespread diseases affecting our community today. The 2015 Tulip Time Festival

will feature Garvan’s outstanding supporters, Samuel and Connie Johnson from the Love Your Sister campaign as joint Ambassadors.

Funds raised by Garvan during Tulip Time will be apportioned back to the local Wingecarribee community for the world class Australian BioResources facility in Moss Vale and contribute to the Connie Johnson Breast Cancer Research Fellowship.

Across the festival you can experience the ever changing program of events including live entertainment in Corbett Gardens, Sounds of Spring, Street Market, Sunset Cinema, Butterscotch’s Playground, Dogs Day Out and the classic favourite Street Parade. And some of Australia’s premier private gardens.

The Highlands Theatre Group has a reputation for producing quality, affordable entertainment that dates well back into the last century and it is one that continues today.

Just in this year alone, they will have completed four stage productions, including a major musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein, ‘Oklahoma!’ which involved a cast of forty, a twenty five piece orchestra and a volunteer stage crew of twenty!

Prior to this in February, the Agatha Christie mystery, ‘A Murder Is Announced’, opened at The Mittagong Playhouse, leaving fans of the super sleuth Miss Marple, well and truly satisfied that justice had indeed been done.

Later in August, at the same venue, Sir Ronald Harwood’s very funny, yet rather poignant play ‘Quartet’ touched audiences with the cast’s sensitive portrayal of four once famous opera singers, residing in a retirement home, as they each try to come to terms with their lost youth and past glory.

After a slight change of plan, discussions regarding the Highlands Theatre Group’s final production for the year are well underway and details will soon be made available, so keep checking your local newspapers for all relevant notices.

Next year will be no less busy for the group, which is run entirely by a dedicated band of volunteers and operates as a not for profit organisation. The committee would love to hear from any talented Directors wishing to submit a proposal for their consideration. By contacting H.T.G a copy of the ‘Submission Guidelines’ can be provided.

Newcomers to the group are always welcome, especially those who have a particular interest in one or more of the following areas: Set construction and design, backstage crew, front of house, sound and lighting, costume and makeup, promotion and advertising, box office and ticket sales. www.htg.org.au

Berrima is a historic village offering a day tripper the most wonderful array of food and shopping experiences in a living history environment. It is a favourite destination for Sydneysiders and Illawarra and Canberra residents and has exquisite boutique shopping, antiques and great food.

Established as a township in 1831, Berrima is a preserved Australian, Georgian, colonial town. It is located in a picturesque valley on a bend of the Wingecarribee River. In the 19thC, the township was destined to become the main town of the Southern Highlands, but when the railway line was built through Moss Vale in the 1860s, it faded to a sleepy village.

The first Europeans to investigate the area were sent by the colonial governor, Governor Hunter. With a water supply provided by the nearby Wingecarribee River, a town plan, in the manner of an English village, was laid out by Robert Hoddle. Few substantial houses were built, although by the 1850s sturdy Anglican and Catholic churches replaced the original wattle and daub versions. Licensed since 1834, the Surveyor-General Inn, in the centre of town, is the longest licensed hotel in NSW.

By the 1960s, the preservation of old Georgian buildings became of national importance to our heritage, so the entire village of Berrima was declared a historic village by the National Trust.

The most interesting period in the history of Berrima is perhaps when it became an internment camp for enemy aliens and POWs during WW1. The Courthouse Museum and Berrima Gaol are still two impressive sandstone buildings which every visitor must see. Until a few years ago the gaol was still used as a prison.

Berrima is said to be a word from the language of the Dharawal people meaning ‘Black Swan’. The Dharawal were displaced in the area by farming and grazing interests and were rarely seen by the 1870s.

In addition to the assortment of cool climate wines produced on the 13 hectare vineyard, including sauvignon blanc, riesling, pinot gris, pinot noir and merlot, a selection of homemade jams and relishes is also available for you to taste. $2 Coffee available as well as a range of orchids. Not to be missed on your visit is a viewing of the beautifully restored neo- gothic style chapel.

Robertson is the lushest of the Southern Highlands landscapes and is renowned for its rich volcanic soil in which potatoes are grown for the NSW market. Potatoes were the first crops planted in Robertson when a large parcel of land was cleared in the mid 19C. It could be said that this was due to the prevalence of landholders with an Irish background.

Robertson’s development followed the usual pattern of rural towns with churches, cricket and football teams, schools, school of arts and agricultural societies.

Macquarie Pass, linking the Highlands to the coast was such a brilliant spectacle that Robertson soon became the eastern gateway to the Highlands. Local businessmen, eager to capitalise on the town’s potential, brought the attractions of the area to general attention; the waterfalls, gorges and lush countryside.

Each October, the Robertson Railway Station Gardens are ablaze with the most spectacular

display of flowering waratahs in NSW. Visitors can stroll through the gardens any time and purchase a bunch from the Fettlers Shed.

The building known as ‘The Cheese Factory’ is a ‘must see’ in Robertson as it now houses a collection of shops offering cheese, gifts, craft, collectables and a cafe.

The Illawarra Fly turns exploring the cliff tops into a great adventure with treetop walkways, a soaring tower, a Zipline and sweeping coastal vistas from Port Kembla to Kiama.

The village is delighful but as well is an ideal base from which to explore a spectacular hinterland; it is recognized as the “green heart” of the Southern Highlands. It is a great place to use as a base when exploring the Highlands, close to national parks and half way between the coast and plains. It is within easy reach of delightful towns which are all great places to wander, stop for something to eat and browse through little shops and galleries.
