Corbett Gardens 24 September – 7 October As one of Australia’s oldest and best loved flower festivals, Tulip Time continues to grow as the region’s largest event, expanding into towns and villages across the Shire. Still the centrepiece of Tulip Time, Bowral’s Corbett Gardens will again be mass-planted with over 60,000 tulips and 25,000 annuals with an additional 40,000 tulips planted in Winifred West Park, Mittagong and Leighton Gardens, Moss Vale.

This year CanTeen Australia and Kollege of Knowledge Kommittee for Kids Inc. (4K's), will be Tulip Time’s joint charity partners, whilst celebrating its 53rd year as one of Australia’s leading flora events, and one of the only remaining Charity Based flora festivals in NSW.

The partnership allows these charities to broaden their reach and message, whilst also being a valuable

fundraising event, with funds raised by the charities going directly back to the local Wingecarribee community to fund much needed initiatives.

We’re also proud to announce Kathryn Robinson as our 2013 Tulip Time Ambassador. Kathryn has spent the past 12 years working as a journalist; reporter, producer and presenter with her current role as host of Meet the Press. Kathryn will be working closely with the Tulip Time Committee and charity partners to introduce and ensure that this year’s festival delivers to its theme of ‘Brighter Futures’.

The Festival runs for 14 days throughout the Southern Highlands. An exciting program of events and activities are planned and will be underpinned with the key message of ‘Brighter Futures’ coupled with the central color theme of red which will adorn the streets, businesses and gardens during this year’s festival.

There will be a changing program of

Special events on the calendar this year include Rugby 7’s Tournament, ‘Battle of the Bangers’ sausage cook-off held within the town/village pubs and the ‘King of Koffee’ competition. Also open for the duration of Tulip Time are some of Australia’s premiere private gardens showing the spring blooms at their most spectacular.

Bowral - home to the International Cricket Hall of Fame Bowral is a most delightful country town situated in a valley at the foot of Mt.Gibraltar. Due to the high altitude of the Southern Highlands, the town enjoys gorgeous autumns as exotic European trees and shrubs change their colour in preparation for the winter months.

The shopping precinct in Bowral has an atmosphere like that of few other country towns as it offers an eclectic variety of boutiques, bookstores, antique and craft shops, restaurants and cafes.

Discover the beauty of Mittagong & Bowral!

• Leave Fitzroy Falls, turn left into Nowra Rd, turn left again into Myra Vale Rd and travel across country to Wildes Meadow and then to Burrawang via Wildes Meadow Rd & Church St. Burrawang has a lovely

• From here, head back along Wildes Meadow Rd and Myra Vale Rd. (13.5 kilometre drive) to Belmore Falls. The Falls are in the Morton National Park, and there are walking tracks and picnic facilities.

• After Belmore Falls travel towards Robertson via Pearsons Lane and the Illawarra Hwy. Visit Robertson Nature Reserve which is a 5 hectares of unique rainforest and a 750m walk. In the town of Robertson, you will find specialty shops, cafes, the Old Cheese Factory which houses a gift shop, homewares and a country cafe. Stay a while and enjoy a devonshire tea.

• When you leave Robertson, you can then travel down Jamberoo Pass where you will find the Illawarra Fly or travel further to Minnamurra Rainforest. Here you will find an abundance of wildlife, birdlife and Minamurra Falls. Take a walk to the Falls or head back into the Highlands.

Berrima - a shoppers paradise Berrima is a unique, historic village offering a day tripper the most wonderful array of food and shopping experiences in a living history environment. Established as a township in 1831, Berrima is a preserved Australian, Georgian, colonial town. It is located in a picturesque valley on a bend of the Wingecarribee River.

The town was laid out in the manner of an English village around a village green. The centre of the village today is a living museum, with many of the original buildings, including the gaol, still providing a unique atmosphere within the town.

Today, Berrima is a favourite day trip destination for Sydneysiders and Illawarra and Canberra residents. It offers exquisite boutique shopping, antiques and great food.

Moss Vale, the Shire Capital Moss Vale is the gateway to the Hume Highway and the Illawarra and is central to Southern Highland townships and villages and to Highland attractions. The town retains an atmosphere and charm of yesteryear due to an effort to preserve and restore old public buildings and private homes.

Some buildings date to the 1860s - 1890s, the Old Post Office. The Moss Vale Hotel, Court House and the historic Railway Station are fine examples of the 19C architecture. Leighton Gardens, in the centre of town, is as pretty as a picture in spring and autumn with massed displays of flowers and shrubs.

Berrima & Moss Vale www.highlandsimag.com.au

Historic Berrima

Bundanoon, a "place of deep gullies". Early industries in the district included timber milling, sandstone quarrying and farming. Today Bundanoon retains many of its early 20C buildings and has a 'yesteryear' charm about it.

Bundanoon has its share of interesting craft shops, art galleries, cafes, restaurants, nurseries and picnic areas.

You can hire a bike, walk through nearby Morton National Park, enjoy picnic spots, native flowers and birds and see kangaroos and wallabies at dusk on the edge of town.

Take a walk to "Glow Worm Glen" and discover how the Glow Worms live and glow. Bundanoon is a bushwalkers paradise with fourteen suggested walks; most have vantage points with spectacular views across the valleys. Probably the most visited lookout is the one overlooking the Grand Canyon 3km from the town centre.

What to See & Do

Robertson www.highlandsimag.com.au

The rolling hills of Robertson

Robertson is a pretty rural village with breath-taking scenery, spectacular waterfalls and rainforests in nearby National Parks. Lush surrounding farmland and country lanes complete the picture for this 'not to be missed' visitor friendly village, which lies at the edge of the Southern Highlands.

In Robertson, you’ll find cosy cafes and restaurants, antiques and collectables, galleries with regular exhibitions, and a heritage railway station. Many shops specialize in goods that are both hand - made and Australian.

The building known as ‘The Cheese Factory’ is a ‘must see’ in Robertson as it now houses a collection of shops offering, cheese, gifts, craft, collectables and a cafe.

The village is worth visiting both for itself, and as an ideal base to explore a spectacular hinterland, it is recognized as the “green heart” of the

Southern Highlands on account of its superb rural scenery. Ridge roads with sweeping views contrast with sheltered tree-clad lanes, making this a delightful place for a scenic drive.

There is much to discover. Stud cattle, sheep and alpacas graze green pastures. Rich, deep, red soils grow the legendary “Robbo Spuds” - Australia’s most sought-after potatoes.

Nearby are three of the longest drop waterfalls in Australia. They all plunge from rugged sandstone escarpments into rainforest canyons and valleys. Barren Grounds nature reserve has wonderful wild flowers and easy plateau walks to coastal views.

The Illawarra Fly turns exploring the cliff tops into a great adventure with treetop walkways, a soaring tower, and sweeping coastal vistas from Port Kembla to Kiama.

With winter well and truly here, celebrate everything good about the colder weather at this year's Fireside Festival. Run throughout August by members of The Poacher’s Way - a collection of more than 20 venues in the Canberra region including wineries, restaurants and cafes, galleries and accommodation providers, this month-long festival is all about curling up by the crackling fire, with some hearty winter cuisine while enjoying a glass of fine local red with loved ones and friends.

The Fireside calendar is packed with events throughout the whole month. There is everything from degustation dinners to tapas, wine master classes, vintage tastings, live shows and music, lantern cinema, horse rides, chocolate making demonstrations and art exhibitions.... and of course there will be gluhwein and endless hot chocolate.

For food lovers, Fireside will feature the finest regional produce as restaurants and cafes source the freshest local ingredients (including truffles!) for their winter-inspired menus. Signature events include the Duck & Pinot Dinner at Grazing and Podfood’s Truffle Dinner.

With Canberra cementing itself as home to some of the world’s top cool climate wines, the finest wines will be showcased at vineyards and cellar

doors with Muscat tasting at Clonakilla Winery, tapas and Tempranillo at Mount Majura Vineyard and wine and chocolate tasting at Lerida Estate!

Live music will also be a feature, with local musicians playing at many of our venues to create the perfect backdrop for that long lazy lunch, or to dance the night away.

Fireside also offers a unique opportunity to meet the region’s internationally acclaimed artists at their studios and galleries. Celebrate the re-opening of Old Saint Luke’s studio or head to Beaver Galleries or Bungendore Wood Works.

With so much on offer, be sure to stay the night at Country Guesthouse Schonegg, the newly-opened East Hotel or the Gundaroo Colonial Inn.

What to See & Do

Wollongong www.highlandsimag.com.au

Clear skies over Wollongong

Wollongong is located 80 kilometres south of Sydney and is bordered by the Royal National Park to the north, Lake Illawarra to the south and the Illawarra Escarpment to the west.

The Wollongong coastline offers 17 sparkling surf beaches that are patrolled by lifesavers from September to April. Beaches are generally in easy walking distance from shops, hotels and clubs.

Stanwell Park to the north of Wollongong City, could be regarded as the gateway to the Illawarra region and is an ideal spot for day trippers.

Bald Hill Lookout, a magnificent platform looking south over Wollongong City, has outstanding views of the Illawarra and its escarpment. Watch hang gliders and para gliders or marvel at the spot

where Lawrence Hargrave first took flight.

Experience the Grand Pacific Sea Bridge, 665 metres over-the-ocean, near Stanwell Park; spend some time exploring northern coastal villages while heading down the cliff hugging roads hanging above the ocean.

North of Wollongong the coastal villages are famous for their unspoilt beaches and rock pools, unique art and crafts, great fishing and surfing spots as well as many cafes and restaurants.

From those northern villages, the Grand Pacific Drive makes its way into the city of Wollongong. There you will find an array of shopping outlets, restaurants and cafes, golf courses, art galleries and more.
